Can Nero be added to the Windows Event Viewer for auditing?

For auditing purposes, we wanted to see if Nero has either some native auditing that shows the files (name/date/etc) burned to CD/DVD; or if Nero could be added to the Windows Event Viewer (.evtx) for auditing.

  • I don't know what you mean by "auditing" within Nero. Nero does create temporary files during the burning process but those are normally removed. If you burn in either Nero Express, Burning Rom or Nero Video, a log file is maintained.

    Please explain in more detail what you're looking for. There are other ways in Nero to save compilations or projects. I don't have time right now to go into them because the golf course is calling.

  • Does the log file show all files that were burned in a session?

    I know there are ways in Windows to use "EventLog.CreateEventSource" (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libr...) and the .evtx files would be saved in %SystemRoot%\System32\Winevt\Logs\ and shown in the Event Viewer.

    I wondered if someone had experience in accomplishing this or not. If we could create the event viewer, then potentially we would have our audit trail of files that were burned to CD/DVD.

    I don't know anything about using the Event Viewer to track Nero- You can send an e-mail to techsupport@nero.com for further advice.

    If you use either Nero Express or Nero Burning Rom, the saved log is called the nerohistory.log and it should show all files that are burned. If your using Nero Video, the burn log is called nerovideolog.txt. If you want to ensure that the information is retained for each burn session, it would be best to backup the log after each burn. I don't think either log retains the burn information forever. It seems to me that, at some point, they are replaced.

  • I did find the "NeroHistory.log" - based on the Japanese, I cannot say the specific folder, but it looks like it was in the Application Data -type area.

    It appeared setup for showing one file "TestImage.iso" and then several writing sessions that must have been part of the same open session or something, because it only referenced that file one time.

    So, I'm going to have them perform tests with different files, to see how the log is populated then.

  • This is the location for the nerohistory.log file when using Nero v2015-

    C:\Users\"the user name"\AppData\Roaming\Nero\Nero 16\Nero Burning ROM

    The nerovideolog.txt file is in the same path except it's in the Nero Vision folder.

    v2014 and v2016 files are in the Nero 15 and Nero 17 folders, respectively. Use the version number for all earlier versions of Nero.

  • The latest test was burning several files from a directory our IT support team adds on all systems. Once they performed the action, I pulled down the history log and I could see current write activity, but it did not indicate what the files were.

    Well, at least two of those appear to be for burning an ISO file so there wouldn't be a listing of the files within it during the burn. Perhaps I'm misinterpreting the log.

    In the last case, it's a multi-session disc but, as you know, it doesn't say what was burned. In the case of multi-session, what was burned is saved for future reference when a new burn is made to the same disc. Not sure where that's saved.

  • Yes, there is previous ISO information - and agreed, wouldn't expect a list of files internal to that.

    Thanks for reviewing, I'll try digging around more on the system today and see if I find any other information.

    In theory, if they burned to a single-session disc, it would close out the session and potentially provide more data in the History log. Sound feasible? :-)

  • Normally if you're burning a data disc or audio CD file, it will list the files being burned. I'm just going on my experience in reviewing hundreds of log files, so, I might not be 100% correct.

    For burning a video project in Burning Rom, it won't show the name of the actual video since one is burning either a video_ts, BDMV or AVCHD folder.

    I couldn't find where Burning Rom saves the data for a multi-session disc. That data has to be available when continuing the multi-session disc or one won't be able to read it later.
