DVD Player is missing from "Devices" drop down.

I'm trying to use Nero Recode 12 to convert a video I shot for a family event. My intent is to burn a *.mpg file (greater than 2GB) to a DVD disc so that some other DVD Player can play it. I've been so fxxx frustrated by Nero Recode 12 that no matter what I did, the "DVD Player" option never showed up in the "Devices" drop down list. While in the "option", it is clearly displayed as "available devices". I searched on the internet and the manual and ended with empty hands. Why the fxxx "DVD Player" is missing from the drop down and no explanation was ever provided?

  • You're using the wrong program. You should be using Nero Video.

In order to create a DVD disc that is playable in a standalone DVD player, the video has to be authored (encoded) to the DVD-Video specification/structure. This is done in Nero Video. If you don't need to do any editing or add any effects, etc., open Nero Video and select DVD, DVD-Video under Create and Export. Import your video. If you want to have a Chapters menu, add chapters as desired. Click on Next. You will be in the menu editing screen. If you don't want a menu, select that and Click on Next twice and you will be in the Burn screen. Click on Burn. That's it.

I've described a bare basics way of doing this. If you have any other questions, please post them. Also, note that if you have HD video and you want to burn it to a DVD playable in a blu-ray player (not a DVD player, you can select the AVCHD, DVD option.

  • Mr. Nero avoided the whole issue here! I am using Nero Recode 2014 and it is clearly missing the option for "DVD" output device. Mine was there until the third time I used Recode. Also, look at page 19 of the Recode user manual. There's the DVD option plain as day. Hitting you square in the face! So, Mr. Nero, what is your answer to this problem now? And, do not provide some other alternate, non-related, answer. Stick to the exact topic.

  • Eric Mone:

Mr. Nero is apparently not available at the moment. I think the screenshot on page 19 is contained in a manual section starting on page 16 with, "To recode a DVD-Video, proceed as follows:."

  • Geez- I never thought I'd be called Mr. Nero.

As far as I know, the option for the DVD Player is only available if you import a DVD structure or a DVD. I've attached a screenshot for when a DVD structure is imported.

My original advice still stands. I don't think that Recode 12 can encode a file to the DVD-Video structure.

  • After I posted, I noticed that Eric is not the originator of this thread. Missed it completely, thus my posting the Recode 12 screen. The reason I finally noticed it is because Omega Tester was posting a screenshot from v14.

My advice still stands for v14.

  • For clarification:

Nero Recode can RECODE existing DVD-Structures.
So, if you import a DVD (or a DVD-Structure) in Nero Recode, the DVD-Device is available - and you e.g. deletes some parts/languages of the dvd.

But, what recode cannot do is to CREATE DVD-Structures and menus.

So, if you want to make a Video-DVD from a mpeg-file, you have to use nero video - as nero video is a DVD Authoring application.

    > Also, look at page 19 of the Recode user manual. There's the DVD option plain as day.

Yes, and if you read from beginning of dvd-section, you can find on page 15:
    -------------
    Recoding a DVD-Video to DVD-Video
You can use Nero Recode to copy the main movie of a DVD-Video to a DVD without addi-tional extras or to copy the entire disc including the menu. You always can remove undesired subtitles or audio tracks. You also have the option of adjusting the quality of the DVD-Video in such a way that the data can be burned to a conventional recordable disc with perfect video quality.

To recode a DVD-Video, proceed as follows:
    1. Insert the DVD-Video you want to recode into the disc drive of your PC.
    2. Choose the Import DVD task from the Home window.
 The Import DVD window is opened.
    3. Choose the disc drive with the DVD-Video and click the OK button.
You can also choose a VIDEO_TS folder located on your hard drive using the Import DVD structure task.
    ---------------

Also, look at page 22 (Device Settings):
    --------------------------
The device category DVD Player is only available for recoding DVD-Video.
