Burn Multisession CD? -- Can't Understand Manual "Instructions"

I'm unable to demonstrate multisession CD burning with both UDF and ISO file systems in the Trial Version of Nero Burning ROM 2014, running under 64-bit Windows 7 Professional SP1. Can somebody **please** clearly list the step-by-step procedure for doing this correctly (including the required ISO, and any other, settings)?

I've been reasonably successful with this in Nero 9 for years (although the manual was equally incomprehensible!), but I cannot achieve the same result in 2014. Disk Info (in 2014) for one of my Nero 9 disks says each session is indeed "UDF/ISO 9660 (Mode 1)," but when I try to Start Multisession with UDF/ISO in 2014 (I also set Mode 2/XA, as apparently recommended for compatibility though I don't really care, ISO 9660 + Joliet, and Level 2), Disk Info says the session was actually burned in UDF (only!) and Mode 1. Nero isn't warning me of incompatible settings, just changing them without notice during the burn. Looking back at the saved Compilation, I see that it did change to Mode 1 but is still set to UDF/ISO 9660 Level 2.

I have succeeded (according to both Nero 9 and 2014) in burning with "UDF/ISO 9660 (Mode 1)" on the same equipment from Ashampoo Burning Studio 12 (also a trial version, but it allowed me to fill the disk unlike Nero!), so this shouldn't be a hardware problem. (And I did uninstall one before installing the other, just to be save.) I don't like the lack of disk information Ashampoo provides with its "Analyze Disk" command, however, so I was hoping to come home to Nero. No I'm not so sure...

While on the subject of Multisession and cryptic User Manual instructions, I have never understood (even in Nero 9) how to correctly save a Compilation that can be used again, either to continue the same Multisession CD or, better yet, to save all my settings for starting the next one (as I do with straight disk-at-once CDs and DVDs). Can somebody please explain how saved Compilations are supposed to work with multisession? -- jclarkw

  • I don't know what kind of compilation you're burning. In Nero Express, let's say your burning an audio CD. When you're in the compilation window, click on the arrow to the left. At the top, is the option to save your project.

    However, I don't think you need to do this for a multisession disc. All that's required is that the first session has to be availble to burn the second session. If not, the first session won't be playable. Take a look at the help file on multisession. It provides some useful help.

    We can get into the details tomorrow and also address your other questions. I'm signing out for the evening.

    Sorry, I should have mentioned I'm burning a data CD -- although I never had to make that choice -- in Nero Burning ROM 2014 vs. 15.0.25001 (trial version), **not** Nero Express. Help seems to be verbatim out of the User Manual that I was following. Here are the steps I took:

    File>New; in the New Compilation window select CD-ROM (UDF/ISO); then go back and fill in the following tabs (others were left at defaults):

    Multisession - Start Multisession
    ISO - Data Mode - Mode 2 / XA
    File System - ISO 9660 + Joliet, Level 2, Standard ISO
    Check only Allow Path Depth > 8 and Do not add the ";1"
    UDF - Automatic (actually the default)
    Label - Automatic, add date and counter
    Burn - Checked only Write and Verify
    Write Method - Disk/Session-at-once

    Click New and save the compilation with a name for later reference; add a small folder of images to the compilation window; insert new CD-R and verify empty with Disk Info; Recorder>Burn Compilation; verify all taps that it hasn't changed; in Burn tab click Burn.

    Burn proceeds without incident pops out disk, and reports successful verification

    Exited Nero withOUT re-saving the compilation -- in other words, the saved version does not know about the added files. Re-started Nero withOUT the CD in the drive and re-opened the saved compilation. It has not changed. Insert CD in drive and Disk Info reports one session written "UDF (mode 1)."

    Since this is different from my Nero 9 Disk Info, "UDF/ISO 9660 (Mode 1)," I conclude the following:

    1) Nero 2014 has dropped the ISO file system from its recording.
    2) Nero 2014 has changed the specified mode from 2/XA to 1.

    Since I did not save the compilation at the end of burn, I'm not sure whether the Compilation Properties were also changed. -- jclarkw

  • More experiments; still confused and frustrated:

    If I now shut down Nero, insert the disk just recorded, start Nero, cancel the default compilation that is offered, open the saved compilation, change only the Multisession tab to Continue Multisession, and click OK; nothing happens. Maybe if I had saved the original compilation **after** the first track was laid down, including the folder that was added, Nero would have opened the disk immediately and presented the "Continue Multisession Options" described in the manual? Nobody explains how this should be done to make use of the clever cross-referencing-to-point-of-origin feature mentioned in the manual!)

    If I shut down Nero again, re-start it (disk still in drive), set up the default new Compilation Properties that is presented exactly as before (except Label, which I leave blank this time), and click OK, however; Nero allows me to select the previously recorded track.

    Clicking New results in a message, "The selected track uses a different file system (UDF) from the document type (UDF/ISO) you have selected. Do you want Nero to change the document type for you?" If I click OK here, I see that Nero has picked up the files and disk label that are already on the disk but has otherwise changed the Compilation Properties to agree with what it recorded -- no ISO.

