can't restore file *.nbi - Please help me

I purchased a Verbatim external HD on which I had uploaded very important outlook files (.pst). I have installed the Nero BackItup & Burn Essentials program (ver.5.2.22001) present on my HD for free on my laptop. I accidentally confirmed the synchronization message and your Nero BackItup deleted all my important data on the HD Vertatim and replaced it with a backup of the data on the laptop PC. I tried to restore the data, but without success. I find on the C disk of the laptop a .nbi file of 26,01Gb, created on the same date on which my data was lost.
I also bought version 5.0.14001 of Nero Backup, but without success.
Can you please help me ??
I am desperate for the serious loss of essential .pst files for my work.
I remain in hopeful expectation.
A greeting.

  • Hi Gioacchino-

I don't know where you purchased those old versions of Backitup which came with Nero v9 and aren't the latest but some Essentials versions won't restore the backups.

However, I'll give you the easiest method for recovering those files-

Simply rename the .nbi file from XXXXXXXXXX.nbi (number of X's is irrelevant) to XXXXXXXX.zip. Then open that file with a good .zip program such as 7-ZIP, J-ZIP, etc. Use the Extract feature to extract the files to the folder of your choice. Note that files with long file names may be truncated. Even so, they should still open in the appropriate software.

  • for Wither 1 -Hello, thanks for your immediate feedback. I have already tried to turn * .nbi files into * .zip files, using the rename by Dos command, but opening the file with 7-Zip, tells me that you don't it is an archive file.
Can you tell me a version of Nero Backup I can buy to recover the * .pst files?

for Omega tester - hello, thanks for your interest. you're right, I lost some very important files and my desire is to get them back.

  • I've got a bunch of work to do outside today so I haven't looked at all the options.

I guess you ran Autobackup and it formatted your drive. It warns about that but a lot of people don't pay attention. However, you might be able to get your files back on that drive by using something like Recuva, Restore My Files, etc.

Would you clarify what 7-Zip said. I don't understand what you wrote.

There may be other options for recovering the files from the .nbi but I'll have to look later.

  • Dear Wither1,
no problem for the off-line job. Thanks again for your great interest in my case. You exactly hit my problem.I mistakenly executed Autobackup and formatted my disk E:, losing my important data on external HD. What I want now is to recover these important files of mine.
If I understand correctly how Nero Backup works, at this point perhaps it is better to focus our attention on this recovery of .pst files and not on the .nbi file.
What can you advise me to do this?
I am very grateful for the interest and I look forward to your kind reply.

  • I responded to this 2 days ago but, apparently, my response didn't post. Not sure exactly what I said.

I gave you a couple of programs you can try (they're not free) to recover the files from the external drive. Even the Nero RescueAgent might work, even though it's not really intended for that, but I don't know if you have it.

In Backitup, Tools, do you have the option of creating a bootable disc with the ImageTool?

    You didn't answer my question.
