  • Using full retail version Nero 12

on "properties" and "autoplay" on my DVD players (Sony)..there is NO OPTION to play DVD movies using Nero 12...IT SHOULD BE LISTED THERE.

So..when I put a DVD movie in the DVD tray..it WON't/CAN'T play a DVD movie using Nero..

Of course, I CAN play DVD movies by using my installled Cineplayer and/or Windows Media Player...

..so...the "codecs" which are needed to play DVD movies appear to be missing in my Nero 12

I am using Windows XP professional..a fresh install..

  • OK, before can check, why the autoplay entry is missing, we should verify, that playback works:

Please start Nero Media Home (or Kwik Media, if you haven't updated yet) and check, if the playback works.

  • I’m very sad!!
I just refortmatted my hard drive again..re-installed all those 200+ Microsoft Updates...took MANY HOURS!!!

Then..re-installed a fresh version of the Nero 12..did the "updates"....but..with or without the Nero updates..Kwik Player or (now) Media Home,..

when I try to oplay a DVD movie..IT WILL NOT PLAY IN NERO 12!!!

..and..when I go to look at my DVD drives (in "My Computer")..and go to "Properties"..and then to "Autoplay,"..there is NO OPTION listed for playing DVD movies with Nero 12!!

Nero 12 SHOULD play DVD movies..

I have now spent MANY hours on this...

...I have "Googled" this "issue"....no luck!

What is wrong..and how can this be resolved..at no further cost to me??

I bought Nero 12 for the "feature" of "playing DVD movies"..which I couldn't get on the "free" OEM version of Nero 8..or Nero 10..

    that's why I bought Nero 12..

Please try to help on this..

Obviously (I think)..I'm "missing" the necessary ??Codecs, etc..to play DVD movies...

    Many thanks!

  • I assume you have all the updates installed along with the content pack and Nero Media Home.

Do you have any mpeg-4 files?

If so, open Nero Video, Make Advanced Movie. Try to import one of those. Can you do it?

  • No..I don't have any mpeg-4 files...

I just did a complete reformat of my hard drive..as I said before..

another interesting thing...I just installed the "free" Real Player..which, also, is supposed to play DVD movies..

Under "Properties" and "Autoplay" on by DVD drives..it DOES list Real Player as an option to play DVD movies..

    ..but..when I try to play a DVD movie...it doesn't...just a Real Player empty screen..with all the "controls"..but nothing happens.

Also..interesting..I have another similar computer..also just reformatted hard drive, etc..

..I put Real Player on that computer..and it WILL play DVD movie!!!!

Because Nero 12 cannot be used on more than one computer, I have not uninstalled it..and tried to put it in on my other computer..fearing that it will cause a loss of Nero 12 altogether..

    the other thought I had..

I think I originally installed this Nero 12 on that other computer a year ago..but uninstalled it because it seemed, at the time, too "complicated"..I felt that one of the "free" OEM's of Nero 8 or Nero 10 was "adequate"..albeit lacking in those "free" versions the ability to play DVD movies..

Now..could it be that the installation of this Nero 12 on this computer (rather than on the original computer) is causing this inability to play DVD movies???

I'm totally baffled by all of this....

    _____________________________________________--

Basically..on this computer, Nero 12 DID NOT INSTALL THE NECESSARY CODECS(???), etc. for playing DVD movies..that's why Nero 12 is not in the "options" in "Autoplay" for either of my two DVD players of this computer.

  • Jens,

    I think I figured out why ..

I think that Nero Tech sent me a "link" to the "Trial Version of Nero 12"..

..the "Trial Version of Nero 12" doesn't have the capability to play DVD movies.

I paid for the "FULL VERSION OF NERO 12."

Therefore..the only "resolution" is for Nero to send me a "link" for the "FULL VERSION OF NERO 12"..

Hopefully..I could then use my "Valid" Validation number/serial number.

I have spent MANY hours on this dilemma..

I'd really appreciate your helping me..I think I'm correct.

Many thanks for your anticipated help in finally resolving this dilemma.

  • When you insert your purchased serial number either during the installation or in the Nero ControlCenter after installation, the trial becomes the full version. All you need to do is run the check for updates aftwards.

I asked about the mpeg-4 because, if the patents aren't activated, then you can't play the mpeg-4 format. However, a DVD-Video doesn't contain a specific video format so that shouldn't have been the issue. I tweren't thinkin'.

What you can do is check to see if there is a newer firmware and/or driver for your drive (s).

  • Wither1,

I did check..there are no newer drivers for my DVD drives..

..and..I know that the DVD drives are good..because, I have been able to play DVD movies on this computer..with those two DVD drives using Windows Media Player and/or Cineplayer..(which DO appear in the "Options" in "Autoplay")

..and..there's nothing wrong with my computer..

