can't play dvd movie on nero 12

  • I'm asking you to create the Video_TS that's not on a DVD to see if the player has anything to do with it. I don't know what's causing the NMH behavior. Like it or not, we have to do trial and error. I'm not a programmer who's familiar with the software code.

You can't drop one of the sample photos under the Pictures tab on that screen into the box where it says "drag video clip or picture here"?

I hope you're not using a 64 bit version of XP.

  • One more hint for error hunting by Nero development:
This thread shows another problem about playing movie discs.
Because NMH doesn't work without BD player ( even if the system doesn't contain a BD drive! ), there is a certain probability that the two problems are coupled by this SW module.

This is no direct help for Davids problem, but I am pretty sure there is a problem/error in the player, which has to be eliminated by Nero.

  • Wiyther,

Now I understand the purpose of testing it this way...makes good sense.

...but...yes...I can't drag/drop any pictures...either the ones that show up in NMH main window..or my own pictures which are elsewhere ,,in "my pictures"..or in "my Documents..

I can "drag" them..but can't "drop" them into that area where it says to drag/drop.

  • Wither,

I can drag/drop my pictures..however..into the upper panel..under the "MY MEDIA" title..using the "Pictures" tab.....just to the right of the dark grey large square..

then..when I click "next," it asks if I want to "Save"..if I click "yes"..I get a "SAVE" down near the "START" of my desktop..I can "expand" the latter and then select where to "save it"....

but....when I click "Next," it says that the movie is "empty"..and will be "deleted."

If I had said "No" when asked whether to "Save," I'm back at the original Nero Video window...

No..I have Windows XP Pro 32 bit...

  • I'm not following the stuff about the large grey square. I would need a screen shot. However, if you can't drag the photos to the Storyboard, then you would get the error when you click next.

Now we've found two areas where things don't work.

This thread is so long that I didn't go back and look to make sure you have all the latest updates installed. Open Nero Video. In the Help, select About, About Nero Video. What is the version number? Do the same thing in NMH.

  • Wither,

The large dark grey square I referred to..is the one shown on the screenshot you sent me several posts ago..Yours shows a colorful butterfly in that area...

    WMH version is: 1.22.3600

    Nero Video version is: 12.5.4000

I did get all the latest updates.

Remember too..that I have installed this Nero 12..fresh..after three (3) clean reformatting of hard drive..three (3) times...so.."corruption" of the Nero software is NOT likely..

The non-playing of some DVD movies was obvious on ALL of these several installations..

this "New" finding of inability to drag/drop pictures has only been discovered right now..as a result of your suggestion of a work around testing of Video_TS..

To me..this Nero 12 definitely has "bugs."

Have you personally used Nero 12 on a Windows XP Pro OS?

  • I should mention that I think Omega Tester had v12 on XP. I've never had it. I don't recall him having any such problems. I know about other problems he had.

There is definitely something wrong with the installation. I don't know if reinstalling the C++ 2010 redistributable would help. I assume that when you reinstalled XP you also reinstalled the drivers for your motherboard and graphics card, if you have one.

Personally, I think you should just download the v14 trial and install it. Then run the check for updates. Don't install the Content pack. Then try Nero Video. It might even fix NMH.

    Wither,

Yes..I reinstalled the Graphic Drivers for my ATI graphic card (I HAD to..obviously, to get normal viewing)..and I installed the latest Chipset from the HP site..for my particular HP computer..

Uninstalling/re-installing the C++ Redistributable makes no sense to me..I already did three (3) clean reformat/re-installs of the OS already before..which included this.

Installing the Trial version of Nero 14 also seems not a good move. First..the Trial version may NOT have full function of Nero Video...and..it does NOT have capability to play DVD movies..so i can't imagine it could "fix" NMH.

Furthermore..I've read on Google search..that doing so..can really mess up Nero 12..the Trial of Nero 14 alongside Nero 12 HAS produced "problems."

Is the latter your experience from your years on this Forum?

Frankly..I've really "given up" on both these problems..and Nero Software..

It's just not worth all the trouble!

I'd be willing to try a full Nero 14 if I got it "complimentary" from Nero (for all my trouble over the past almost 2 months)...

..but buying it myself...if I found the same problems immediately...I'd likely be unable to get a refund because I'd first have to go through MANY weeks of frustrating once/week responses from Tech Suppory folks..thereby exceeding their 14-day refund policy..or whatever "excuse" they'd raise re: a refund..

    Dr. Pressman:
Just a note. There's is a list of some version 12 issues referenced
here. I think two observations about that post are pertinent:

    1. Very few of the bugs were fixed in version 2014.
    2. None of the bugs have been fixed in version 12.

If your scientific investigation confirms an error in version 12, let me pose to you your question, "What exactly do you think will happen?".

