compatibility: cannot open nero video file

Hi,

Please help me with this compatibility problem, which prevents me from using Nero. It also makes me very nervous about future upgrade.

I have 2 desktops running Windows 10 and Nero 2018. Repeat: all 3 running Nero 2018.

I create a project on desktop A.  I need to move the project to desktop B. When doing so, I get the message:

Error opening:
“F:\Project\Project7\...\Output\Project7.nvc”: The project has been created with a newer version of this program. To open the project, please update to the latest version”

Now, as I wrote all 2 PCs run Nero 2018. I check ‘About Nero Video’, I see one has version 19.0.27000. The other has the version 19.1.3016. Surely, they are not the same number. But they are Nero 2018. I cannot upgrade 2018 to 2018.

At one time, I did upgrade from Nero 2017 to 2018. Now they are all at 2018 and I still have the problem. I search Nero Knowhow for ‘compatibility’ and found no solution.

  • Hello Thanh-Tinh-

First question- Do you have a separate purchased serial number for each of the three installations? You can only use a serial number on one computer and be able to activate the patents.

The actual version of a Nero suite is determined by running Burning Rom and then, selecting Cancel, (in this case) KnowHow and About Burning Rom. It should be 19.1.2002.

  • Answer to first question: Yes, I have one license for each PC. Initially, I got the license and installed it on one PC. After using it for some months, I liked it and I save money to buy another license for the second PC.

Yes, I go to "About Nero Video" to get the version number. Note that the problem I have is with Nero Video. The version numbers are 19.0.27000 and 19.1.3016. Both licenses are Nero 2018.

I want to be able to port my project between PCs. If my wife kicks me out of the primary PC, I can move to the second PC, until she frees the primary PC. How can I achieve this goal? Can I take the software with the higher version number and reinstall it on the other PC (using separate license number)? Should I uninstalled it first?

I hope Technical Support can give me the advise. Please.

  • To answer your primary question, a project file (.nvc) does not contain the files in your project. It contains references to the paths of those files. As a result, you would need to have those files on both computers in the same paths. If you don't want to set that up, then you would need to export your project to file and transfer that file between computers. I know, that's time consuming.

For the computer with the lower Nero Video version number, open Nero Content. Run the check for updates from the Nero ControlCenter.

Note that I'm not tech support. I'm just a volunteer who's been in here for almost 11 years. They don't participate, except on occasion, in the forum.

  • I am aware that a project file (.nvc) doe not contain only references to the paths of the files. I do port everything. The error message says that it cannot read .nvc files of higher version.

Is this forum the right way to ask Technical Support. If not, does anybody know what is the right way to ask Technical Support? Thanks.

  • Thanks

Yes, I have run check update on Nero Control Center on both PCs. No new updates available. The versions still differ, although they are both Nero Video 2018.

I have sent an email to feedback@nero.com with all serial numbers on both PC 2 days ago. I am still waiting.

  • Thanks.

The link you provide is EXACTLY THE SAME VERSION I got when I first bought. The name of this software is Nero_Platinum2018-19.0.10200. After installing and running update from Nero ControlCenter, it gave me the version 19.0.27000, which is lower than on the other PC. I still have all install software and email. Since it is the same software that I initially installed when I bought, I do not see the reason to reinstall.

The install software on the other PC is: nero2018-ESD_small-20171123081733772-19.0.08300.nsx.exe. After install and run update it shows version 19.1.3016, which is higher. Since this purchase is a special offer with some other software (more than just Nero Platinum 2018), I do not want to take it and install on the other PC, unless and until Technical Support tells me it is safe and legal.

  • Thanh-Tinh-

The v19.1.3016 is what I have and is the reason I asked to try the updates. I don't see an issue in installing it on the first computer.

However, did you install the Content Packs?

  • Hi Wither,

I port from 19.1.3016 to the PC that run 19.0.27000, where I run into the problem.

Yes, I did install Content Packs on all PCs.

I receive an email from feedback@nero.com this AM, asking me to check a few things, including to check Nero Update and BITS services run. They all run as expected. I have provided the screenshots to them. Hopefully they can find a solution.

    Thanks for your follow up.

  • Earlier I asked you to check the version of Burning Rom. Is it as I mentioned?

Irregardless of the error message, the things I mentioned regarding the .nvc still apply. I got thinking about how to make it work on both systems without having to put your files in the same location on the second system. Since you have Win 10, you probably have OneDrive. I thought if you put the files you're going to use in a project on OneDrive, then the path would be accessible to both computers. You might also be able to do it by "sharing" files on both systems. Just something to think about.

  • I agree that the version has something to do with it. That's why I asked him to update. Of course, it has failed for him.

However, he's trying to open the .nvc on a second computer. That's not going to work without either getting the original files in the project either on the second computer or perhaps using one of those things I threw out there.

  • As Omega Tester wrote, the issue is how to get update Nero Video. Unable to get update is the cause, unable to open the .nvc is the affect.

Porting files from one PC to another is easy. I just copy the whole project onto a memory sticker and bring them over the other PC.

I am in contact with Technical Support. Some progress has been made. But the issue has not been closed. Once it is solved, I can share with the community how they resolve the problem.

  • I understand. I was trying to address both issues and missed your statement earlier- "I do port everything.".