I have now reformatted my hard drive three (3) times)..tried to play DVD movies with Nero 12..with no antivirus, etc. or other Media players installed..

    ..the computer is absolutely "clean"!

I have now uninstalled..and re-installed Nero 12 THREE (3) times... using both of the necessary "links"..and..correctly put in my valid paid-for Serial number each time..

I even tried to "manually" open up several regular DVD movies when "MediaHome" is "open"...the DVD movies "start"..just show the usual introductory FBI and Interpol "Warning"..but ..then...the movie WON'T play..the screen stalls..and, then, I have to go to "Task Manager" to "end" MediaHome..

..so..I've spent MANY hours on this..

    The only "resolution" is..

    1. get a full refund from Nero

    or

    2. Nero to send me a valid "links" and new valid Serial number for their Full Nero 14 Version.at no additional cost to me..

I think that there are no other reasonable alternatives..

  • I inserted a regular DVD movie with MediaHome "open"..

The movie almost "starts"...but....showing just the FBI/Interpol "warning"..then STOPS..the screen freezes...

I don't know where "Devices" are in MediaHome..

If I go to the Nero Express or Burning ROM, my two optical devices ARE listed..but that is only, of course, for "burning."

I don't see any "Devices" tab in MediaHome..

Also..I HAVE checked..and my DVD drives have the latest "drivers"

I don't know how to find out about "new Firmware"..The HP website always lists new firmware for its optical drives..but none are listed for my two HP-supplied Optical Drives (DVD players)..

I..the customer..should NOT have to go through all of this..just to be able to play regular DVD movies..with a product which is supposed to play DVD movies

  • I just re-checked on the HP "download" page for my HP computer model..it does list ffirmware updates for my two optical drives after all.

..but..I just "Googled" about "updating Firmware for Optical Drives"

..It's a HUGE risk to do this!!!

It can destroy..forever..your currently working DVD drives..It CANNOT be undone if there is a problem!

This is, obviously, something that I am NOT going to do!

..and, as a Nero customer..who bought a product in good faith..I should NOT have to to do this..risk ruining my Optical Drives!!!

    I'm sure that you..or anyone else..would agree!

A full refund from Nero is the ONLY reasonable..and fair "resolution."

  • The firmware updates at HP are specific to the model number of your system. I update the firmware of my drives when available. Since you mentioned drives, are you using a PC or laptop. For a PC, the firmware updates should be obtained from the drive manufacturer's website.

to my knowledge, firmware versions aren't listed in Device Manager.

In Nero MediaHome, when you connect a device or insert a disc in a drive, Devices should show up on the left hand side of the screen above Photos and Videos.

  • I have an HP dc7600CMT business desktop pc..

On their "Download Support page" for this system..they have a "Firmware" update section..but..the DVD drives listed are NOT the mine!

I just used "Device Manager" to obtain the model numbers of the two (2) DVD drives..

I also did a Google Search for Firmware updates for those two specific DVD drives..it listed a Firmware update for each of them..

..but..the "explanation of the purpose" of the Firmware updates was just for some minor problem with a Roxio program..which I've never installed..that Roxio "issue" had NOTHING to do with playing DVD movies.especially because those Roxio programs don't have a playback of DVD movie capability..just burning..as you know...

..so..I see no reason to update the firmware..especially with the "risk" of destroying my DVD players should something go wrong in that process..

    ..too risky..

I've just sent..per their request..that "log file" that they want..

They won't give me a refund..

    ___________________________-________________

You did mention that new versions of Nero ("Iterations") may have problems with older DVD players.

With that in mind...is it possible to get (at no cost) an "older" full Version of Nero which just might allow me to play DVD movies..that is, a Version which WOULD do this with my circa 2005 HP dc7600 CMT abnd its DVD players????

  • I didn't say it had problems with the drives. My drives are 6 years old and one doesn't have a firmware update available and I'm installed the only firmware update for the other. Firmware updates aren't going to destroy your drives. If you don't follow instructions provided for installing them you can have a problem but I just usually run the .exe. Also, don't believe the notes for the firmware updates are complete.

I don't recommend downgrading to a different version. Work with tech support to resolve this issue. It might not be firmware.

    wither,

After MANY weeks..Nero Technical could not diagnose..or fix this..Luckily, I finally got a refund..

Now..I want to uninstall this Nero 12 FULLY..and..then..install the limited OEM Nero 8 (or 10) that came as CD with my DVD drives...

    ..At least..with these..I can burn CD's..

    ___________

Now..I know I can/should uninstall Nero 12 via the ADD/REMOVE in Control Panel of my Windows XP PRO OS..

but..as we both know..there will be over 200 Nero files ":left over"..and several NERO keys left in the Registry..