P.S. I cannot download and test the Dec. 18 updates. So, my list may need updating. However, I haven't seen any Nero announcements of changes to version 12.

  • The C++2010 redistributable is installed by Nero. It's not part of XP unless you have something like Visual Studio or another program that uses it.. I'm not sure which redistributable Nero installs for XP. You would have to look in Control Panel, Programs.

I have 4 versions of Nero side by side on this computer and 6 versions on my main computer. There was one side effect that I remember when v14 was installed alongside v12 and that was fixed in an update. Actually, I don't see what you have to lose by installing v14 since v12 isn't working. It's no big deal and if it doesn't work, then uninstall it.

Creating a DVD-Video slide show in the v14 trial version is possible. The biggest deal with the trial is that you can't work with mpeg-4, .mts or .m2ts. Of course, NMH needs various plug-ins for playback, etc.

    Wither,

    Well...

    I tried...

    I first uninstalled Visual C++ Version 10.0.40219..then the KB2565063..

but..when I tried to re-install..I got an earlier Version! Couldn't get the Version Nero installed.

Then..I proceeded to install the Trial Nero 14..It went through all the processes..but..in the end..I got a window that it failed!!!!

Well..right now..at least, I got back Visual C++ Version 10.0.40219 in that process!

    (and..via Windows Update..that KB2565063..

    So..back to "Square 1."

  • Wither,

I don't need that redistributable now..the visual C++ WAS installed yesterday during the failed Nero 14 Trial ..

..but..I notice that your link is to a service pack for Visual C++..what Nero downloads..and installs is JUST the Visual C++..not that Service Pack..and..right now..Windows Update does NOT offer..or suggest as an "option" the Service Pack..

...confusing...maybe Version 10.0.40219 already includes it..

Really..I can't now remember the wording of the failure..

...... a window came up which said that it was unsuccessful..and to try again..

  • Wither,

    there was no "error" message..as I recall..just "unsucccessful..try again" as I recall..

    no..it did not fix anything..

    You're kidding!

..contact Nero Tech Support.????.they'll just tell me to try again..

    Anyway..what's the point?

I'm going toh ave to change to Windows 7 pretty soon..and that will wipe out everything in the process..and I'd have to be completely nuts to pay money to then install a full version of Nero 14....After all...the only software I'd ever use is just the burning..which I can achieve by using one of the free OEM Nero 10 discs that I have here.....

Looking back over all of this...it might just be that Nero and dot net 4.0 might be the cause..

Like MANY XP users..after dot net 4 is installed via Windows update, I and MANY others found that the boot-up & load of our computers became VERY SLOW.Eventually, I found a work-around on a Google search which involved a "Command"..which..after about 10 minutes..corrected this issue on all three (3) of my computers which developed the "slow loading"....

Now..since Nero..somehow..uses/requires dot net 4, I have been wondering if the "fix" above may have caused trouble with Nero

Right now..it's too much trouble uninstalling/re-installing dot net 4..and..of course.. I cannot download and re-install Nero 12...and..even if that worked..I'd not trade getting Nero to work..for very slow "loading" which was a real PITA!

  • For .net framework, all you would do is find the Microsoft .net framework 4 client in Programs and Features and click on it as to uninstall it. It offers two options. One is a Repair. You run that and reboot. It only takes a few minutes. I thought we went through that already as a possible cause of your problem.

I guess you caught on to my little bit of sarcasm.

Then..as expected..got "slow load"..had to use the "cmd" fix...then."Restore" my computer....now..hopefully "back to square 1."

So....futility..more time wasted on this buggy Nero nightmare!

    Just to become serious:
The topic of this thread is a non-functioning DVD player in Nero 12 under WinXP. Not playing all DVDs is equivalent to non-functioning!

But the main discussion here is about changing the host for the buggy software. And no contribution from a Nero official.
    It's just ridiculous!

  • Slow startup is usually, but not always, caused by excessive services and programs loading during startup. The best way to check it is to run msconfig.exe and look in the Services and Startup tabs and disabling those things that don't need to be loaded. For instance, most Programs don't need to be loaded at startup. Not loading them at startup doesn't keep them from working. Obviously, you probably want your anti-virus loading and, if you were doing scheduled backups with Backitup, you would want it running in the Services and Startup.

I still don't understand the message from the v14 installation. It might say it was interrupted or something like that.

  • Wither,

No...it was CAUSED by dot net 4..on MANY XP OS's...many, many reports of this..but just on XP OS computers...

..was caused by NGEN..(whatever that means) loading properly..The "fix" DID fix it for me before..and today...

..so..I don't have to go through what you described..I am already familiar with that..and the reasons underlying..but THIS had nothing to do with any "Service" loading..

    ..just dot net 4...

