Audio CD's no longer burn: Burn Process Failed

Windows 10, Verbatim external DPAA FW version: QQ3N - HA 1 TA 0 - 20.0.2.14(using Nero Burn & Archive), Nero 2019. Tried feedback@nero.com:

"Very sorry for causing inconvenience!
Many factors can cause Burning to fail. Please try the following methods:
1. If you are using and external Optical Disc Drive Recorder, you can change to another USB port and try again. Some USB ports may not supply enough AC power
2. Please update the firmware or driver of the disc recoder and try again
3. Check all running applications, if any application is locking access to the disc recorder or media files. In case, close the given application.
If there is no application that blocks the recorder, please restart your system and try again in Nero Burning Rom or Nero Express.
4. Try to burn the data with lower speed
5. Try again with a different brand or model of disc"

I did all that. I bought another external burner. I've tried 4 different burners and 4 brands of CD-R's and tried about 2 dozen disks in all. Feedback@nero.com keeps coming back with the suggestion to use another fresh CD (takes 3 weeks to get a feedback@nero.com reply!) I'd be happy to get some real good support and pay dearly for it.

  • Robert,

I just wanted to thank you for cooperating with my efforts to understand the writing of CD Audio discs, the Nero log error messages, etc. I took a break from that and probably won't be going back to it any time soon. I hope you were able to overcome your difficulties and, if so, I'd be curious what the solution was.

Aside from the frustration of dealing with decades old sample programs with errors of their own, the documentation is difficult to use (for me?), etc., the real issue is that there seems to be no end game. For example, on March 11th, Since5.5 (Employee) wrote, "Hi Omega Tester, Thank you very much for this awesome summary! Very much appreciated. I will ask R&D to check it in detail and come back to you." Not a peep in over a month. From past experience, I am quite confident there will be absolutely no cooperation from "R&D".

P.S. As an aside, I installed an update to my Nero 2019 Platinum in recent days and then a notification appeared yesterday informing me that another update was available. When I opened Nero, the start screen had been replaced and I was forced to create an account for some reason. Then, at some point I was informed that some Nero applications would no longer function if I weren't logged into the account. As in the past, there was no indication of the reason for the updates; moreover, there was no indication what functionality is now disabled if not logged in. I have done video editing in the free and open source OpenShot editor and may just switch to that. I actually haven't made a CD or DVD for my own use in several years and don't anticipate doing so ever again.

  • Have you ever used a USB 2 to USB3 adapter? I was sort of alluding to that when I questioned the USB2 vs USB3 connection.

  • We've tried so many things in this thread that I've lost track and don't have time this morning to do a whole re-read, so give this a try (if we haven't already done it)-

    Go to-

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Nero\Nero 2019\Nero Burning ROM

Right click on StartNE.exe and select Properties. In the Compatibility tab, set the mode to Win 7 and click on Apply. Before you get to the Compatibility, you should also be able to opt to "run this program as administrator." I suggest checking that. Run that file and try a burn.

  • I don't remember having any issues with updates. Anyway, I don't think these items would help me. "AI Photo Tagger and logging in to the Nero Account to manage all Nero products" I don't need AI Photo Tagger and I can manage my Nero products without streamlining management of all Nero products.

  • Open task manager. In Processes, is there any process listed that is even remotely related to handling video or audio? I'm still trying to figure out what is causing the device isn't available error.

  • I've done that several times. Nothing jumps out even today. I have tried burning several times in Safe Mode where almost everything is off. No luck.

    • I didn't/don't interpret the response from Since5.5 to indicate that it's the cause of the "device not available" error. Just my opinion.
    • Wither 1,

Your opinion? Sometime in the past, I mentioned a podcast called "Entitled Opinions". "Entitled Opinions" is a literary talk show hosted by Robert P. Harrison, a professor of French and Italian at Stanford University. For the most part, it consists of interviews with opinionated people about an assortment of subjects. To be interviewed, the professor must be convinced that the person has the background and expertise that entitles them to an opinion. Just saying!

I do wish that Nero would answer my question about the reason they are sending a DVD command following a CD write command failure?

      Since5.5 (Employee) 1 month ago
Hi, answer from R&D: Only if Nero Burning ROM can not recognize this CD disc is a compatible CD disc, it will go to the code to get DVD disc layer number(here will also call 0xAD command). So we wonder why the CD disc type used can not be recognize correctly.

      Since5.5,

Thank you for responding to this issue. As you may have noticed, this has been going for 2 months now with no end in sight. The failures occur only when writing Audio CDs (in either DAO or TAO mode) using Nero and several different devices and CD brands. The OP is able to write Data CDs, DVD videos, etc. without problems. For the most part, the same failures occur using Windows Media Player to write Audio CDs, but not Data CDs. The OP even bought a copy of Roxio which has similar failures (but no log). And, as I did a few years ago, I've tried to understand the writing of Audio CDs. I gave up before, but this time I'm persevering. In any case, write errors are also occurring using a Microsoft sample program that I'm using as a learning tool (it's purpose). That one indicates a timing error is happening - a very nice clue except that it is returned by opaque imapi2 code. It is possible to access the drive more directly but it's going to take time.

Anyway, since the OP was getting an assortment of apparently random error indications from the Nero apps, I suspected some sort of timing problem is confusing the communications. Then, during a review of the logs, I noticed that the failures mostly begin with a "Could not perform Write" indication (after all-zero sense data) followed by the 0xAD DVD command. At that point I damaged a CD-R and tried it myself. As shown above, I got the expected write error (but with non-zero sense data) followed by the 0xAD command.

Now, the explanation "Only if Nero Burning ROM can not recognize this CD disc is a compatible CD disc, it will go to the code to get DVD disc layer number(here will also call 0xAD command)." doesn't seem to apply since the program is already in the process of writing to a CD and knows it (see the below synopsis).

None of this is meant to imply that Nero software is responsible for the errors that occur. It would simply be helpful to understand the errors a little better. For instance, why does Nero report a write error when the device returns zero sense data? If the IMAPI program is correct in reporting a timeout, the sense data should be non-zero:

"If the command is terminated with CHECK CONDITION status due to a timeout, sense bytes SK/ASC/ASCQ shall be set to NOT READY/ INSUFFICIENT TIME FOR OPERATION."

Perhaps there's a way to have Burning ROM create an even more detailed log?

Hi Omega Tester, Thank you very much for this awesome summary! Very much appreciated. I will ask R&D to check it in detail and come back to you.