From your vast personal experience..could you tell me how to remove ALL of this old Nero "stuff"..

Could you please be as "detailed" as possible..

For example..after "deleting" all of the Nero files..and deleting the NERO in the software headings of the Registry..I've read that there is also a Nero Registry key under Microsoft Window in the Registry...

I'd like to get rid of ALL Nero..before installing any other Nero OEM version.

These "full" version Nero's are so "bloated"..and pervasive..that I don't want to mess up my computer by deleting anything that is "shared" by other "stuff".

I don't want to do another "reformat"

    ________________

My "experience" with Nero Technical is very disappointing..

I've searched the Internet thoroughly..but cannot find any other customers with this "problem" of not being able to play DVD movies..and Nero Technical will not answer whether they have ever seen this "problem" before..diagnosed its "cause"..or "fixed" it.

I put this directly to them..several times..because..obviously..I'm not going to now order and pay for Nero 14..which..I'm pretty sure ..also won't allow me to play DVD movies..

Nero Technical..it appears..is just satisfied that I've gotten a refund..and they're "done" with me and my "problem."

You will never be able to get all Nero related entries out of the registry. About the closest you can get is to use something like Revo to uninstall v12, instead of uninstalling from Control Panel. Of course, you could always reinstall your OS but I don't think that's necessary.

Note that v8 isn't compatible with Win 7 and 8.

    wither,

First..I am already aware that Nero 8 is't compatible with Windows 7 (which I'm going to change to after April 2014)..I'll then use Nero 10 OEM CD which I have too.

Next...I already tried Revo during the 3-4 times i previously uninstalled this Nero 12 full version..I found that Revo did not remove any of the hundreds of Nero files..or the Nero Registry entries that were left. It wasn't any different than my having just done an uninstall via the ADD/Remove method.

So..what do you personally do...??? Do you manually remove Nero files..then go to the Software headings in the Registry and delete the NERO headings for all keys and subkeys?..

Also..when using the removal via ADD/REMOVE..do you first remove the NERO 12 entry.?..Will that automatically uninstall and remove the individual Nero applications listed separately in the ADD/REMOVE list?
Obviously..I want to remove all of these..and I don't want to run into the problem that the individual entries "can't be uninstalled" because "the source can't be found"..(if you understand what I mean)..
I've also seen on the Internet..advice to al souninstall various Windows things like Dot Net 4. etc., etc..is that really necessary..in your experience??

Certainly..I'm NOT going to reformat my OS again..It takes days to re-install every thing!..a nightmare!!!!

.. I'm intrigued by your reference to a current similar "case" which you're working on..can you direct me to that "thread?"

    Many thanks once again!

  • I don't do anything extra. I just uninstall from Control Panel. It's not worth going through the registry to remove thousands of Nero related entries. Ditto for any other software I uninstall.

When you uninstall v12, I don't think it uninstalls the v12 content pack. If it doesn't, you can uninstall it separately. If you want, you can uninstall the v12 Content pack first.

Don't uninstall other things like .net framework. You don't know if another program is using it.

I hear you about the OS. I image my C: drive. I also do a daily update backup of personal files which I keep on a different partition using Backitup 12.

  • Wither,

    Update...

Obviously..I've been following that other thread re: Peter Saphier..

With further investigation..I found that I can, indeed, play some commercial DVD movies..but cannot play several others.via Nero 12

The ones that play..or don't play are DTS..makes no difference.

On the ones that don't play..when I inset the DVD (with Mediahome "open")..the window immediately changes to DVD playback screen..and displays just the the "FBI Warning"..and on some DVD's, the sound and logos of the movie studio..then..it stops..and nothing futher happens..When I then click on the upper left top to go back to "browsing..I get Mediahome again..with a screen showing the movie title..When I click on the "Play" arrow at the bottom..or click on the upper left corner (where the "drive" and movie are listed...either way..the screen changes back to "Playback" dark screen..and is "frozen"..Clicking on the "Play" arrow does nothing..and, I just get an "hourglass" symbol when I try to exit at the top right corner..I then have to use "Task Manager" to end the program..but, often, I can't even get "Task Manager by pressing CTL/ALT/Delete..and have to restart my computer..

As I told you, I want to find out the cause..since I'm reluctant to buy Nero 14..because..like Peter..I don't want the aggravation of having the same problem with Nero 14.

    Nero Tech won't help because I received a refund..but..via Peter's similar problem..I'm hoping that a "cause"..and a solution can be found..

Does the above "update" clarify anything?

All of my commercial DVD movies DO play on Windows Media Player and Cineplayer..and..as I previously told you..I have tried reformatting my hard drive..and uninstalling/re-installing Nero 12 many times..with no antivirus/anti malware programs..

