From Show Time to No Show Time with Nero?

Hi I moved from XP running nero7 to win 7, and found that I could not run nero7 any more. I tried the update link and followed the advise as to its installation after cleaning etc.
I could still not run the the updated nero7 (I particularly wanted the "Show time" part so tried a version of nero8 that worked great including the "show time" that I badly needed to keep. I used a serial that was provided and was quickly made aware that the serial was pirated and having been given the opportunity to purchase the upgrade to nero2016, I did exactly that.
When the software had been installed I was very disappointed to find that "Show time" no longer existed.
So my question is this: Can I reinstall Nero8 using the key I had purchased for it's updated version to get nero8 back up and running on my Win7 machine.
Thanks.

  • What I suggest is to change the compatibility mode for the installation file to Vista or XP in its properties and then run it as the administrator. You can download the installation file at nero.com, downloads, previous product downloads, older products, Nero 8.

  • Hi Wither, thanks for your advice and suggestions.

I did already try compatibility mode, running as admin, without success and have since found that nero7 can not be made to run fully on win7.
That is why I tried nero8 that did perform very well on win 7 - including the "Showtime" feature I have been so reluctant to loose. I personally do not care much for the way video files are handled by Nero Media Home in Nero 2016.
I also find Win7 far more reliable and easier to use than Win8 or 10.
My main question was that as I already own the serial no for Nero 2016, is it possible to set up Nero 8 using my Nero 2016 serial key.

Hopefully I should be able to do that as Nero 2016 is the updated version of Nero 8.
If you know the answer to this then I could do that without the fear of being reprimanded by Nero. If you do not know the answer then I would just have to try it and see.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Interesting. Some people are running v7 in compatibility mode in Win 10. I don't know if everything works.

You can't use your v2016 serial for v8. v2016 is an "upgrade" to v8, not an "update".

You can probably find a copy of v9 (which is Win 7 compatible with all the updates) somewhere on the web in an unopened box. As you found out with v8, the serial number has to be unused for you to use it.

  • Sorry Wither 1, got your name wrong last time.

So that means that I have just wasted £33 +vat on a discounted upgrade that I assumed was an update to nero8. Described by Nero as "the new Nero 8".

If I was to find version 9 either on Nero's own site or elsewhere, I would then have to purchase yet another serial and would not even know if it contained "Show time".

I am obviously not happy about this and doubt that I could claim back the recent purchase value of the serial for Nero 2016.

Thanks for your assistance on this matter.

  • There are no versions of Nero older than v2016 available for purchase from Nero.

V9 is the last version to contain ShowTime.

You can send an e-mail to techsupport@nero.com and request a refund for v2016. There shouldn't be any issues in this regard.

  • Thanks Wither1.

As V9 contains Show Time this must be the way for me to go.

Forgot to mention, nero7 running in compatibility mode allows Show time to
run video with no control over sound - disc burning is ok on win7 (home Premium)
When not in compatibility mode, sound is controlled but video will not run.
when updated by Nero both the above are reversed.
I greatly appreciate your swift replies and support.

Might even mail Nero's tech support as you suggest..

  • I only found 2 copies of Nero 9 on the web which look like they aren't used. Both are at Amazon.com. However, the cheapest one says open box but never used. The other is priced at $99+ shipping (ridiculous). However, I wouldn't buy either one without confirming with the seller that the copy they're selling has never been installed. Preferably, the version is v9 reloaded.

  • Hi,
Yes, I also found a few, and a couple of downloads that I tried out to see how they shaped up for my needs. Most of the v9's that I looked at were not that impressive. Certainly no better than the HP media already on my win7. But ver 8 does everything I want and then some.
Thanks for taking the trouble to look on my behalf. It was most appreciated.
I did end up sending a mail to Tech support to explain the circumstances and said that if they could not provide me with a key for ver 8 as a swap for ver 2016 then I would respectfully ask them to refund the cost of the key that I purchased as a result of their misleading advertising suggesting that Nero 2016 is the new Nero 8.
I will let you know what happens in due course.
    • If history repeats itself, you won't get a key for v8.

I don't know why you can't install v7 in Win 7 using the options I provided. What kind of errors are you getting when you try to install it? The biggest problems will occur if you're trying to install it from disc since the discs aren't normally up to date. You can download v7 at nero.com, downloads, previous product downloads, Other products, Nero 7.

The biggest difference between ShowTime and Nero MediaHome is that ShowTime has more playback controls. There are some other benefits to v9 and older but most are for a small percentage of users. Overall, later versions have really improved, primarily in Nero Video.

You didn't elaborate on what you don't like about how Nero MediaHome handles videos.