    Burning this second session goes normally as well. This time I save the compilation with a new name when I shut down Nero to see what happens in the next (and final) session...

    For the final session I restart Nero with the disk in the drive, Cancel the default compilation, open the latest saved compilation (it already knows all the recorded files), add a few more files, in Compilation Properties change the Label tab to blank again but this time check Finalize Disk in the Burn tab (Continue Multisession is already checked, of course), and click OK. Nero **still** doesn't start the drive and ask to select a session. I have no idea how I'm supposed to do this!

    If I shut down Nero yet again, re-start it (disk still in drive), set up the default new Compilation Proerties by only changing the Label to blank and checking "Finalize disk," and click New, however; Nero starts the drive and again allows me to select a track. I select the last recorded track, of course, and this time no different-file-system message appears.

    I see again that Nero has picked up the files from the previous sessions and the original disk label. I add a few more files (being careful to stay below the ridiculous 100 MB trial limit!) and tell it to Recorder>Burn Compilation.

    The result is the expected read-only CD with three sessions in which all files compare exactly with the selected files and folders (binary comparison).

    In summary, you can see that I'm still up against the original problems:

    1) I can't get Nero to use the file systems or mode that I specify (at least not in multisession -- I haven't tried a disk-at-once case because I'm interested in Nero primarily for its touted multisession capabilities).
    2) I can't figure out how to use saved compilations with multisession. (I assume they work the way they did in Nero 9 for disk-at-once jobs, but I haven't verified this...)
    3) I don't understand how to use the "Continue Multisession Options" mentioned in the manual.

  • More experimenting -- I'm wasting a lot of disks on this!

    Nero 2014 Trial apparently will no let me create a UDF/ISO, Level 2 + Joliet, Mode 2/XA CD at all. I used the above settings for a No-Multisession disk-at-once data CD, but it, too, was changed to UDF only Mode 1. What's the problem here? Should I not be using Mode 2/XA, although it seems to be recommended? Or are some of my other settings the problem -- see above for details? -- jclarkw

    Dear Wither 1 -- The disk format/file system is determined from Nero's own Recorder>Disk Info function, as I had said above. In any case, I have greatly simplified the test case below. Perhaps you would be good enough to run the same test on your own copy of Nero 2014 and see if you get the same results:

    Burn a short single-session, disk-at-once, data CD-ROM (UDF/ISO) -- note the dual file system! -- with the simplest possible ISO settings (ISO 9660, Mode 1, Level 1, no extensions) and the default UDF settings. Re-insert the just-burnt disk, do a Recorder>Disk Info, and note the file system/format reported. Mine reports "UDF (mode 1)" on this test.

    I have verified that my copy of Nero 2014 can indeed detect dual file systems if they are present by inserting an older multisession "bridge" disk that I had prepared on another machine with Nero 9. Recorder>Disk Info reports "UDF/ISO 9660 (mode 1)" for that disk.

    If you also get "UDF (mode 1)" in your test, I would say that the dual-file-system capability is broken in Nero 2014. (Note that the earlier thread at http://forum.nero.com/nero_eng/topics... asserts that it has been broken since Nero 11!) Otherwise there is something wrong with my installation.

  • I don't understand. I thought the problem is that if your select Mode 2, which is XA, it's burning Mode 1.

    If you've tried to burn in Mode 2, would you open the NeroHistory.log and copy it's contents here. You might have to use more than one post to get the whole thing in. You can find it here-

    Wither 1 -- Sorry for creating confusion. The priorities for me all along have been:

    1) Burn multisession CDs -- this works.
    2) Burn "bridge" disks having both ISO (preferably with Joliet and other extensions) and UDF file systems -- this appears NOT to work and thus is my current focus.
    3) Burn mode is just another setting I noticed along the way that doesn't seem to work right. (Maybe Mode 2/XA is not allowed in bridge disks.)

    I commented that the mode changed from what I had set because it seemed like another anomaly that might be relevant to (2).

    Anyhow, I will dig up the log file you want and forward it in another post to this thread. (Apparently there is no file-attachment option in this forum, and I don't know the limit on post size.) It's likely to be large and confusing because I have tried many experiments to try to track down what's going on. The experiments went approximately in the order described over the course of this thread and did include several attempts with Mode 2/XA (apparently changed to Mode 1 by Nero). The most recent burn was the test described immediately above that demonstrates failure of the dual-file-sytem feature, even in single-session disks. It was set to Mode 1 for simplicity. -- jclarkw

    @jclarkw: you said that you wasted a lot of disks on this.
    Know that the issues you've mentioned can be reproduced when writing NRG/ISO images using "Image Recorder".

    As for the issue mentioned there: http://forum.nero.com/nero_eng/topics... (issue number 2 in your latest answer), I can confirm that indeed, the bridge mode (UDF/ISO) is broken in every version since Nero 11 to Nero 2014 (I test each trial version once a new one gets out in the hope this bug is fixed).
    Alas, each time I'm forced to stick to Nero 10 (inter alia, I have a standalone DVD player that doesn't recognize data discs other than UDF/ISO ones).