  • I'm wondering if you're not waiting long enough for the video to be buffered, for those that won't play. The fact that you have to kill it via Task Manager or rebooting, indicates that it's still working.

If you have some other software unnecessarily running in the background that could be using resources, it could cause this problem.

Other things like not cleaning up temporary files periodically using the Windows Disk Cleanup utility (I don't know if you should run that on a SSD, if you have one) or defragging, can cause the slow behavior.

  • Wither,

    I have "waited long enough."

Ordinarilly, as you know, when the screen switches to "Playback," there is a clock-like icon in the center ..with "hands" that spin as it "loads."

When I try one of the DVD movies which won't play...that clock-like icon does NOT spin..it is frozen..consistent with a program that is, indeed, "frozen."

I always "clean up" temporary files etc. via Norton, Webroot Secure Anywhere. the old discontinued Webroot Window Washer and Microsoft "Clean Up"..

..so..since other DVD movies DO play with Nero 12..the ones that won't play would all be working/facing the same background ..

If, then, something is "interfering in the background," it should...equally negatively effect all the DVD movies..not just the ones which won't play in Nero 12 on my computer.

BTW, I don't know what "SSD" is

I am VERY frustrated..I hate to "give up." My scientific curiosity, I guess!!

You see, I am a retired Physician..I'm very familiar with scientific research on so-called insoluable "problems."

Back in the mid-60's, I "invented" the Coronary Care Unit and ICU while a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School..

You can read the original article online by "Googling"...

"CIRCULATION 1965 David Pressman..The Incidence of Cardiac Arrrythmias in Acute Myocardial Infarction Studied With a Constant Monitoring System"
    i
Mllions of lives have been saved since that "paper" was published.

Also, when I was only 14 years old, I discovered a method whereby Ted Williams..the "best hitter in baseball history" could dramatically improve his hitting..

See the new book.."The Kid..The Immortal Life of Ted Williams" Pub. Little-Brown Co. released December 5, 2013..and the 7-8 pages in it about me..or Google for the "reviews" of the book which mention me..like "Sports Illustrated's " Review.

  • David,

    your right!!!

The main difference in scientific research and software production nowadays is the willingness to understand why a problem can be regarded as solved.

When I was leader of software development team, I responded mostly to a proud statement "Error is found and eliminated!" with a "How? And why is the error gone?".
Background: Only if you you why a thing is effective ( do its task ), you can know why it fails when you observe "issues".

In software development normally effectiveness isn't proofed, but assumed by lack of malfunctioning in a certain amount of test cases. ( To achieve a short time to market part of this test is done at the customer. :-( )

    Bernhard,

    Yes!

Unfortunately..this is the "situation" ..widespread in the "Industry"..whether it is Microsoft, Nero, Creative Labs..etc..

..compounded, of course, by "Tech" folks who..unlike you and me..really don't give a damn..and resort to pre-programmed inane and useless scripts...

These Tech folks have no idea how the various programs really work..what components interact with other files, etc..

..So..when a "problem" arises..reported by a customer...it never gets "escalated" ..as it should..to the folks who DO know..or Should know..

..a vicious circle..accomplishing nothing..because no one really cares to put a scientific "hat" on..and really figure out what's wrong!
    _________________________________________________

Nero makes a "Product" like Nero 12 0r 14..it's filled with "features" and "bells and whistles"...but, in truth, the "regular customer" doesn't really need..or will ever use 90% of these.

There is nothing special about Nero's DVD playback..Windows Media Player and any of a number of "free" DVD players supplied by computer manufacturers and DVD optical drives are more than adequate.b. asicaly, the average customer just needs and wants something to burn an occasional copy of a CD..or to burn a Data CD/DVD

Wither..for example..has been a volunteer for five years..and has responded to 25,000 "posts" himself..

    That's just him!

...That fact, alone, would/should indicate that these Nero Suites are filled with "bugs"...

In Medicine our Federal FDA REQUIRES that pharmaceutical Companies DOCUMENT both the efficasy and safety of their proposed products both pre and post-marketing before they receive FDA approval...Sometimes..even that scrutiny fails..resulting in FDA required "recalls"..The same applies to cars..where "recalls" are required occasionally through our Federal Highway Safety Commission.

When a "Paper" is submitted to a reputable Medical publication it is reviewd by a panel of experts BEFORE it is published..and..once published..it is expected that readers all over the world will try to confirm/deny the validity of the original article...These are the "checks and balances"..without which there is havoc!

The "answer??".....Software Developer team should anticipate..and look for "reports" of malfunction.."Problems"..unless simply resolved..should be quickly escalated to the appropriate "experts" who actually designed or closely worked on the deveopment...and, of course, "beta" testing BEFORE final "release"..with "feedback" of "problems" is an obvious good idea..BEFORE official "release" to the public.