    _________________________________-

"interrupted"..maybe..can't recall right now..I think I would have remembered that word, however..

Nevertheless...I'm so tired of all of this..and.really don't see the point..

    You recall..that I've alreasy downloaded..and re-installed Nero 12 three (3) times..onto three (3) "clean" Windows XP Pro OS...

    ..and..none of this corrected anything....

Right now..my computer is working fine..other than those Nero App's and the Safe Mode issue..(I can still get Safe Mode with Networking)..

I just don't want further issues..I'm NOT anxious to have to re-format, etc., etc.. again..too much time involved..as you know...especially knowing that, pretty soon, I'm going to have to do that in upgrading to Windows 7....

  • Omega Tester,

No need at all to apologize for anything!

This "thing" is..by no means..a "scientific pursuit"..

I wish it were..but...missing..is ANY input from the folks at Nero who would know what "interactions" with a common "system" like mine are involved so that Nero 12 can work...

Really..one has to know what's "in the black box"..and what makes it work properly..and what factor(s) could likely mess this up...

Otherwise..despite sincere efforts to utilize previous anecdotal interventions extrapolated from other situations can only lead to a solution that is fortuitous.

This is not the first time that I've run into a similar dead-end problem withj my computers..Years ago..when my son first got these HP business Desktops,I installed a popular high-end Creative soundcard...

I quickly ran into BSOD...contacted Creative.."never heard of it" reply..no "solution"..

However..in a Google search..I found an entire Forum on just this problem..Apparently, this only occurred with HP business desktops..could not be fixed...However,on my own, uninstalling the Creative soundcard solved the problem.

However..the entire process of finding the "cause"..took many weeks of frustration..reformatting, etc., etc...all the while, relying on Creative's denials...

    The point???

Such companies do not really care to admit..look into..or resolve "bugs." At least, I was able to return that soundcard to Best Buy.

You see...I was his friend since I was only 14 years old..You can read about that in the new book.."The Kid...The Immortal Life of Ted Williams" pub. 2013..and in "Ted Williams - The Pursuit of Perfection" pub. 2002..

look for me in the Index of both books the latter book can be gotten through your local library or its consortium..probably

    David
    • I read the review you mentioned earlier. You may be interested that some neuroscientist type podcast I've listened to credited Ted Williams' success to constant practice. He apparently would leave practice with "used" baseballs and head over to a neighborhood "sandlot" and practice into the night with the locals. You may know something about the veracity of that claim. Incidentally, the speaker was pointing out that "professional" sports players are performing amazing feats in that major league baseballs generally come too fast for "evaluation" - it's all reaction tuned by practice. Same for men's professional tennis, etc.

Are you going to try to install v14 in it? We've done this before (in fact i did it myself but I don't think it was for Nero). When I think about it, I should have done that for Nero v8. I have it on my secondary internal hard drive but I have to reboot to get to it.

If you get to read that new book..I recount my practicing with him in the Harvard batting cage on rainy days...

He always was in full Red Sox uniform when we did that....he felt that it was important for him..somehow....something that I'm sure he wouldn't do on a plain sandlot with locals.

yes..he would always be practicing hitting..and had no trouble getting his team-mates to accomodate...either early or after games..or on off-days..

  • Yes, I suggest installing the trial version in a different user account. It may or may not make any different since I think all users have administrative rights in XP. I thought about asking you to try to install it in Safe Mode with Networking.

While I'm thinking about it, there should be a Nero installation log file in the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Maybe you can find it and take a look at it to see what the problem was with v14.

  • This installation log file is part of NeroSupport.cab David sent to tech support yet.
NeroSupport.cab contains a lot informations about David's system and the errors that occured while a Nero application, includes install, was running.
Thus Nero could analyse very well, where the problems arised.

About error recovery. Many years ago I learned about compiler construction, that the error recovery is a important part of the parser.
The main task of this compiler part is the decision whether a program adheres to the syntax ( and semantics ) of a program language. But the parsing should not be finished at the first point where the language rules are violated. Therefore the biggest part of the parser tries to find a new start point to continue and to give meaningfull error messages. This isn't trivial because the writer of the compiler cannot know what types of errors and misunderstandings the compiler will be faced.
My generation knows that wasn't realised really in the good old days of Turbo Pascal under DOS. The target of Borland was a small and fast compiler. But "small and fast" wasn't true for the development process because of the many new starts of the compilation.

Looking at the behaviour of some Nero software today, I can see similiar effects. New versions of the suite are pushed to market as fast as possible. To achieve this the error recovery tasks cannot be developped as necessary. This is an experience I've acquired in years of software development.

  • To my knowledge, David hasn't sent tech support his NeroSupport.cab file to help resolve the v14 installation issue. I assume he did for the v12 problems.
