Burn again - retranscodes for 2nd copy

Burn Again - In Nero 2014 and in Nero 12, when I get done burning a DVD or a Blu-ray disc and want to burn a second copy - When you click on "Burn Again" it goes all back through the transcoding process! Crazy enough, it doesn't do that for the 3, 4, 5th copies but does it about every time for the second copy.

I know that if you would click Burn Again and then change something, it would need to re-transcode, but I am not touching anything different than I do for the 3rd, 4th and 5th copies.

  • I tried a test in both Nero 12 Video and the Nero 2014 Trial making a DVD Structure in a folder on my hard drive. I wrote to one folder and then did a "Burn again" to another folder. There was no encoding on the second "burn".

I used versions of the Nero Flower Meadow sample that I maintain, FLV, VOB, and MP4.

This simple little test takes just a minute or two to try.

Have you tried burning to a hard drive folder?
    • I just tried it now with the Flower Video writing to hard drive with Nero 2014 Platnum version and had the same problem on reburn two (goes through re-transcoding process), but not on reburn 3 and reburn 4.

On the menu structure, I am using Smart 3D - Monitors. I didn't tweak those screens at all for this test.

Would you be willing to try it with that setting on your system to help me further pin this down?

  • I couldn't reproduce Matt's problem, but I think what might be happening is that for some reason, the TMP file that's created during the transcoding process gets deleted after the first burn process, but not after the second one. (Without this TMP file, Nero Video has to transcode the project again.)

The standard folder for temporary files created by Nero Video is your user's Windows temp folder. If there's any automatism installed on your system that deletes the content of your temp folder at a certain time, this might be the problem.
Matt, could you "monitor" the temp folder which is currently used by Nero Video?
(You can find its directory here: Options > Application Settings > Folders > Temporary files.) After the burn process is finished, the TMP file should still be there. If it is, and Nero Video still wants to transcode the project again, you should contact Tech Support... But if it's not there, you can try changing the directory of Nero Video's temp folder and see if it works then.

BTW: As soon as you close Nero Video, the files Nero Video creates in the temp folder are deleted automatically.

  • Matt Ackerman:

If you want to simply avoid all of this nonsense, create your initial DVD as a DVD Structure in a file folder. Then, use BurningROM to burn as many DVDs as you wish.

Have you sent a report to techsupport@nero.com?
