.nbi file in Nero BackItUp v.2

Hello to everyone,

I'm trying to restore files saved with Nero Back It Up version 2.10.6.4 and I can't find the .nbi file.
When I do a backup test I notice that there isn't .nbi file. Is possible that Nero Back It Up v.2 doesn't generate this file?
Because when I'm doing the same with Nero Back It Up v.12 there is an .nbi file inside the .nba file generated but not when I do that with the version 2.

I have installed the older version in an old server.

Thanks .

I don't have Backitup 2. For the older versions, they typically use a .nco file, instead of .nbi, which makes it impossible to restore with a version like Backitup 4 or later. What happens when you try to restore the backup?

    Thanks for the answer!

When I try to restore the .nba file generated with NBIUv.2 using NBIUv.12 it says that it needs the information file to do so (.nbi file). However, I can restore the .nba file using tthe same version NBIUv.2.

If I use WinRar to open the .nba file generated with NBIUv.2 I can see a folder which contains the backup and a file called like "E32EF93B-9C94-4949-8D96-94DCB24C5152". Further more, I can't extract this last one.

If I use WinRar to open the .nba file generated with NBIUv.12 instead, I can see the same folder which contains the backup and the .nbi file.

It's not a big deal, I guess. I only have to install a newer version of NBIU, version 4 or later as you said, in my old server to guarantee compatibility with latest versions of NBIU.

It's only a question of curiosity.

Thanks again! (I'm sorry for my english).

Interesting they used .nbi in v2 but, goes to show you what I know. V2 is about 2 years before I first came into the forum. Some versions also generate .txt files and some don't.

One of the problems is that Backitup stores .nbi and other job files on a persons computer in the Roaming\Nero x\Backitup folder. If the files in that folder are not available when trying to do a restore, Backitup may not work.

The only version of Backitup available is Backitup 2014 and it's free. Since you created a file backup, it might work (it doesn't support drive backups).

If that doesn't work, we might have to use the v12 bootable disc with the Image Tool.

What you did with WinRAR is usually what I recommend when all else fails. I guess you can't extract the folder containing the backed up files.

    Hi again!

I knew about the existence of this path "Roaming\Nero x\Backitup folder".
In v.2 this path doesn't exist (in my version at least). However, this path exists in v.12.

Well, it seems that my only chance is to install NBIU v.14 in my old server and try.
Because I don't have to restore my data now, it's only a security topic.

Thanks a lot for answer me with celerity.
I hope we've learned something useful.

  • I’m doubtfully
    Hi! I'm back! :UP

I'm working again in the same issue, I did steps forward.

I find the .nbi files in my server (Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2), they are in the following path:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrador\Datos de programa\Ahead\Nero BackItUp\Files" (hurrah!)

Now I have 3 questions and I'll be grateful if you can give me some help on them

1.- How can save the .nbi file with the .nba files together. There is an option to do it? I haven't found it yet. :S. Because the folder "...Ahead\Nero
BackItUp\Files" is growing up attaching the new .nbi file every time the system do a backup (and it happens every day...). There are nbi files from 2009 and wheights 829MB.
I can save this folder into the backup I guess, but it it's a rough way of do so.

2.- There's a way to get back the same structure of folders but not in the original paths but in a new folder? Because when I do that Nero only preserves the last folder of the pathstring. You know? i.e. this file: "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrador\Datos de programa\Ahead\Nero BackItUp\Files\example.pdf" it becomes in "F:\MyBackUpFolder\Files\example.pdf".

3.- I can not install Nero BackItUp v.2 in my laptop. I think is due to the multiple installations did it in the past. (I can install it in an other PC). Nero Give me this error:"The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2755" May be an error in the registre? Because I used the clean tool several times.

I'm very interested in the first question! (o.0)

Thank you a lot!! And Sorry again for my English. I'm working on it. :)

They started combining the .nco and .nbi files into the .nba starting with Backitup 3, I think. I have no idea how to do that.

What worries me is that you said the folder is growing every day. What's doing that?

Where is your v2 backup stored- hard drive, disc, etc.? If you can install v2 on your PC and we can copy both the Roaming folder and the backed up files there, you might be able to recover them.

  • Good to read you!

    - It seems that it is the way of working of NBIUv2. It saves the .nbi file of each backup into the "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrador\Datos de programa\Ahead\Nero BackItUp\Files\" folder and the .nba file, with all the archives compressed, in the place that you want, in my case in a DVD. For this reason the "...Ahead\Nero BackItUp\Files\" folder is growing every day, 3MB per day. I can erase manually this files it's not a big deal.

    - Yes! I can recover the data in an other PC.,but I have to copy manually the .nbi file to do it. When I really need do the backup I won't have this file in my DVD, it will be in my damaged server, that's the point.
Because of that I need a way to answer the qüestions 1, mainly, and 2.

Thanks for your attention and patience!

  • If you don't have v2 installed, how is it making a backup every day?

The purpose of your thread is how to recover some backed up files. If they're on a DVD, it seems you can restore them. I don't know what all this other stuff is about. You've got me confused.

  • I'm sorry if I'm explaining me wrong. It's not my intention.I don't want to waste your time.
    The situation is as follows:
    - I have a server (Windows Server 2003 service pack 2) that has installed NBIUv2 since 2009 correctly. It produces every day a backup into a rewritable DVD. But it only saves the .nba files into this DVD. The nbi files are stored into the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrador\Datos de programa\Ahead\Nero BackItUp\Files\" in the server's HDD. With only the .nba files I can not restore the data. I would want to save the .nbi file and the .nba file(s) together in the same DVD in an automàtic way. (this my first and main problem)

    - To check the backup and to ensure that it works I want to restore the data in an other computer. In my laptop I can not install NBIUv2 because of the error 2755 (this is my third problem) .
I can install NBIUv2 in my desktop PC but I'd like to restore the data in the same tree of folders that the original data was stored but into and another folder or HDD (this is my second problem).

    You've reason it's a little tricky and I didn't explain well.
I'm so sorry for these misunderstandings. I apreciate a lot your help and interest.

  • They did a lot of changing things with the .nbi, .nco, .nba etc. back then. As far as I know, all the information needed to restore from a disc is put on the disc. The problem is that when you using an installed Backitup, it needs the .nbi (and .nji) file in that folder to determine the backup characteristics. There should also be two folders- A cache folder and a files folder. In the absence of those files, the way to recover files from a disc is to create a bootable disc with the Image Tool and boot from it. You can do that in v12.

However, maybe we should address the v7 installation problem. What is the operating system on the laptop? Also, what is the version of Burning Rom on your 2003 system?
