I’m frustrated

DRM difficulty

When trying to import into Nero Video a program recorded from TV, I'm suddenly getting a response: "...is under DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection and cannot be played." I can play the video on Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, Power Media Player & Nero MediaHome 2018. This Nero Video problem has occurred after downloading Windows10 updates; maybe coincidental or not. I've uninstalled & reinstalled Nero but that has not resolved the problem. I've owned Nero 10, 12, 14 & 16 and have never had this problem before. 18 has been working fine for the couple months I've owned it 'til this sudden difficulty.
Your assistance would be appreciated. Thanks, JB

  • Nero MediaHome, like the other programs, will play copy protected video except for Blu-ray and AVCHD-DVD (since v2016). However, you can't copy or edit copy protected video in any of the Nero apps. That has been the case in all versions.

  • Hi Berks, maybe you could share a small sample file here (Link to Dropbox, OneDrive, Goggle Drive, etc.)?

  • Here's the link to Google Drive where I've uploaded one of the videos I'm having the problem with and the error message Nero gives me. I just tried to generate a DVD of the same video on a Windows 7 PC w/ Nero 14 and had NO problem at all. This Windows 10 laptop shows all the videos I'm having problems with as UNprotected, see screenprint on Drive. The problem is specific to Nero 18. I've generated a DVD of Unforgotten on this w10 laptop w/ Freemake, no problem.

  • Berks,

I suppose it's just another example that demonstrates a lack of regression testing at Nero. Note that the file can be imported into Nero Recode, but the program freezes while recoding and has to be stopped via Task Manager!

You could use the free XMedia Recode program to quickly convert your file to MPEG-2 format. Open the file; select it; on the Format tab, choose MPEG-2 format; on the Video tab, choose the "Copy" mode; on the Audio tab, choose the "Copy". Here are some screenshots:

Finally, click "Add to queue" at the top followed by "Encode".

  • I downloaded your file and was unable to open it in v10, v12, v14 and v2015. Perhaps I got a bad download. Nero MediaHome wouldn't play it but says it is X-WTV. The only reference to that I could find is XTV which was used in Roku but was abandoned because of potential copy protection issues. There was a problem with .wtv in some Nero versions but I think that was fixed well before v2018. I have v10 through v2018 on my other system. I'll have to try the file on that system tomorrow.

I know what I said earlier about copy protection but didn't elaborate on the fact that the detection of copy protection varies widely with not only the Nero version but the different apps within a particular version. Whether or not copy protection is detected may also depend on whether the latest AACS keys are installed in the operating system or disc drive firmware.

  • What I still don't understand is why the video was fine a few days ago and suddenly is labeled as protected. I'd actually set up Unforgotten to record to DVD and it was good to go but I waited for another TV program to record before doing the Nero DVD recording. When I was ready to do that a few days later, the problem occurred on a video that had previously been acceptable.

  • Berks,

WTV files have been a problem. See topic Recode 2018 does not convert video in some .WTV files. If you search in that topic for "A link to the 11 MB .wtv 'Vampire Diaries' video mentioned above by Wither 1:", you will find a link to a small WTV that illustrates the issue. I don't remember the DRM being mentioned.

  • Berks,

I tried making a DVD from the XMedia Recode MPEG-2 output. Nero Video froze while transcoding. I imported the video again and tried playing it in Nero Video's Video Edit screen - the video froze at about 01:34:00:00. So, I redid the XMedia Recode doing an actual recode instead of a "Copy" operation. That worked but took ~30 minutes instead of ~1 minute.

  • I downloaded the file on my Win 7 system and I believe the download is larger (6.63 GB) than when I downloaded it on my Vista system (6.3x GB, I think). I'll have to check it tomorrow.

However, I imported it into Nero Video Advanced editing in v12, 14, 2016 and 2018. In the last 3 versions, it imported without any messages and it played for at least 4 minutes in each one. I jumped around in it and it played everywhere. The change thing is that, when I tried to play it in the latest version of Nero MediaHome, it initially rendered the thumbnail but then, that went away, but the file wouldn't play.

In v12, I could import it into Nero Video without any messages but, it wouldn't play.

I should mention that I tried all of the above without my graphics card enabled. When I imported it into Nero Vision in v10, it imported but wouldn't play because it said I needed to have my graphics card enabled.

  • Berks,

First, my system has the Spring Creators Update:

    href="https://d2r1vs3d9006ap.cloudfront.net...">

Your file plays through in Windows Media Player, Daum PotPlayer, ffplay, and other players with the exception of Nero MediaHome where it freezes at this scene:

If I open it in Nero Video from Nero MediaHome, I get the following errors.

    From the Burn screen:

Choosing to edit in Nero Video from Nero MediaHome:

Importing directly into Nero Video, I get the DRM message:

    Some strangeness?

    The ffprobe output starts with:

    [mpeg2video @ 00000000006a0c80] Invalid frame dimensions 0x0.
    Last message repeated 12 times

Also, all of the above applies to two other .WTV videos I have tried (with the exception of the freezing - the other files are 10 seconds long and ~30 minutes long.)

  • On my Vista system, I get the message shown in your second screenshot for v9 through v2015.

I checked, as I indicated I would above, and the file size is the same as the one I downloaded unto my Win 7 system where I don't have any issues. I think I'll try a new download.

  • Sorry for the large size of the video file but it's what I'm having trouble with. I used Freemake to convert to MP4 and the new MP4 imported to Nero Video just fine.
I appreciate all the time & effort you've all put into this but I'll just have to take the tedious step of converting to MP4 before importing to create a DVD. Btw, Freemake created a dvd from the original WTV file w/ no problem.

  • Hi Berks,

We were not able to reproduce the issue. We tried with two Windows 10 PCs (one among the two had the latest windows updates installed today) and we were able to import, edit and export the shared video with different versions of Nero Video/ Nero Vision. Also, the file played smooth in Nero MediaHome as well.

Could you try restoring your Windows updates and try once again? Seems like issues related to updates.

    Thanks!

  • I have exactly the same version as above w/ 5.16.18 update install.
I've Backed out the Windows update & uninstalled & reinstalled Nero 18 to try to overcome the problem but no joy.
Following is my communication from Nero tech. I give up.

    Customer Support [2018-05-22 13:44:03.890]
    Dear Mr. Berkey,

Thank you for your reply and all the given information.

Please accept our apologies for any inconveniences you might have experienced with Nero products and services.

We would like to mention once again that this issue has to do with the file that you are trying to import and not the software that you use. And unfortunately we cannot assist further since it has to do with the DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with further questions in the future.

    Kind regards,

    Savvas
    Nero Support Team
