Beginner: How to burn an mp4. file to a dvd disc to play on a dvd player?

Hi, I am a beginner and finding it difficult. Can any one help me. I have the software of Nero 12 which includes Nero Burning ROM and Nero Express. I have DVD+R discs which are more than 4-8 GB, if that helps.

Can anyone help to, i understand that it needs to be formatted or converted. But to what format? MPG? WMV? I have no idea what to do.

And how do I burn it, the menu of Nero Burning ROM is confusing. Too many options/settings which i have altered and I think I may have one it worng. Can anyone help please. I have few Movies in MP4 and mkv. files to burn on a dvd.. I prefer to watch these movies on my tv.

Any help will be appreciated.

To play an mp4 file on a stand alone DVD player, you'll need to convert/author it to DVD-Video.

This cannot be done with Nero Burning ROM or Nero Express. I assume, you have a Nero Essentials suite, that came with a DVD writer.

You need the full Nero Multimedia Suite with Nero Video to author a standard compliant DVD-Video disc.

If you have a software, that can convert/author media files (like mp4, mkv etc.) to a DVD structure on your hard drive, you can burn that DVD folder with Nero Burning ROM to a DVD-Video disc by selecting the "DVD-Video" option in the "New Compilation" window.

Well, I'm one of the poor fools who made the mistake of "Upgrading" my fully bought and paid for copy of Nero -- and the main thing I have noticed has been that each new version has become more and more difficult to use for what used to be simple tasks -- like burning ordinary video files (AVI and MP4) to a Video DVD

This used to be a simple task handled entirely within Nero Burning Rom back in the days of Nero 7 and even Nero 9 -- but by the time the bright boys got done splitting the program into a dozen little pieces, Nero 2104 is so damn complicated that what used to be simple tasks are now buried deep enough to be nearly impossible to find.

The so-called "Tutorials" provided with the program are utterly worthless and the online "Tutorials" are written for bits and pieces of each version (usually with no mention of which version they are talking about) so you have to start a tutorial then wait to see if it looks anything like the program you have.

You can't burn a DVD-Video in either v7 or V9 using Burning Rom unless your have the Video_TS folder. That's created in Nero Vision/Nero Video. I have v8 through v2017 installed and the procedure is the same.

When you open Nero Video in v2017, all you have to do is click on DVD, DVD-Video and then import your files and procede to the menu and burn screens. That assumes you don't want to do much editing.

Also, if you want to burn a DVD-Video in v2017, open the Nero Launcher. Then click on QuickStart. Browse to the Files that you want to use in your project. Then tell it what you want to do with them and it will take directly to DVD, DVD-Video.

In v14, open the Welcome Application and select Tutorials. Select an app and a number of tutorials are available.

V14 is the last version to have the help files embedded in it.

  • I have Nero 2014 -- and based on my experience with their "Upgrades" I don't plan on seeing what new bloat and complications they have added.

I'm sure that each of the new versions has added capabilities, but the way the entire package has been broken into too many separate programs - with inadequate descriptions and no useful help for simple and tasks (like burning a DVD from a video file) I regret ever having moved "up" to 2014 - which is far LESS capable than the version I was using before it.

Yes, after wading through each of the components several times, I finally figured out how to get Nero Video to burn a Video DVD. It is maybe slightly quicker than the old versions (although that might just be my faster computer), but it is still unbelievably awkward, and provides far less capability to do things like customizing the DVD menu screen.

I won't try to argue about which earlier versions had which capabilities -- but years ago I was using Nero Burning ROM to transfer all my videos to DVD as soon as I had the video file on my computer, it was always a simple process (albeit somewhat slow, so I tended to usually let it run overnight and just put away my freshly made DVD each morning). Nero happily converted AVI and MPG files and burned them to a Video DVD.

  • If you notice, I said you can't create a DVD-Video in Burning Rom unless you have the specified folder. A DVD-Video has a specific structure, which can only be created in Nero Vision/Nero Video, and can be played on any standalone DVD player. From your description, what you were doing with the old versions was creating a data disc. The file is copied to disc just like copying any files to a disc using the Windows capabilities. It won't play automatically in a DVD player. You have to select it from the disc and then have something that will play it. That's simple enough from Burning Rom using DVD-ROM.

I may have misinterpreted you when you said you upgraded. It looks like you upgraded to v14 from your older versions. Thus, disregard my comment about using QuickStart. That's a new feature and, when I think about it, it sounds like a variation on StartSmart.

I really don't understand what you mean by how the package has been broken down into separate programs. Every Nero suite, has the same apps. The major difference after v10 is that there is no longer StartSmart and apps such as CoverDesigner, WaveEditor and SoundTrax were made free apps starting with v14.

I also don't know how v14 is less capable than your older version. There are only a few things in the earlier versions which aren't in v14. Some of those were removed starting with v8 or v9.
