I’m frustrated

"nero.express.msi" is missing

I'm trying to use Nero 2015 - Nero Express to burn a DVD but I get "nero.express.msi" is missing and am told to enter a path to it ... but I can't find it on my system. I upgraded from the internet and do not have a disc. How can I get a copy of "nero.express.msi?"

  • Hello John-

What do you mean by "I upgraded from the internet"? Did you download the trial version or did you run the installation from the internet.

If you go to c:\Program Files (x86)\Nero\Nero 2015\Burning Rom

    is there a StartNE.exe file?

  • Yes, there is a StartNE.exe file in

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Nero\Nero 2015\Nero Burning ROM

Also, on my C:\ drive, I have a UTILITY subdirectory where I "store" all my internet installation .exe and Zip files. There is a "Nero 21-5" subdirectory and in it is a

    Nero_Platinum-12.5.01300.exe

file and when I double click it, it starts the installation of Nero (all over again -so I cancelled it before it got going). If I were to let it re-install Nero, would/should I get the nero.express.msi file that Burning ROM needs?

  • You would get v12, not v2015 if you ran that file.

Right click on the StartNE.exe file. Select "run as administrator". Does it open?

  • Yes, it opens in the Nero window to select various types of "burn"(?) formats (like "Data, Music, Videos and 'Image, Project, Copy' ").

  • Does it show as active (not greyed out) in the Welcome screen (run Nero Launcher)? Does it now run properly from there?

    Are you able to burn?

  • No, I still get the same error message telling me that I need to enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package "nero.express.msi" when I activate Nero Burning ROM.

I ran Nero Video Browser and it seems to work properly.

  • I was talking about burning from Nero Express which is what you indicated you wanted to do. Does it open correctly from the Welcome screen?

What you're mentioning now is completely different. As I understand it, when you click on Burning Rom in the Welcome screen you're getting that error message. I think that's happening because Burning Rom has an option to use Nero Express. Sounds like your installation is corrupted. Could be a corrupt installation file.

I recommend uninstalling v2015. Then, go to nero.com, downloads, previous product downloads and download v2015 Classic (I think that's what you have). Right click on it and select run as administrator. Run the check for updates. Then install the Content pack (Nero Launcher, Nero Content, download).

  • From the beginning:
    1. When I double click on the desktop icon for "Nero 2015," I get a the Nero Launcher ...
2, Then I click on either "Nero Burning Rom" or "Nero Express" and I get the window with options on the left for "Data, Music, Video, "Image,Project, Copy" and I click on "Video" and am given four options on the right side of the window ... and I highlight "DVD-Video Disc."
    3. Immediately, the Nero Express windows comes up and when I click on Next, a window pops up that indicates it is configuring "Nero Express," and it gets almost through but atg the very last, it gives me the error message that it can't find "nero.expres.msi" and asks me for an alternate path ...

    4. I'll do as you suggest and uninstall Nero v2015 and try to download it again ...

I'll get back to you ...

  • THE PROBLEM IS GETTING WORSE:

as you suggested, I uninstalled Nero 2015, went to Nero.com and re-downloaded Nero 2015 from the "previous product download" and the Content package.

Then I tried to install Nero 2015 once as Run as Administrator (I did not select the option to have Nero 2015 be activated whenever a video is loaded and I did not want to load your virus software) and got an error window that informed me the installation had failed (I had moved the Nero installation window to the upper left so I could see the progress of loading the various Nero Launcher components and determine the status of the installation - otherwise the Nero installation window just seems to sit with about a 15% progress FOREVER).

So I closed all the open windows (like my Google browser which had my serial number) and triedto install it a SECOND TIME. I selected the same options and got the same progress of installation components and when they were all competed, I got the same Nero installation had failed window.

I will note, each time I have tried to install Nero 2015, I always get a browser message to UPGRADE TO NERO 2016.

THUS, I gave up on Nero 2015 and purchased Nero 2016, downloaded it and the Content files and, before trying to install it, ran my register cleanup software with a lot of whistles and bells to speed up the Windows 10; restarted windows 10 and

ran the installation of Nero 2016 ... guess what? I got the SAME error "Nero Installation Failed" window.

Is there some option in Windows 10 that Nero doesn't like? Everything seems to be loading all the components but at the very last, the installation fails. If you woud liketo talk, I ham at my home office 713-995-5004. I never had problems with Nero 2012 and I need to be able to burn DVD to my DVD drive and Nero 2012/2015/2016 is the default for burning DVD's.

Any suggestions? (Certainly, I should not have to select the options at the start of installing Nero 201?)

NOW I will restart the desktop to get my main screen back

  • Time: 11/16/2015 3:48 CST- I guess I had better put a date stamp on my emails since this problem is going over a day (or two?):

Okay, I had to do a cold restart of my desktop after trying to install Nero 2016 blacked the screen on the main monitor.