The "solution??" for the unfortunate customer..a reasonable "return/refund" policy within a timeframe whereby BOTH the Company and the customer can reasonably be sure that the "problem cannot be resolved."

Right now..Nero's handling of such a "problem" can take MANY weeks before failure at resolution is conceded..and..for the customer, calling Nero's Tech folks by telephone..at $1.29 per minute is both impractical and unreasonable.

  • Ordinarily, I would agree with you about "bugs" and Nero is not without them (is that a double negative?). However, I experience far less than 1% of the problems I help people with. I have 6 versions of Nero installed on this system and 4 on my other. Some people can't install one. The great majority of the software problems we encounter here are system related. Five years ago, I think there were something like 300 million computers in this world and I'd wager it's double that now. No two are alike and a large number of people using, or trying to use, Nero software have systems that don't meet the Nero system requirements. I could go on and on but, there's no point.

  • Wither,

    I understand fully your points..

..but..Nero Tech did have that zip file of my system..and their only response was for me to just open up Mediahome..insert a DVD movie..

Obviously, I already knew how to do that..so that was no help..

..and..since they never mentioned any System problems revealed on my zip file, they didn't see any indication that my current system did not meet Nero's requirements.

Wither...a few posts above..I gave you an update..with more observations..especially the fact that some DVD movies do play..and some don't play and the latter just freeze in Mediahome/Playback..

Does any of that help you in trying to figure out why this is happening?

I was..obviously..hoping that my observations..and those of Peter on the other thread..combined..might give you a clue(s).

I just discovered..since you mentioned to Peter something about Safe Mode..that..when I try to access Safe Mode on my system..pressing F8..it goes into the proper screen..but..when I select plain Safe mode..it won't go into plain Safe mode...same thing when I select Safe mode with command prompt..but..when I select Safe mode with networking, it works..

I googled this..and found that this usually is caused by a virus..I then carefully checked for Virus and Malware with Norton 360, Webroot Secure Anywhere.and also did a full Kapersky Housecall scan (the latter took ? 7-8 hours)..

..no virus or malware on my system..

..and..obviously..at this point..I'm not going to go through reformatting.to correct the Safe mode issue (i never use Safe mode)..that tedious reformatting & reloading.which I've already done many times over the past several weeks....Personally, I think that it's possible that the pervasive Nero software..with its thousands of files..somehow..messed up the Safe mode..rather than the opposite..and it's too risky to try to "repair" my Windows XP Pro since I only have the HP OEM Windows XP Pro Service pack 2 OEM disc from the OEM HP Restore 2-CD set..very complicated.

    So...any thoughts?

  • I'm not going to touch the Safe Mode issue. That's a system problem and I don't think Nero has anything to do with it. I also don't know if that's affecting Nero. I also presume you're using XP SP3 since that's a system requirement for v12. You noted that you have the SP2 discs. That's why I brought it up.

I'm a little confused in regards to what you're working with. If Nero gave you a refund, they might have deactivated the patents for v12 and possibly some of the plug-ins for NMH.

  • Wither,

    Yes..I have Service Pack 3..

    ..and..assuming Nero hasn't de-activated anything...do you have any ideas?

BTW, if any de-activation, I wouldn't be able to play some DVD movies..

..and..the "situation" hasn't changed pre or post refund..

As I've said before..I've held off uninstalling..hoping for a diagnosis and ??solution..so that I can then be more confident buying the Nero 14..

I don't want to buy Nero 14..and end up like Peter on the other thread..

You see..I'm not using the Nero 12..and..am planning to convert to Windows 7 as the April 8, 2014 cut-off for Windows XP approaches..As you know, that upgrade process will delete all my current programs.

In other words, I wanted to keep this Nero 12 on this computer..just to see if there is a solution that actually fixes the playing of regular DVD movies..otherwise, it's a big gamble to blindly buy Nero 14.

I think you'd agree that this is reasonable under these circumstances.and. quite consistent with a scientific approach.

    so..any new ideas???

  • In the past, I've always advised people who have gotten refunds to not uninstall what they have or they will lose the patent activations. I really don't know if Nero does anything in this regard.

My first degree is in chemistry and my second is in nuclear engineering so I'm familiar with the scientific approach and apply it here all the time.

As an aside, where are you going to get Win 7? Microsoft has made everybody take it off their shelves and only the computer vendors are still able to install it on new systems.

Since NMH is common to v10-v14, I don't know that upgrading to v14 would solve anything.

I recommended installing the new firmware but you're reluctant to do that. Of course, there's no guarantee that it would help. You're also described a problem with Real Player, in this regard, so it doesn't seem to be isolated to Nero.

