"BlueScreen" message upon restart

When upgrading to Nero 2015 I ended up with a "blue Screen" message when attempting to restart the machine. Cannot get rid of the message even though I attempted a "restore" to a prior point. Going back a few installs (11) does not solve the problem either. Anyone got any ideas on how I can get by this one?

  • Hi Dominic-

    What is the message?

What are you doing when you restart your system?

    Wither1,
Thank you for your question. I apologize for not getting back to you sooner but I was frantically trying to solve my problem by gathering information on BSOD. The error was in 1033 and had a BCCode of 50.
I managed to gather some information on BSOD and download a programme (BlueScreenView) that allowed me to read the minidump. Actually it pointed to a module in Win/sys32/ntoskrnl.exe. The information that I garnered stated that it could either be a hardware or software problem. To the best of my knowledge, this module was not associated with any hardware other than memory. Memory proved to be okay.
I uninstalled the Nero11 that I was attempting to install and tried again after restoring my Windows to an earlier time. Still got the BSOD. Again it was the same module. How do I get a new version of the module was now the question. No luck with this one but I did notice from the dump that Windows had done an update prior to my attempts to reinstall Nero.
I have been a faithful subscriber to Nero and have recovery disks up to platinum 2014. Since the last windows update was done in Dec 2014 I thought that perhaps the older version of Nero might be the problem. Sure enough 2014 installed without a problem and I have since updated to 2015. I had always assumed that each update would replace the previous version but this does not appear to be the case. It was this thinking that led me to the method of a time/version sequential update.
    I now have 2 versions of Nero (2014 & 2015). I will uninstall 2014.
I do believe that I have solved my problem but would be most interested in your opinion on the matter.
Once again, thanks for your response.

  • Thanks for the information. Most people don't read the bottom of the BSOD to find out what the actual culprit is and they don't know about the blue screen viewer. I would have asked you to get that if you couldn't get the real problem from the BSOD.

I only did a cursory review of the ntoskrn.exe problem but numerous people found that replacing memory sticks fixed their problem even though memtest did not always indicate a problem. I don't know what you're system is and if you get any indications during the POST. On this system, I get a beep before the POST details are shown. That's normal if memory is okay because it's checked before the POST details come up. More than one beep would indicate a problem. On my other system, the POST details aren't shown and there are no beeps so one has to rely on doing things like memtest (it just takes so long to do that and I don't have the patience for it).

A Microsoft rep suggested updating the graphics drivers. Others recommended updating the mobo drivers.

The fact that you did the system restore so far back and it didn't help seems to indicate a hardware problem.

On the other hand, since v11 uses different versions of .net framework and the C++ redistributables than v14 or v2015, that could also be an issue. However, those issues wouldn't arise until Windows had booted.

Like most of these problems, they're system specific and there's no one fix fits all.

Well, that's my view. Doesn't help much.

True, installation of one version doesn't uninstall a previous version.

A bit of caution for you. If you go into C:\Program Files (x86)\Nero, you will find a Nero 11 folder. Don't delete it because files in the folder are used by v14 and v2015. Most of the shared files are in \Nero Content and it's probably (key word) okay to delete the folders for the individual applications but, I would move them first and try V2015 for a while to see if any problems occur.

I'm glad you got 2015 installed.

    Enjoy!

  • Thanks for the added information; especially regarding memory.
I was not very thorough when I omitted to tell you that I am om Win7 Pro (64bit) with 8MB of RAM. My virus protection is with AVG,
Thanks for the tip on the Nero11 folder.
Will keep you apprised of my progress.
    Thanks again.

  • AVG shouldn't be an issue in this particular case, the way I see it.

Yes, please let me know how things turn out.

  • Wither 1,

My most sincere apologies for not getting back to you sooner. My original problem with the BlueScreen has been resolved thanks to your good advice.

I have been preoccupied with trying to reverse the effects of WIN 10. My attempts to return to Win7 have been exhausting and somewhat un-fruitable.

In the interim I have upgraded to Nero 2016 Platinum and used it to backup my system. I made 2 backups - one in 08/15 and a second 09/15. This has caused me some problems and I will have to open a new topic "Backup 2015".

    Thanks again for your help.

  • I guess a reply a year later is better than no reply. LOL I'm certainly glad that one issue is resolved.

How did you back up your system with Backitup 2015? It doesn't back up the operating system. I guess I'll have to look for the new thread (at this moment I'm just looking at my e-mail notifications).