Just to test the options at installation, I tried to reinstall Nero 2016 and tell it to leave the box on Having Nero 2016 be my multi-media default (which I really don't want because I use Power DVD 15 to play movies). It got into the installation process AND BLACKED THE MAIN MONITOR again. This time, it also blacked the second monitor as well.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro on a Dell 2305 Inspiron. Also there is another problem that may be related ... on this system, when I was running Windows 8, I was able to run DVD Shrink to copy my large ISO files that I produce (for my company). When the first disc was copied (shrunk) into a temp file, I was told to install a blank disc in the D: drive and DVD Decrypter would then copy the Temp file bak onto the blank disc. Now with Windows 10, DVD Shrink runs but it gives me an error message that it can't find Nero to burn the disc. (unfortunately, the error message says to contact DVD Shrink support, but they are out of business.) Has Windows 10 changed the way it calls to Nero to burn a DVD are made?

  • Well, DVD Shrink worked at one time with Nero. However, that was discontinued way back in Nero v8 (I believe). I don't trouble shoot DVD Shrink so you're on your own with that one.

By the way, I'm not a Nero employee. Just a volunteer who's been trying to help people with Nero for over 7 years.

In regards to Nero v2015, I have no answer as to why Google would tell you to upgrade except that v2016 is the only Nero version officially compatible with Win 10.

I'm not sure what's going on in regards to the installation stopping and then failing. It sounds like a firewall or anti-virus security issue. In some cases, tech support has provided people a tool to fix registry problems that cause the Installation Failed error.

We could try a clean boot to install v2016 (and v2015, after changing it's compatibility mode).

If you prefer, send an e-mail to techsupport@nero.com. Please let me know the resolution.

  • Since you are consulting for Nero without pay, I thank you for your time and efforts. I'm a meteorological consultant who also finds myself aiding the weather UNwary "for free."

I was able to get DVD shrink to work with Windows 8, but now, not with Windows 10. Based on all the trouble I've had with Windows 10, it was my big mistake to "upgrade" to it. I historically do not try to jump to Microsoft's "experiments in Operating Systems." I never upgraded to Windows 95 for instance.

Your suggestion about trying to load Neor 2016 when my antivirus and firewalls are down is worth trying. I can also try it in the SAFE Mode if that doesn't work.

Interestingly, I still have Nero 2012 loaded and may try it to Burn a DVD.

Can you tell me where Microsoft Windows 10 has hidden the OS file that lists all the default versions of programs that will be invoked when I run a particular application (like setting Google Chrome as my browser instead on MS Explorer, etc)? When I go to Windows File Manager and try to burn a DVD, it automatically opens Nero Express. I need to bypass that if I can so I can use another Burn software and will have to change the default for burning.

If I can get an answer from Nero Tech Support, I'll tell you.

  • I hope you weren't predicting the weather for Ohio today. Neither the Weather Channel nor the local meteorologists got any part of it correct. :D

If you want to burn a DVD in Win 10, you need to go to the Microsoft store and buy Windows Media Center. It's the same one as in Windows 8.

As far as I know, file associations are still in Control Panel, Default Programs.

I mentioned a clean boot which is different than just disabling the firewalls and anti-virus.

  • I did a clean boot by shutting down my computer (cold boot) then canceling the antivirus and firewall. Nero 2015 and 2016 still didn't install completely. Interestingly, all the files for the subparts in the Launcher copied in, then the failure happened just as it looked like it was about to finish OK.

I have a Question in with Tech Support at Nero. I'll pass on their solution when it comes.

  • A clean boot is done by running msconfig.exe. In Services, checkmark the box to "hide all Microsoft..........". Then, select Disable All. In the Startup tab, select Task Manager. In the Startup tab, select all applications there and then click on Disable.
In the System Configuration, select the Startup tab again. Select OK. Reboot. Try the installation. (microsoft has made this procedure far to difficult in Win 10. It was far more straightforward in previous versions.)

Regardless of whether it works or not, go back and undo everything you did and reboot.

  • I find I did retain the copy of Win Media Player from some previous version of Windows and used it to burn the video I wanted to give a deacon in our church.
When I used to use My Computer to select a file and burn it, the My Computer screen came up with "Burn using Nero" as the option. Then one day (recently) it kept giving em the "missing nero.express.msi" message - which initiated my plea on the internet.

When you suggested I reload my Nero 2015.exe, I uninstalled the Nero 2015 then tried to re-install it and that is when I keep getting the message window that says it was not loaded successfully - try again later.

I'll try your "clean boot" routine - do people at Microsoft ever think these functions through completely? I have "beta tested" many pieces of software (like WordPerfect when it was created by Satellite Software Inc. in Utah) and know the beta test versions are "not quite ready for prime time." You sound like you'd be a good beta tester.

  • I hope you saw my correction about Windows Media Center.

In regards to the computer wanting to burn with Nero, it sounds like the settings in Control Panel, AutoPlay are set to burn with Nero whenever you insert a blank disc. I wouldn't think this would affect installation of Nero but you can check it out and change it to something else.

