Delete old BackItUp backup files

Greeting Nero Guru's

I have old Nero Backitup 2 backup files (from 9/2010) on an external hard drive that I would like to delete. The external backup hard drive is near full and I need to recover the space. I still have Nero Backitup 2 installed have no problems running the software on my HP laptop running Win XP, SP3 and all WIN updates.

When I open Nero Backitup 2, select/display the HOME window option, then Right click on the backup file(s) I wish to delete, selecting both:
1) Remove backup reference from BackItUp, and,
2) Delete current backup files from hard disk (The backup files ....etc)

options in the 1st popup window, and click "Yes", I am presented with a 2nd popup window with the question and warning:
"Do you also want to delete all files related to this backup?
Warning: all backup files will be permanently lost!"

So my question is will this action be deleting only the backup files created, or all "the original source" files related to the backup ?

This 2nd popup window and wording of the question & warning caused enough consternation to cancel the delete request, thinking that it would extend the delete action to include all the original source files as well as the backup files. Maybe I'm just being paranoid ...

Please advise.

  • Well, I'm not a guru.

I don't think it will delete the original files if you still have them. But just to be sure, you could ask tech support.

However, there's no reason why you can't use WE to delete the files.

  • Hey Wither 1,

Thanks for the reply... It wouldn't make sense to delete original source files (in this case music, photos, documents and such) as well as the backup files ... much of which is duplicated in other subsequent backups ... and, I figured I could delete them using WE as well ... but thought using BackItUp would also clean up any markers or other 'book keeping' tags somewhere.

Anyway, since it was late, at the end of a long day ... just didn't want to chance it.

    Thanks Again

The files I was referring to are the backup files, not the originals. Sorry I wasn't more specific.

In other words, you should be able to delete the .nba and .nco files with Windows Explorer. I'm assuming that's what they are given the age of your copy of Backitup.

  • Greetings Wither 1,

I correctly understood you to mean only the .nba and .nco backup files in your first reply, so we're good there.

Since I'm running down level SW, I just needed some confirmation that my late night 'thought' was incorrect... I was being overly concerned...

    Thanks for your replies.

  • Hey Wither 1 ... Currently I'm on my iPhone and can't do anything ... Sorry, a little humor intended... But ultimately (being an 'old school' hardware engineer and software developer) I'll likely use BackItUp to delete the backup files on the external hard drive... to ensure at least in my mind a clean removal

Since this laptop is nearing EOL along with the resident SW, then perform a full backup to ensure future access to (legacy and latest) data files, when new hardware becomes necessary. I feel this might be sooner rather than later with the recent advances in technology and consumer products...

I'll post again when the operation is complete to confirm the execution does as expected. Thanks again for helping resolve my consternation.

  • I don't know how old Backitup 2 is. Nero Inc. vice Nero AG has been issuing software with various Nero names that aren't shown at the Nero.com website.

If this is a really old version which may have been included in Nero 7 or earlier, then it won't be compatible with the newer operating systems and the newer versions of Backitup won't be able to restore the backups. As a result, I don't recommend using Backitup 2 to make a full backup. On the other hand, a good zip program can be used to open .nba files.

I suggest downloading the free Backitup 2014 to do your backup. Make sure it has a restore option (I don't have it installed to verify this).