Since you brought up your Safe Mode problem, it introduces a new factor but I wouldn't think that would affect Nero since Windows isn't loaded.

You could open a command prompt and run sfc /scannow to see if it finds and fixes anything or you could run Microsoftt Fix It. The list goes on.

  • Wither,

So...with your impressive background....we are "talking the same language."

and you can better understand that someone like me (or you) just doesn't want to "throw up hands and give up."

After reformat to upgrade to Windows 7, I'd have no choice but Nero 14..

..got several "complimentary" full Windows 7 CD's with associated valid Serial Numbers direct from MS

Scannow is impractical ...much too complicated.. with current Windows XP PRO...built-in with your Windows 7

No Microsoft Fix It for Safe Mode problems..and various Registry fixes suggested on Google search are very risky I never use Safe Mode anyway...

I don't recall telling you about a Real Player problem..that program will not play DVD movies without a paid-for upgrade..

The "risk-benefit" of doing a firmware update for the HP-supplied OEM DVD drives makes me too nervous to risk damaging these drives in the process..somehow...This update, as I told you, is specifically for another unrelated issue with Roxio "burner"..not with DVD playback...

    _______________________________

Any other ideas for me to try re: the DVD movie playback???

  • Well, you did say this-

"another interesting thing...I just installed the "free" Real Player..which, also, is supposed to play DVD movies..

the sfc /scannow is about as easy as it gets. It runs and then tells you if it found and fixed anything. Normally, I recommend to run it three time. One other person ran it for me yesterday but it didn't find anything.

Fix It runs in Windows and it has a CD/DVD Reading and Writing option to determine any problems in that regard. That's why I suggested it.

I still don't agree about the firmware. Many people have solved problems either updating it or reinstalling it.

By the way, Nero v9-v14 are Win 7 compatible so you don't have to buy v14.

    WIther,

    ..to respond..

I did..in earlier post..just mention that Real Player anomaly... The "free" Real Player..which I have on three Computers is NOT supposed to be able to play DVD movies..and..it doesn't on my two HP desktops..but..for whatever reason..plays DVD movies on my Dell Laptop..(probably because other two DVD player programs on that Laptop must have Codecs that allow the "free" Real Player to play DVD movies...just an interesting anomaly..that's why I mentioned it..

The sfc/Scannow on a Windows XP OS REQUIRES that I insert the original Windows XP PRO CD...which, in my case, is just an HP OEM Service Pack 2 version...The sfc/Scannow REQUIRES ALL the files, etc. composing..and including Service Pack 3..From my Googling the Internet, I'd have to somehow slipstream Service Pack 3, etc., etc...for sfc/Scannow to have ALL the files used to check for corruption or defects..That's easy to do on Windows 7..NOT on Windows XP.

Now..I've used the MS Fix It for windows update..but I simply cannot find any Fix It tool that addressess read/write DVD's problems...

Where do I find that Fix It tool from Microsoft???

I know that Windows 7 is compatible with Nero v9-v14..BUT..my Nero 12 will be deleted in the process of upgrading to Windows 7...so...that is why Nero 14 is the ONLY option after conversion to Windows 7......

    _______________________________________

Now..other than the firmware suggestion..do you have any other ideas? I've been chasing this for 1 1/2 months..still no answer.

I REALLY appreciate your remarkable sincerity in trying to help me (and..perhaps..others) on this particular "problem"...

..but you did not design this DVD playback feature. Therefore, you must concede that, without the knowledge as to how this is supposed to work..what inter-relationships with files, dll's, Windows components, Codecs...you couldn't, by yourself..be able to look at the "history" and "symptoms" which I have supplied, the zip file sent to Nero Tech..and figure out what is wrong...

As a 5-year volunteer, I am sure that Nero Tech is aware of your expertise..and its "limits."

Therefore, what I am requesting..both for me and for Peter (other thread)..that you escalate this to the top tier at Nero Tech..to one of the folks fully familiar with this DVD movie playback feature.

This "try this..try that" approach "ain't working"....

This REQUIRES a person familiar with "what's inside the black box"..how it's supposed to work..what's necessary to make it work..and..finally..what could be obstructing/interfering/missing.

Both Peter and I have pretty common "systems"..A program like Nero 12 or 14 is promoted..and SHOULD all work on common compiter systems...

When it doesn't..it deserves..and requires IMHO, escalation to the folks who really know ALL about this feature, etc....

I'm in no position to demand this myself..because of the refund..but I'd find it hard to believe that Nero Tech would not listen to a request for such escalation from you directly..They, in fact, should appreciate that effort on your part IMHO...

This NOT..in any way..criticism of you..far from it..