People complain about Nero changing things but, believe me, Microsoft would get an ear full from me if I was beta testing and ran across the unnecessary hierarchy in running a stinking clean boot. It's just a little simpler in previous versions. This is just one example of things that Microsoft does that irritates me.

  • I followed your procedures for a Clean Boot and it did NOT allow Nero 2016 to load - I got the same message at the end of the Installation that Nero 2016 had failed to install and I should "try again," but with no suggestions as to why it failed nor what I might try before I "try again later."

Unfortunately, after following your procedures for a Clean Boot, I forgot to copy down all the programs in Task Manager - Startup that I was going to "disable." So, when I tried to restore them back to "Enable," I can't seem to get my second monitor to turn on. I've gone to the Control Panel - Display - second monitor and it only shows me the primary monitor (even when I try to Detect the second one).

[I've had this problem before (starting my second monitor) - Is there some additional task in Task Manager-Startup that I need to enable that I'm not aware of? It seems I Enabled all the tasks I Disabled when following your Clean Boot instructions, but I'm not sure.]
    -------
Now that I had Uninstalled Nero 2015 (in order to Install Nero 2016, the "Burn using Nero" has disappeared from Microsoft's File Manager ("Computer"). I assume that if I ever get Nero 2016 Installed, it will show up again.
    -------
Microsoft is growing so rapidly and their turn over has brought new employees in that aren't committed to "maintaining an upward migratory path when you upgrade," I think their new programmers are like lawyers who MUST MAKE SOME MODIFICATION to your standard contract so you will think they have done something to earn their money. Well, new programmers change things so the lead System's Analyst feels the new programmer is earning his salary. Thus, Media Player didn't get included - and now becomes a revenue stream from those who are accustomed to using it ... and will pay for that privilege.

  • I hear what you're saying about Microsoft. I have Time Warner Cable and they are constantly changing their interface. Ditto for Facebook and others. I think they have a bunch of graphics designers that they're paying and the designers need to justify their existence.

When you went into msconfig.exe to restore everything back to normal, you shouldn't have to pick individual items to re-enable. You should be able to select Enable All in both Services and Startup and uncheck the box to hide the Microsoft services.

If you run dxdiag.exe, Run 64-bit DxDiag, and select Display, are both your monitors shown and are any any errors shown?

If you go to Control Panel, Device Manager, Monitors- Are both enabled?

Are you using a NVIDIA graphics card?

  • Hi John,
One of the more "extreme" methods to get Nero to install is to create a new Windows user account on your computer with Admin privileges ... and use that new user account in order to perform the installation.

It's worked for a few customers that have tried it.
    • view 2 more comments
    • Hi John,
If you use a new user account to do the installation, I think it will be fine for your normal user id afterwards. There could be an option to "install for all users" ... but it might not be necessary. Perhaps worth giving it a whirl ...
    • I'll give it a whirl later. Friday and Saturday are the days I prepare and load my Sunday School lessons into Power Point. One of the reasons I need to be able to burn DVD's is I frequently provide these lessons to other teachers and church members so they can run them later, if the miss church one Sunday.

  • Are you addressing this issue to Customer Service or have you sent an e-mail to techsupport@nero.com? Customer Service wouldn't be able to resolve this issue.

Nero hasn't resolved all their issues with Win 10. I guess that's obvious.

I recommend that you send an e-mail to the address I provided. They have a tool which fixes entries in the registry which probably will resolve your issue. I mentioned earlier that I'm not a Nero employee but you seemed comfortable working with me on this issue so I didn't push it.

The .msi for Nero installations is normally in this path-

    C:\Users\"your user name"\AppData\Local\Temp

The folder is a Neroxxxxxxxxxxxx folder (my xx's).

Are you manually able to get to that path?

  • I can't get to it any longer since I "Uninstalled Nero 2015."

I had looked for it all over, and since the error message I kept getting indicated Nero Express was looking in the subdirectory you indicated, I looked there first - and it wasn't there.

At your suggestion (and with my previous experience on corrupted software), I tried to re-Install Nero 2015 and it has kept failing. My previous load of Nero 2015 was when my OS was Windows 8 Pro ... or maybe even when I was running XP. I never tired to modify the Nero programs then, but now neither 2015 or 2016 will Install without the "Failed" error message.

  • People used to gripe because temporary files were not deleted after an installation. In v2015, Nero decided to automatically delete those files after the installation was complete. It's possible that there's a installation log file there that one can look at. I don't think it's deleted automatically.

Apparently, the registry entry that contains the path to the missing .msi is still there. However, doing anything with it wouldn't matter at this point since you can't install either version.

I really think you should e-mail tech support. They have a tool which fixes registry entries so that v2015 or v2016 can install. Of course, every situation is different so they may have a different fix.

I think I've mentioned it before but, it generally takes 3-5 "business" days to get a response from technical support. With the v2016/Win 10 issues, they've been a bit slower.
