can't re-install nero 7

I had Nero 7 start smart on my computer when I got it but when I started having problems with the dvd players not responding I thought maybe it has something to do with the nero program so I decided to uninstall it to see what that would do. I did however made a restore point in case doing this was not the problem. Uninstalling didn't seem to be the cause of my non working dvds so I did system restore to get back the nero program but it doesn't come back fully all I get is the nero box with 'welcome to nero' and then that changes to favorites and I get no further no matter what I do.
Can any body help me resolve this problem. I've system restored quite a few times now but with no effect. I look forward to any help
regards Michael

  • Hi Michael-

I'm assuming you don't have the installation files.

Take a look at this thread-

  • Hi
    Thanks Wither 1.
I had a look. So if I pay for the update will that re-instate my nero 7.. To be honest I don't know if I have the installation files or not.. I have a nero disc but because the dvd players don't work I can't load it.
I know I should post a new topic but could I throw this other problem by you? Would the nero program be effecting the function of my DVD players ( I've been having problems for sometime and I even added another dvd player to try and sort the problem out which worked for a while but has returned) - when nero was working I put discs in and they just wouldn't boot up or the nero program would start transferring files and then say failed to download or even say put dvd in. I will be putting this to the forum but if you have any ideas I would welcome them
    all the best Michael

  • If you buy the download and have a v7 serial number, you should be able to install v7 using that serial number. The other person seemed to have a problem with it.

It sounds to me like there's a problem with your optical drives. Have you looked in the Device Manager and checked to see if there's a yellow exclamation point next to any of them.

Can you burn to them using any other program?

    What's your operating system?

  • I don't know where you went to get that serial number but it doesn't look right- it seems too long. Also, please delete it from your post (keep a copy of it written down somewhere).

If you didn't reinstall your operating system, the serial number should be in the registry.

    Run regedit.exe.

Go here (I hope you have this path in XP)-

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Nero\Shared\NL11

The serial number should be there. Don't post it here.

I don't think Nero has anything to do with your drive problems.

I assume that you have XP SP3 and it's up to date.

Go to Control Panel, AutoPlay. What is the action for a blank DVD and blank CD?

Let's work with the latest drive you installed. Do you have the latest firmware (not driver) for that drive?

  • Hi Wither 1
    Thanks for your patience.
I got the serial number from the nero on line help using their Nero serial finder. I will try to add a few images.
I tried the regedit but couldn't find 'Wow6432node in SOFTWARE only a nero path which didn,t show any number.
I'm using windows xp service pack 3 and it was up to date till I suppose April 8th when microsoft stopped supporting although I was having problems before this date and it was only till very recently that after trying to write to dvd that I got impatient and un-installed nero to see what would happen.
I've tried a few different ways to open the dvd but it just says either 'access is denied' or 'please insert a disc into drive'. That was using the added dvd player, which I have to tell you came out of my old computer but was fine to begin. I doubt if it's firmware is up to date.
I will try to add these images of the process of finding the serial number and what I got with regedit.

Not sure what's going on here and whether you can access these, I just pressed on 'add image' and got this. Again thanks for your help.

  • My mistake. :( Syswow64 is used on 64 bit systems.

My serial number for v8 is only 28 characters, not counting the hyphens. The serial numbers for v9 through v14 are 32 characters, not counting the hyphens.

If you search on 4C85 in the registry, does it show up?

You didn't answer my question about AutoPlay.

  • Hi wither 1
I'm not sure what you mean when you say search on 4C85 in the registry but I did my best. I looked in the registry editor but could get nothing more than what the image nero 4 shows you. So I put C485 into search on the start menu and found this - image 5- (below). The folder shown is empty. Then I went to my computer and looked in the program files and found this - image 6-. If this is any use to you I don't know.
As for Autoplay, I couldn't find it in the control panel and opted for just trying out a few things all of which failed, access denied etc. How do I find Autoplay?
    Here are the images

You will have to forgive me, my knowledge of computers isn't brilliant and thanks again for your patience

  • What I wanted you to do is to run regedit.exe; click on Computer; and hit Control F (Find). Put in 4C85 and then search data and values.

You'll have to excuse me because I never had XP.

Here's what I see in Control Panel in Vista using Classic View.

  • Hi Michael,

First, please note I have removed your posting with your serial number. Serial numbers are personal and shouldn ́t be posted in the Forum.

The serial number was correct, but corresponds to a very limited version of Nero 7. Maybe you used to have a different Nero 7 version before? With this OEM version, you won ́t be able to playback Videos DVDs using Nero 7. This is a license restriction. I saw your screenshots, and you are aparently being suggested to upgrade your version. This is also due to this license restriction.

Nero 7 is a very old and discontinued version of Nero. We stongly recommend you to upgrade your Nero version to the current Nero 2014 version, instead of purchasing the Nero 7 Update disc. The Update disc will only contain the installation file, and won ́t solve the problem. Moreover, we no longer offer support for Nero 9 and older versions, such as Nero 7.

    Best regards,
    NeroUser

  • Hi Wither 1
Sorry I haven't got back to you and I owe you an explanation. After those 5 days I had to go into hospital but just before that my computer completly crashed, all I could get was this blue warning screen even when I tried safe mode so it was a case of getting it repaired. So with the hospital everything got delayed. When I did get it repaired I decided to convert the OS to linux, which frankly I am struggling with and am seriously thinking of converting back to XP. So as it stands I have no Nero, lets say, to worry about so my problems are over as far as that is concerned, however, I would like to thank you for all your support and patience.
Please let me know if you got this email otherwise I will send it again.
    kindest regards Michael

  • Thanks for the explanation. Very nice of you to do that and I hope you are now well.

As for your computer, that's a different matter. Personally, I wouldn't reinstall XP since Microsoft officially stopped providing security updates in April. On the other hand, you might want to reinstall it since, if you can find a copy of Win 7, it won't be cheap. I don't know if your system would meet the specifications for Win 8. With Win 7 and Win 8, your only choice is Nero 2014 since none of the older versions that are compatible with either Win 7 or Win 8 are no longer for sale.

If you stuck with XP and Nero 7, our previous comments would apply. Of course, NeroUser has pointed out the limitations of your license so that's also a factor.

  • heh there wither 1
Thanks for replying and I'm ok and thanks for asking.
Don't worry, I'm thinking of getting a second cheap computer and installing it with linux specifically for bank, ebay etc as I feel it will be safer but I find linux very complicated and I am no computer expert so I will stick to xp as I know it somewhat and save everything on to an external hard drive so I hope I don't loose to much if it crashes again. Actually when it did crash I'd already saved most of my stuff so it wasn't devastating.
    Anyway thanks for replying again.

  • I was thinking about it because everyone is making a big deal out of abandoning XP. If XP has the ability to schedule System Restore points, I would set it up to do it on a schedule that you're comfortable with in regards to how much you're willing to lose if someone did hack XP on your system. You could create one manually if you can't schedule it. It sounds like you already have a backup plan.

I don't save my personal files on my C:\ partition and I do a daily update type backup of those files with Backitup 12 to another drive. I image my C:\ about once a month with Macrium Reflect. This is in Vista which I have set up to create a System Restore point once a week. I'll still use Vista even when they quit providing the security updates. I like it a lot better than Win 7.
