Burn BD-R with trial version of Nero Burning ROM?

Hi. Just downloaded and installed trial version of Burning ROM 2018. Tried to copy a non-protected BR disc. Image was created, but I received a message that this version can not burn BD-R discs and I need to upgrade. I'm unclear... is this a problem with the trial version that would go away with the paid version, or do I need a different program?

  • Hi Wendi-

Without going into a bunch of details about the limitations of the trial version (since I'm not sure which one (or more than one) would apply), you would be able to burn a BD with a purchased version. Since you're doing a copy operation, you can also do that with a purchased version as long as the source disc is not copy protected, as you indicated.

You mentioned Burning Rom. Just to let you know, if that's all you had and wanted to burn (not copy) video files (such as mpeg-4, .wmv, etc.) to a disc which would be playable in a standalone player, you would need to first author them to the blu-ray structure using Nero Video.

I don't know what other operations you might want to do so, I'm not sure whether to recommend purchasing the suite (which includes Burning Rom, Nero Video, etc.) or the standalone Nero Video (it doesn't do copy operations). Price wise and considering all the features you get, I would buy the Platinum v2018 suite.

  • Thanks for the answer. The "trial version" is not much of a trial, if I can't try it for the one thing that I need. I think I'll uninstall, and look elsewhere.

  • Well, every software vendor has trial versions and they all have their limitations to prevent people from just using it for whatever they want and not buying a full version.

The Nero trial versions don't allow you to burn mpeg-4, .mts or .m2ts since Nero has to pay a licensing fee for each of those formats, on a per user basis, and that fee is covered when one purchases the software. Note that your BD disc would have .m2ts on it.

They are also limited to burning 100 MB of data or 30 seconds of video. This let's people try burning but not to burn all their video and audio media, at Nero's expense. They'd quickly be out of business.

Ultimately, it's up to you. Doesn't matter to me since I don't work for Nero.
