Backup incomplete

Backitup (Nero 12 Platinum) has stopped working. Will not back up a 750GB drive (about 150GB free space). Backup only shows 22GB. Windows 10 Home 64-bit.

  • Hello Kevin-

Backitup 12 is not Win 10 compatible but it seems it's partially backing up files. I'm wondering if you need to run the .exe file as the administrator.

Are you getting any error messages?

What device are you backing up to? Is it at least 750 GB?

  • Thanks for the info on Win 10 incompatibility. Guess I have to upgrade.

  • Backitup 2014 and 2015 don't do backups of the OS, if that's included in your backup. If it is, I don't recommend using LiveBackup because it's an incremental backup. Since the OS is constantly changing, you will probably fill up your drive rather quickly unless you use the longest possible times between backups.

Given that, it's a tough decision as to what is the best direction to go.

For my programs, I specify a partition on my hard drive as the location of personal files. I backup the files on that partition using a daily "Update" type backup using Backitup 12. The "Update" type only has two backups. The first one is a full one and the second one is what has changed in the full backup. The second one is replaced everytime the backup is run. It generates a lot of text files but they are rather small. Since the Backitup job files are located on the C: drive, I have a scheduled Update type backup of the location of the job files and it runs 10 minutes after the first backup. I don't use compression on that backup. If I ever want to restore the file backups and can install Backitup 12, Then, I can simply copy the job files back to their original location, and run the restore from Backitup. Elsewise, I would have to use a boot disc with the Nero ImageTool.

For my C: drive, I image it with the free Macrium Reflect. I just have to remember to do it because I don't have it scheduled. I haven't taken the time to learn how to schedule it.

That still doesn't explain why Backitup is only backing up 22 GB. Backing up 600 GB takes a long time. If it's not throwing up any errors, I would think it's still running.

    Is the target drive partitioned?

  • No, the target drive is not partitioned. And, now that I think about it, I was getting a 'backup failed' error message (small yellow triangle with exclamation mark inside it). Your strategy is interesting, but I don't like partitioning hard drives, particularly small ones, which I consider my 750GB a small one.
I, too, use Reflect Free. I typically use it to do full backups (so far just manual, not scheduled, backups). Great program.
Backitup 2014/15 don't do separate backups of the OS? Do I understand you correctly?
I've also used SecondCopy, which is great for copying document-type files. It seems you use “Update” for that — KMS

  • If you go to Control Panel, Administrator Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management, is the drive shown as completely allocated and Healthy?

    Go here-

    C:\Users\"your user name"\AppData\Roaming\Nero\Nero 12\Nero BackItUp\Cache

There should be a .txt file for the backup. Open it and paste it's contents here.

Yes, Backitup 2014 and 2015 won't back up the OS. I think I know how to get around that.

Personally, I like Backitup 12 because it has so many capabilities not contained in the later versions. I don't know if one can still backup to the cloud with 12 since I don't use it.

I don't know what SecondCopy is. An Update type backup is just a different type of backup like Incremental and Differential, which are all part of Backitup 12. The latest versions of Backitup don't have Update or Differential backup capabilities.
