CD-Text changed in Nero 14?

I noticed in the Version Comparison chart that a feature is shown as available in Nero 2014 that is not available in Nero 2012, "CD-Text support when copying Audio CDs." I thought that CD-Text has been supported for some time. Am I missing something in the way this is phrased, or is there a feature that I don't understand? What does Nero 2014 offer in the way of CD-Text that Nero 12 does not?

There's no difference between v14 and any other version, in regards to CD-Text. If your optical drive supports it, then you can use CD-Text.

  • Thank you for the responses, and for the image of the version comparison page. It was that page that caused me concern that perhaps the CDs I've been making over the years with version 12 and earlier have some shortcoming in CD-Text that I hadn't discovered, and that the data would be missing when I used a track in another compilation.

I hope they will correct the table, or let us know what aspect they consider to be new functionality.

  • As I understand it, you are able to copy a CD with CD-Text in v12?

  • I have assumed I have CD-Text capability, but I don't know sure how I can prove that.

Here's what seems to me to be evidence that there is CD-Text:

Metadata always seems to be contained in the audio tracks that I burn with Nero. For example, the label maker has the full data in order to create a contents list of audio tracks, regardless of the name of each audio file

If I use a utility to rename MP3 files, it has the data that it needs to convert the name to artist-track-track number-album, etc.

The last version of Nero that I owned that had the Audio Database (which I miss greatly) was Nero 6, and I assumed it was CD-Text that allowed it to create the data that went into that database.

Whoever contributed information to Wikipedia for CD-Text indicates Nero has the capability:
"Nero Burning ROM can burn CD-Text since version 5.5.10; its track saving utility can read CD-Text when ripping."
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-Text

At one time, I would look for burner drives that included the feature in their specifications. I expect it's included in all burners now, but I'm not sure.

It's odd that the feature comparison page includes "when copying Audio CDs" as part of their description. I've never seen anything to suggest that CD-Text has behaved any differently when copying CDs than it does when creating new ones.

Is there something I might be missing that would tell me that I do not have a CD-Text capability that they're suggesting is a new feature? The question of why this is considered a new feature in Nero 14 needs elaboration or an explanation from the developers or marketing, if it's possible to get that.

  • The distinction here is that we're talking about copying a disc to another disc vice a compilation burn option. As far as I know, when you copy a disc to another disc, it's an exact copy.

If you created a compilation to burn, not copy, and got the metadata from Gracenote and used CD-text, when you tried to burn, it would not work if your burner doesn't support CD-Text.

I suggest sending an e-mail to tech support at techsupport@nero.com. Please let us know their response.

  • I sent email to tech support the day of your last post (9 June). No response as of today (13 June). I don't know what their turnaround time is, but it's my guess that there will be no response.

  • It generally takes 3-5 business days to get a response from tech support so you may get a response next week.

Check your e-mail spam folder to make sure there's no response accidently placed there. This assumes the spam controls are not set to automatically delete what it thinks is spam.

Did you ever get an automated response?

  • No to both, and I was surprised not to get an automated response.

I've now resent the email question using the email address I've used on the forum. There was no immediate automated response, but there may be a normal delay. I also entered the question on the online support form I've used in the past for technical problems. I'll see if either works.

  • For some reason, it seems the e-mail address to use is what is used in the forum. I think you'll get a technical response now. They can be slow sometimes but this one went on too long.

Some time ago, the receipt of automated responses became erratic. I think I've been getting them in response to e-mails I have recently sent them.

  • I did get a response today to my question as submitted via the online form (no automated response to the email submission).

I thought the response was inadequate. It essentially repeated the sales site text, to the effect that previous Nero versions support CD-Text, but not when copying Audio CDs. I've responded to request some evidence of this, and to know what I could I observe as a difference in an audio CD copied with Nero 12 and the same one copied with Nero 2014. I'm still skeptical.

  • I'm glad you finally got a response, even if it's not what you want to hear. You can try creating an audio CD with CD-Text and trying to copy it. I don't have the time to do it right now.

  • Thanks, Wither. I got a very rapid response to my reply to the Nero message. The response came from different Nero representative. This time it WAS what I wanted and expected to hear.

"CD-Text feature is the same in Nero 12 and new Nero 2014. CD TEXT can only be written in 'Disc-At-Once' mode or 'DAO/96' mode.
"Make sure your recorder does support CD TEXT...."
    .... ....
"Some hardware/software players do not support CD TEXT, such as Windows Media Player. Please choose a player that definitely supports CD TEXT, such as our Nero ShowTime."

I'm a bit confused by the reference to "Nero ShowTime," since I think Nero abandoned it, to my regret, some years ago. I shouldn't complain, since I have my answer that confirmed what I originally thought on CD-Text, but can't resist after being reminded painfully of my complaints about Nero abandoning so many perfectly functional features for no apparent reason.

Thank you for your patience here in the forum.

  • It may sound like the answer you want but, the problem I see with their answer is it doesn't address copying discs. I think their answer refers to burning compilations since they mention DAO. That's not an option for copying. It may use DAO by default during a copy operation but I'm not sure. In my mind, the best you can do is try it.

I don't know why they mentioned ShowTime. Maybe just a freudian slip.

  • I copied an audio disc in Nero 12, using a compilation I had made from different sources.

These are choices I used in the Nero Burning ROM copy dialogues:
    Read Options tab:
    Profile selection: Audio CD

    Audio Tracks, checked:
    Ignore read errors
    Read indexes of audio data
    Read all subchannel data

    Burn tab:
    Write method: Disc At Once/96

I could see no difference in the resulting copy from the original. When I used the copy to start a new compilation in Nero Burning ROM. Track titles appeared when I dragged tracks to the selection window. I chose 3 tracks as a sampling. When I used those 3 tracks to display a sample disc cover, artist and title data were available for all, as was the unique title I had given to my original compilation.

By my understanding, this is CD-Text, and it carried over in a copy. Is there something I'm missing?

  • Sounds right to me. When you play a disc containing CD text on a player that supports CD text, it should show, at a minimum the track title. As I said 18 days ago, a copy operation is supposed to be an exact copy of the original.