    Frank Dosh -- Thanks for the validation! Clearly the Nero design and support people don't get it. I guess I should stop tilting with windmills and choose another burning program...

    Fortunately for me, Lenovo has bundled "Corel Burn.Now 4.5" with my new ThinkPad. I had ignored it since the supplied User Guide and help file imply very limited capabilities, but it turns out this program appears to be essentially the same as "Ulead Burn.Now 4.5." I found a User Guide for this highly capable, if unsupported, software on the Web. It appears to offer most of the features of Nero, Burning ROM, and they actually work! Maybe you can find an old copy somewhere.

  • In regards to the Mode 1 vice Mode 2 question, I recommend that you send an e-mail to tech support. In general, Mode 1 is best with data compilations because it contains the most comprehensive error correction. Mode 2 is normally used for video.

    When selecting the "Continue Multisession", the original disc must already be in the drive.

    OK, Wither 1, that's quite helpful information. I was going by the **only** mention of Mode 2 in the Nero Burning ROM 2014 manual (in Chapter 3 - Data Disks), which says,

    "Selects the mode for the data. Mode 1 and Mode 2/XA are available. Newer drives can easily read Mode 1 and Mode 2/XA CDs.
    However, some older drives cannot read Mode 1 discs correctly. In the case that the disc can to be read in any case on older drives, select the Mode 2/XA format."

    Apparently yet another example of the unhelpful and misleading nature of this manual.

    It normally takes 3-5 business days to get a technical response.

    This is the same paragraph taken from the v8 help file-

  • Also, in looking at the log where XA was selected, it does use the term Mode 1. Mode 2 XA Form-1, is also primarily for data, and uses the same sector size as a Mode 1 burn so I can't tell if there would be any difference. That's what tech support would have to explain.

    Wither 1 -- Are you saying that they have it backwards and that older drives have an easier time with Mode 1? I wondered about that.

    So do you have a copy of 2014? If so, can you run the test proposed several posts ago and tell me whether it works for you? Or can you tell from the last session in the log file why it didn't work for me? Best Regards -- jclarkw

  • No, if you look at the last sentence in that paragraph from the 2014 manual, it's not decipherable. The paragraph I provided clarifies that.

    I have v8 through v14 installed so I can test just about anything. I burned a file to disc using no multisession and 2/XA from the CD-ROM (UDF/ISO) and the log looks just like yours. As said, tech support needs to explain it. When the log says Mode 1, it may mean Form 1. I don't know.

    Sorry but I missed one important step- trying it in v9.

    I burned the same file to disc in v9 using the same setting and, in fact, that log does say mode 2 in the same places it says mode 1 in the 2014 log.

    I went back to 2014 and verified that it said it was using the 2/XA settings before it burned.

  • Wither 1 -- I do not wish to badger you, but you are (perhaps rightly?) focused on the mode (1 vs. 2/XA), whereas I am more interested in the capability to burn "bridge disks." Can you confirm Frank Dosh is correct that the ability to burn CD-ROM (UDF/ISO) disks has been broken since Nero 11? Are the developers aware this?

    Also I'm not sure I understand your answer regarding the ability of older machines to read different modes:

    Going from memory here because I'm on a different system, but the burn log that i looked at last night said "no" for the bridge ISO.

    I'm not an expert but I would think that the quote from the help file is correct.

  • I looked at the log this morning for the 2/XA burn in v12 and it says UDF Mode: Automatic. The log for the 2/XA burn in V12 says UDF Mode: UDF/ISO Bridge.

    It won't muddy the waters. It's a valid method of finding out where things are when you haven't heard from them for a while. I used to use chat all the time when it wasn't restricted to just one version.

    As I've noted before, even if it's not using mode 2, mode 1 is better for data since it has data correction. Form 1 of mode 2 is essentially the same except with a different file structure to accomodate players that can't read mode 1.

    I didn't go back through the thread but, when they say something has gone to development, they'll respond when they get something back or simply fix it in the next update. It could take months to get a fix or even a reply, depending on the priority of things, so, hang in there.

    FYI, I e-mailed Nero tech support again and finally got them to admit that they were "able to reproduce the problem" -- specifically, Nero Burning ROM 2014 refuses to write ISO 9660 and Joliet file systems together with UDF when "CD-ROM (UDF/ISO)" is selected.

    I will post again if I ever hear anything from their "development department" on this issue; but I don't expect a solution anytime soon (according to Frank Dosh, this has been going on since vs. 11!), so guess it's time for me to give up on Nero. Thanks for your efforts to help! -- jcalrkw

    I presume they said they're sending it to development.

    It's good that they made an effort to try to reproduce the problem and found that they could. I think this will put them into the mode of fixing it. Apparently, an update is due very soon but I don't know if this is something that they could fix on the QT.

  • It appears that they have fixed this in recent releases (don't know exactly when, but I remember testing a version -- number 15, IIRC -- where this wasn't still fixed): burning an image disc with Nero Burning ROM 16.0.11.0 produces a correct UDF/ISO bridge DVD image.

    4 years and countless versions to fix a silly bug, way to go, Nero AG!
