I have reported this before but when I render a DVD using a file with an audio bit rate of 256 it downgrades it to 192. The Video will Smart render but the audio has to be reencoded. This problem I reported about a year ago or more for a previous release too. If I use a very old Nero installation on an old computer which uses Nero Vision 5 this version keeps the audio at 256. It seems for the last few releases of Nero this is not possible. I'm using 2014 version which downgrades to 192kb the old Nero Vision 5 doesn't. Will this ever be corrected for newer releases?

Hi Rob- I apologize for not responding to this earlier.
I think it depends on the audio codec. It sounds (excuse the pun) like you are using mp3.Is that the case? -
-
No. This is an mpeg video file with a 256 sound track. It'll do Smartencode for the video at 100% but says 0% for audio because it always converts the sound to 192.
As I said this has been happening for the last few releases of Nero Vision. I did raise a fault request a year or so ago. It work on a really old version of Nero Vision I tested a few days ago. (Nero5)
Nothing to do with mp3. We are taking video encoding here especially via Smart encode.
I attach three images to show input file with audio at 256. Nero showing it won't Smartencode the audio and the third image showing the result with the soundtrack at 192.

By the way this also happens if I disable Smartencoding. The audio track get changed down to 192.

I think you'll need to go back to tech support on this one unless Mister_M happens to see it. I'm not sure you would notice a difference between 192 and 256. On the other hand, my hearing is not that good. :(

Rob,
As I read it, the 256 Kbps is recommended for music tracks. I would think that for some people, a 25% reduction in compression and the attendant improvement in audio would make a big difference. As Wither 1 suggested, writing to Tech Support would be in order. Since Nero 5 SmartEncodes the files, they must meet the DVD specifications in other respects. If not, perhaps they will reveal the reason for changes.
Do you have a short non-copyrighted example you could send to them or upload to one of the cloud serivies? -

I did send them samples a long time ago. They acknowledged the "feature" but didn't promise an immediate fix. I agree the quality may not suffer but my experience is that anything which separates the processing of sound an image risks sync problems. Slightly different problem but with video from my camera it wit sometimes put a snippet of sound from the next clip onto the end of the previous clip unless I disable Smartencoding. Also basically why should it stop audio being encoded at its normal rate. Especially as a version many years old does the job properly. Logic suggests it would be simpler to pass through the sound unchanged along with the unchanged video.
I may send them another sample but I fear I'll be fobbed off again.
Another option is to re-install the ancient version of Nero back onto my main machine but it would be better to have it corrected in newer versions.

192 kbps is the standard for Dolby Digital 2.0 audio tracks on DVDs although 256 are allowed. This bitrate is chosen to assure highest compatibility even to older stand alone DVD players.

Thanks for the reply but it would be nice to be given the option to keep the bit rate the same especially as the older versions of Nero allowed this years and years ago.

I also have the same issue/complaint with Nero Vision 2016 - it used to be on older versions of Nero (well, Nero 7) that if you set the audio for "automatic" it would not reduce a 256 AC3 Dolby soundtrack to 192. Also, on my old Nero 7 if it converted the audio to AC3 192 it would ALSO render it in mono, and reduce the volume - for reasons I never understood. There really should be a "just leave the audio as is" function!!!