..but..obviously, there is point..beyond which your expertise as an informed, experience Nero customer/volunteer is exceeded.. In such cases, it would make no sense to just "give up"..without a mechanism to escalate the issue higher up the Nero Tech "chain"..How else could "bugs" ever be known..or fixed if their is a "disconnect."

    Respectfully,

    David

    BTW..where are you located?..just curious.....
    • David,

what you describe is just the task of a QA department. From the absence of reactions by development ( corrections of errors ) I conclude that a QA doesn't really work or isn't existent.

Having a deep knowledge of software development processes ( my degree is in informatics ), I think I'm able to qualify the "output of the black box 'SW dev'".

The fact, you got an refund for the not functioning of a basic feature, shows my conclusion is not quite false.

    Wither,

    Maybe I'm anticipating..in advance..a response from you..

..that you are a just a volunteer...not working for Nero..and have no way of escalating this..

Well..Jens of your Official Nero Forum IS a Nero employee. He responded to both me..and to the other customer..Peter (other thread)..

IMHO...Jens should be informed..brought up to date...right now.. on both of our "cases" by you.and c arefully read all of the posts..back & forth...

Then...IMHO..Jens..as an employee of Nero..and in his position has an obligation to effect the requested escalation to the Tech folks..at the much higher tier..

it would be, IMHO, viwed as negligent for him not to do so. Such reasonable and appropriate action by him, I'm confident, is understood to be an essential part of his job description..

not only should he just escalate this..but..IMHO..he has an obligation to assess the response..and be an advocate on behalf of both his Forum and the parent company, Nero...

IMHO..someone has to look at this..and do the reasonable and right thing.

In the end, this "problem" is not the mistake of the trusting innocent purchaser..it is a mistake ("bug") of the manufacturer..Nero

Again..as my old friend, President John F. Kennedy once said..

"A mistake does not become an error...until you refuse to correct it."

If the Fix It used one of the other programs, then it's probably running at Startup and could be disabled or removed from the Startup. I've never noticed it doing that on either of my systems. I'll try it tomorrow.
    • I don't know why SFC /Scannow would ask for your installation disc unless it needs it to fix a problem. I've run it on occasion in Vista and Win 7 and have never had it ask me for the installation disc. Note that in Vista and Win 7, the command prompt has to be "run as administrator". As I understand it, one is always an administrative user in XP unless one creates a new user account. For Vista and Win 7, one has to right click on the command prompt and select "run as administrator".
    • Edit: I added "in XP" to the next to last sentence.

I just ran the Fix It CD/DVD option in Vista. It asks me which of my three drives I want to use for the remainder of the testing but there's no reference to another program. It then came up and asked me if I was having problems reading or writing. It ran through it in about 10 seconds and found no problems with the new drive I just installed. I then ran it on a CD-ROM drive which I know has writing problems and it identified that I can't write to it. In autoplay, I have Windows "ask me..........." set as the default for discs.

  • Wither,

    We're just "spinning our wheels."

If you set my two (2) drives..(they are two different HP drives) to "ask me" for autoplay of DVD movies..the MS Fix IT tool has no way to test read/write in Nero MediaHome..because, as you know, it is NOT listed in the autoplay choices. Did you, in fact, test your drives using Mediahome?

Next......we already know that both of my drives CAN read in Mediahome and Nero Playback for SOME DVD movies..and ALL DVD movies using Cineplayer and/or Windows Media player.

..and..even if..somehow..we could get the Fixc It tool to test one of the non-playable DVD movies in Mediahome..it would be "satisfied..I think...when the movie plays the opening FBI warning..even though that's all it will play...

BTW, after re-starting my Computer after running the sfc/scannow, I found that I lost my ATI graphic driver..had to uninstall ATI..and re-install..

the "cause" of the above..probably was due to the "legacy" ATI driver..which, BTW was apparently never "approved" by Microsoft (there is a pop-up during installation which states this)..but I have no option to halt the installation of the only current Graphic ATI driver...

So..between Peter (other thread) and me..we've got four (4) DVD dives that WON'T play DVD movies via Nero..(and my drives DO play some)..

Therefore, the "problem" is NOT likely related to the DVD drives on our computers..or to any need for firmware updates.IMHO, it is "wishful thinking" that my now updating the firmware..which clearly states the "purpose" as just resolving issues with a particular Roxio "burner" and "use after recovery"..neither of which I have..or need...

You can see..after MANY weeks..that I am more than willing to try things..but they have to both "make good sense" and have very low risk..

Obviously. we'd both have to agree that a "simple" diagnosis (and "resolution") is not within your experience and expertise.

In such a situation.."escalation" much higher is in order for this obvious "bug."

I have not heard from Jens.

  • Personally, I think your XP installation is really screwed up.

