I’m frustrated and wasting time

CD Text? No way.

Nero Burning Rom 10 did not write CD Text to my drive even though Nero 10 reported that my burner supported CD Text. I tried every combination I could think of. No dice. So I upgraded to Nero 14. Same result, no CD Text. So I tried using a different machine. No difference. I am hard pressed to see why I should continue with Nero, unless of course someone can help.

  • What is the model of your optical drive?

What type of disc are you burning in Burning Rom? Are you selecting the check box to write CD-Text on the disc. Please provide details in this regard.

  • The drive is a serial ATA LG Super Multi identified in Burning Rom as HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24NS90.

I tried two different discs. Both are 800MB CD-R discs, one from Maxell and the other from Fuji.

By all means I selected the relevant check box.

I could not get this to work with either a cue file or discrete WAV files. The cue file was generated by Total Recorder V. 8.5, their latest version. The desired text was found on the WAV files when observing the properties of each file from within Burning Rom.

The machine is an AMD Athlon dual core. The OS is Win7 64 bit.

  • Well, I'm hugely embarrassed! I tried out the CDs in my wife's Subaru and didn't see any text. As it happens, the player in her car _does not_ support CD Text. So I tried the ten disc player in my 1987 Volvo (360,000 miles) and behold the CD Text _was_ there.

So I put one of the discs in my MacBook, and ran the command 'drutil cdtext' in terminal, and an XML file with the CD Text was displayed.

All of the discs I burned did indeed contain CD Text. In my initial post I put up a smiley and said I was wasting time. It turns out that I was wasting the time of all of you on this forum! For that, my deepest apologies.

So as not to completely waste the effort, can anyone point me to a PC or MAC player that shows CD Text?

    Thanks, and again my apologies.

  • Have you tried Nero MediaHome, which you already have?

  • I don't know what you mean "which you already have." Nonetheless, I looked for MediaHome and it is free, but I don't see how it would help.

There is a plug-in for WMP that purports to display CD Text. I installed it but it displayed only the first few entries. After that, even if I clicked on "show CD Text" it simply didn't.

AIMP is a freeware player that is supposed to show CD Text, but it did no such thing.

Winamp is no longer supported, and attempts to download it from download.com elicited warnings from my anti-virus SW.

I'm ready to give up on the whole issue. Now that I know the metadata is there, I am assured that some players, such as the Sony player in my ancient Volvo will show the text. Of course, the CD Text idea was introduced by Sony.

I can always enter the info manually in iTunes, and that will then work when I sync to my iPhone.

Some things that would seem to be straightforward apparently aren't, such as displaying metadata in SW players. Bummer.

  • You mentioned Nero 10 and I assumed you have the Nero MultiMedia Suite 10. If it's up to date, you will have Nero MediaHome.

The plug-in for Windows Media Player seems to be this one-

  • MediaHome was not on my machine.

Visiting bmproductions resulted in copious malware finding it's way to said machine. And the plugin didn't work. Maybe I installed it incorrectly. I found myself dealing with repeated Fake App Attacks, and lpmxp popups. Both were a chore to remove, and I'm not entirely sure I'm in the clear even now.

Right now I'm skittish, so for the time being I'm going to avoid the cd-text-player at freewareapp.com. Perhaps I'm cutting off my nose to spite my face, but that's just how it is.

It's disgusting the way malevolent or just plain greedy people inhabit this planet. But that's the system under which we operate. Maybe I should have been content with Track 1, Track 2, etc.. Oh, well, back to my fragile 1960s Otis Redding tapes.

  • Just to clear things up- It sounds like you have the standalone Nero Burning Rom 10. You said you bought Nero 14. Did you buy the suite or a standalone app?

I'll have to try those downloads.

  • Whether to buy the suite, depends on what things you want to do with video and audio. If all you want to do is burn audio cds, then I see no reason to buy the suite.

Note that Nero 2015 will be issued in 3 weeks. They were practically giving away Nero 2014 Platinum over the weekend. I suspect that more of these offers will come along before Nero 2015 is released.
