I’m VERY VERY MAD

Chapter menus are not the same as title menu template - AND

Nero Video is good, but it also REALLY SUCKS, always has.

Number One REALLY huge screw up is - I pick a text template with title and chapter menus, then click advanced editing and all the chapters sub menus are created with animated thumbnails

I REALLY HATE THAT

Another is the limitation of the number of chapters per chapters menus

Another is being really REALLY difficult to design one's own menu template

  • I don't have time to look at the options but I don't think you should get an animated menu unless you choose it. I'll have to do a review tomorrow.

You can add many buttons to a menu page. After creating a chapter menu, click on advanced editing. Click on a button and right click. Select Duplicate. You can then drag the duplicated button wherever you want it. You will have to link each button to the appropriate chapter. Of course, you will have to reduce the size of the buttons, depending on how many you add to the page.

I don't know what "really difficult" means. Is there a particular problem?

  • Thank you for responding :-)

Yes, I have often created my own buttons to get more buttons per menu, but, this is very difficult to do with this animation thumbnails problem that I should not be getting at all but that I'm getting all the time now.

I used to sometimes be able to choose text templates and get chapters sub-menus also in text form, no animation thumbnails, sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, but now it is not working at all.

Plus, for most templates that show 5, or a couple that show 6 animation or text buttons per sub-menu, now I almost always get just 3 animation thumbnails per menu, except for 'Vacation' and 'Orbit'.

The very difficult part is that my Nero Video always defaults to begin with the 'Orbit' template, which I suspect seems to be causing the problem I'm having. I think NV is auto-assigning animation thumbnails to all my chapters sub-menus before I can choose a text only template and then I can never get rid of the chapters sub-menus animation thumbnails.

  • Nero Video uses three different types of menu styles: Standard 2D, Animated 2D and Smart 3D. Standard and Animated 2D provide templates with 3 or 4 menu buttons for titles or chapters per page, Smart 3D in most cases provides 6 buttons. If you want to create menus with more buttons this is not so difficult to do via Advanced Editing within the 'customize' tab.

    A. Before going into that here is a quick way of how to create a static button - show the linked video as a graphics only (no animation): Just click the customize tab (you don't even need to activate advanced editing), select the menu button in question, and go to 'Appearance' > 'Display' > 'Display Picture'. Underneath you will find an 'Options' button. Click on that and the 'Select Poster Frame' window will open which allows you to set the wanted image representing your video sequence as an image on the menu screen button. When you do that for all buttons and click next you won't see the entry 'Animated Menus' and the Pre-Render button on the next screen (Preview). In order to make your disc menu more vivid you could also do a mix of static butons and animated buttons. Just check it out.

    B. If you want to create more direct menu access points for your titles on one screen, proceed this way: Select a menu template. I used Standard 2D 'Memories' to create 6 buttons on one menu page to link to 6 video titles of my cats directly. Select one of the intial buttons that come with the template. In order to have more space and less overlaying button fields clean if from text and figures via the provided options in text editing > text only > delete all text. Then you duplicate as many buttons as needed/meaningful and arrange it on the screen. Go to the 'Content' button in the lower part of the screen and link your title to the menu button representation just by drag and drop. Now decide about animated or non animated buttons (see A). Before going to the next step 'Preview', click on the button 'Disc/Project' and then'Check Project'. There are cases when buttons are overlaying others or when a navigation link is not set correcty. In most cases slightly overlaying buttons is not a major problem but navigation links must work. Just try it out in the preview screen via 'next', and initially ignore the warning screen that might pop up. You can always go back to the editing sceen to re-arrange your buttons or modify naviagtion links.

Creating individual disc menus is similar to creating an image built of different layers with a photo editing software, plus the related navigation links. As always, creative things that are more than one click away need some time for trial and error. So try it out it's worth the time spent.

  • I just opened a video project. When I went to the Menu Editing screen, Orbit was the default and the Category type is Standard 2D. The buttons weren't animated. If I went to Advanced Editing, nothing changed whether or not I added a text button. I then went to the next screen and the buttons weren't animated during playback. If I rendered the project first, NV added animation to the buttons.

Note that you can go to Customize and set the duration of animation.

  • In order to see a real preview of the button animations you need to click 'Pre-rendering'.

The preview window itself does not show the animated buttons.
When you burn to disc and play the disc you will see the animated buttons.

You can say it is poor implementation that a preview wouldn’t show what the real thing looks like, but I guess it's due to performance when playing up to 6 clips in parallel that the preview has this function disabled and you need to do an extra rendering to see the animations.

There is room for improvement here, I guess.
Also the template 'Orbit' coming by default should be replaced by remembering the user’s last choice when having selected a template before.

Anyway, I guess people can live with this for now, knowing about the background.

  • As I said, when I rendered the project, it added the animation. Since I started out with Standard 2D, I assumed that, if I didn't render it, the burned project wouldn't have animation.

The default animation time was :38000 in the Menu Editing screen, Customize. As I mentioned, one could adjust that. Just "0" it. However, when I do that and render the menu, it still shows a momentary animation. This is the first time in almost 6 years that anyone has mentioned this. I'm thinking that DotCa should send tech support an e-mail about this.

I didn't try this in v12 or earlier.

Thanks Wither 1 and Video Doc for trying to help, but, neither of you is understanding my problem.

If adding a couple of screen captures to this post works,

In the first, you should see the thumbnail for the 'Orange Rings' template circled in yellow, clearly showing 6 text chapter links, and you should see that the main title menu displayed shows a text link to the imported video file, - text - as it should be.

All links to all chapters on all subsequent sub-menus should also be created as text links.

But, you should also clearly see that the chapter sub-menus displaying to the right of the main title menu are all animation thumbnails, and only 3 per menu.

In the 2nd screen capture you should see the first chapter sub-menu clearly showing that the buttons are animation thumbnails and there are only 3 of them.

    This should not be happening.

  • First, there is something clearly wrong with the Orange Rings template since it's not displaying properly for you or me.

Second, select Customize. Under Project Settings, do you have the box "never use black thumbnails" checked?

Third, are you changing the name of the chapters? I'm wondering because it's showing Movie 1, Movie 2, etc.

  • The Slide Show Menu is the only template I can find that uses text only for chapters. The background can be changed to whatever.

  • Huh, eh.

I'll be darned. So, I'm not the only one this is happening to, that's significant.

    Thanks.

In previous versions there used to be about 1/2 dozen or so templates that would create text only submenus.

Glad to know there's still one left that works

    thanks again

  • You've got me completely baffled. We've gone from a problem with animated menus to a mention of chapter menus that have text only. You didn't even respond directly to my comments in my last post. In effect, I don't know what the real problem is.
    • My apologies Wither 1, I assumed you at least could comprehend when I said, "thanks for the initial attempts to help, but, you are not at all comprehending my problem."

And, apparently, after my further posts to my thread asking for help including screen captures to more fully explain my problem, that is still the case, you still do not comprehend my problem.

      So, meaning,

you can give up trying to help me.

      but, thanks for trying.

      As I already did say.