There's no way that scannow is going to uninstall your graphics driver.

The only reason that you have to deal with me is you gave up your rights to have tech support help you. I do the best I can to help people but there's only so much I know to tell you. I'm pretty much at the end of being able to help you. There are only two people I know of in the forum that are having the same problem. Think of it this way. There are two people with a problem out of thousands and, possibly, millions of users. One of them has gotten a refund, because of an intermittant problem. That leaves one. Do you think that a small company is going to waste thousand of dollars of resources to pursue one person's problem? Absolutely not.

I did find a version of the Fix It which is on a website unrelated to Microsoft that requires you to install your installation disc. I think it used something like PCreq or something like that to clean the registry. That's not necessary with the Microsoft official software.

    Wither,

do speak for Nero company? I know, you have certain connections to Nero officials.

If this is right, I'll make some annotations to this ( and cerainly other ) case:

    - David "gave up his right" because a refund was the only "help" he could get from Nero's. What a shame!
    - The number of problem reports isn't really representative for the number of customers with the same problem. David has problems to play DVDs with Nero. Most users just chose another program for this task, if Nero can't do that.
We don't know how many error reports are sent to tech support. Some customers are just awaiting an answer from tech support or the "forum" here.
    - I know the operative part of Nero is a small company. And have experience with work done in small companies. You don't have all the resources for development, but this is usually compensated by a more creative working.
    - It is true, "bug hunting" by trial and error is a very expensive job. Therefore professional software development uses verification and certification processes, which are known in informatics since decades. One instrument is code review by a QA department, which is independend from the developpers. Results of this process can be observed from outside. The way Nero reacts on many problems and errors doesn't show much of this.
    - Nero started its business, when one needed a good knowledge in CD burners and their drivers. The company achieved a great expertise and reputation in the field of burning software. But with time the suite more was expanded by multi media applications. And thus the complexity was growing. At the same time the hardware abstraction for burning devices was more standardized and integrated into the OS.
With this the complexity of interactions in device access is growing more.
Thus the structure of the development process ( including the error reporting and correction! ) has to be adjusted. My observations from outside show certain absence in this field. This is no problem, if one handles this in an open manner.
    - It is not the task of the ordinary customers to supply the broad test bed, that is necessary to check correctness ( we call this effectivity ) with the method "trial and error"! For this Nero started the beta test program ( MVP ) years ago. If this program exists yet, the test cases are not representative enough. Many free OpenSource projects are checked much better! In this field not only tests but, because of the openess of the source, code reviews are done. This leverages the quality.

    Wither,

My XP installation is NOT "screwed up." That's NOT the "cause."..it's the "result" of loading Nero on this computer.

There is no other reasonable..or scientific explanation. "If it walks like a duck..talks like a duck..it's a duck."

I have restored/re-formatted three (3) times in chasing this Nero "problem"...

This computer...before installing Nero 12..was absolutely "clean."

The "screw-up" with the Safe Mode..and the dropping out of the ATI graphic driver when I did your recommended sfc/scannow..are directly related in time sequence..

If this problem is widespread, we would have a lot more people posting about it, based on my experience.

I was remiss in not providing to David the appropriate website for Fix It-

http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/ He should select All Problems.

I agree with you in regards verification and certification process. Since I'm not privy to how Nero AG does things, I can't comment.

  • Wither,

I know you are speaking for Nero AG.
But I suppose, some guys at Nero's are happy about your effort in helping their customers.

If I look at some discussions here they resemble threads in forums for open source projects. A couple of experienced users help others, sometimes the main developer(s) post something for clarification.
    The difference is mainly:
    - in an Open Source project everybody with knowledge in programming can read the source and try to understand where bugs are hidden;
    - main developers usually are reading the posts and try to correct the issues/bugs/errors.

    • I know this and I also appreciate your helping very much.
But there are topics, where a profound and honest answer from the developers is needed.
You know much about the pitfalls of Windows and Nero, but beyond a certain point "issues" must been recognized as "possible errors" or "real errors". ANd this can only be the task of these who produced this software.
My impression over the years is, that with an increasing complexity of the Nero Suite ( which also means an increase of the probability for errors ) the Nero team isn't interested in real support ( this means error correction also ) but in releasing the next highlight ( at the moment Nero2014 ).

      BTW:
I know you are speaking for Nero AG.
      should read
I know you are not speaking for Nero AG.
. Think I was to fast in typing and posting.
    • Thanks for the correction. I assumed it was in error.
I've voiced my concern with the way problems are handled via previous posts in the forum. My biggest gripe is that they don't fix all the problems in one version before moving on to the next version. In general, I haven't had a problem with tech support as long as I keep going back when their suggestions don't work. I wouldn't say they're not interested in real support.