  • Hi,
I did try your suggested method of compatibility install - in fact - several times - with the end result that the program either stops responding or will only allow limited control over certain functions. For example either no control over audio levels or no video play. I used the update that is still readily downloadable from Nero and on several attempts (different compatibility settings etc) could only get the update (v7) to reverse the faults I was getting with the original v7.
What is really annoying is that V8 works like a dream - if only I had a valid key!
I have tried several times to find a genuine Nero 7 download file - without success - even on the Nero site itself. The only download I can find for v7 on Nero's site is an update that I have already tried to get working several times.
I have seen Nero7 exe files on a couple of other sites - but at the moment can't remember where.
I think you were spot on to say that some of the bundled disks only had low versions of show time so I will see if I can download ver7 from one of the other sites.
Interestingly, I have noticed that the two bundled v7's that I have acquired over the years have exactly the same serial keys - I was always under the impression that everybody had a different serial key for their sole use - obviously not. But more to the point I have also noticed that they both have the Windows vista ready stamp. So at the very least my v7 should have run in "Vista compatibility" mode.
I prefer Show Time to Nero Media Home for the wider control over playback and the fact that if I change drives I can pull up video files immediately with Showtime whereas I have to wait a considerable time for Media Home to load and sort the files before I can use them.
I am talking about 5000+ video files on each of several drives attached to my desktop. My Hobby being video manipulation of video files - mainly music mixes & remixes, but also correcting video files from some of the leading recording companies that have sometimes overlooked missed beats - a disaster for video DJ's.
I suppose at nearly 74 I should be starting to take things easy but I just don't want to stop what I have been doing for so many years.
    • The v7 file at nero.com is the best that you're going to find. It contains all the updates that were made and you don't have to install the Content pack separately.

If you have two copies of v7 with the same serial number, then the serial number has been pirated. There's all kinds of serial numbers for Nero products for sale on the web. It's why I was careful about telling you where you could get a supposedly unused v9 at Amazon and recommending that you contact the sellers about if to see if what they were using had been installed at some time. I think that Amazon has controls over their sellers, just like e-bay, so, if you had an issue, you could get your money back.

Another issue is that some of those serial numbers are for Essentials or OEM Essentials versions of Nero.

If you have Nero MediaHome installed, double clicking on a video file in Windows Explorer should immediately open the Nero MediaHome Viewer. No need to wait for Nero MediaHome itself to open.

  • I’m happy
    Hi,
Since our last communication, I have been able to purchase a brand new, sealed and film wrapped box containing the Nero 8 software. This is a Nero Box that has never been opened or installed by anyone.
I took the precaution of taking photographs of the sealed box, still in it's original film wrapping together with each stage of opening this original Nero 8 Box and the final shot of the opened box showing clearly the contents of that box and the reverse of the CD that contains the original serial key of that software.
I have since installed that Nero 8 Software, and can report that I now have a fully functioning version of Nero 8 with an authentic Serial Number, that is now running superbly without any problem on my HP Windows 7 computer.
I took these precautions so that Nero could not, in any way, dispute the validity of either the product or the Serial Key that I am using for that product.
I am very pleased that I now have my favourite CD/DVD burning software available to me on my newest computer.
Now all that remains is for me to get an answer back from Nero support, that is long overdue, in relation to a refund on an upgrade that was not needed. You yourself said some 10 days ago "There shouldn't be any issues in this regard".
Many thanks for the tremendous support you have shown with this problem.

  • I'm glad you were able to find a good box. Out of curiousity, what did it cost you?

In all likelihood, the disc doesn't contain all the updates. If you're happy with the way it's working, then maybe you won't want them. If you do want them, you can go to nero.com, downloads, previous product downloads, older products and download Nero 8 which contains all the updates. You could then try installing it over your existing installation. If that didn't work, you would uninstall v8 using the Nero General Clean Tool (don't use Control Panel). Then, install the updated version.

I was informed a few days ago that the techsupport@nero.com address I gave you earlier is no longer used. Contact is now strictly through the contact form at nero.com, support. I don't know exactly when this change was made so I don't know if they actually got your email. I'll see if I can find out.

    Ping me on this Monday.

  • Hi,
All is working well with my "New Version" of Nero 8. I had fully expected it to be fully functioning and this would appear to be the case.
I have also been given a full refund from Nero and would like to thank you for your valuable help in that area. - Much appreciated.
Unfortunately, I have since got a message to set up patent rights???? and dutifully clicked the button - only to be told by Nero that I have a pirated Serial Number.
This, of course, I utterly dispute.
In particular, as I had already taken the precaution of taking photographs of the sealed box, still in it's original film wrapping together with each stage of opening this original Nero 8 Box and the final shot of the opened box showing clearly the contents of that box and the reverse of the CD that contains the original serial key of that software.
I would like to know how I can register this "authentic" serial key so that I can continue to use this software in peace and not be continually harassed by Nero.
I would now like to know how I can show these pictures to Nero in order that I am not Black Listed by them in the future.
Especially as I have no intention of ceasing the use of this "Paid For" and fully legitimate software.
I have no intention of purchasing any further upgrade, as Nero are yet again suggesting. But if they do decide to blacklist me for no reason then my brief, who has seen the Nero 8 box and contents, that he also believes to be genuine, has suggested that I take Nero to court where he thinks that I might be entitled to a considerable sum in damages.

  • Run regedit.exe.

    Go here-

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Nero\Shared\NL9

Is the original serial number that was pirated still shown there? If so, replace it with the new serial number.

    Also go here-

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{7fd71bbf-d86a-49be-b0ca-870bfda3a0b0}

If the pirated software serial number is shown in the Uninstall value, replace it with the new serial number.

  • Hi,
    Looked at registry.
Your first suggested line - ending\NL9, does not contain any obvious serial keys.
But under Nero line ending\NL11 was a serial11 entry that looks like serial key.

Your second line - Uninstall\{7fd71bbf-d86a-49be-b0ca-870bfda3a0b0} - shows loads of entries similar to {7fd71bbf-d86a-49be-b0ca-870bfda3a0b0}.
Unfortunately, I have no idea what serial key is being referred to as the pirated key.
It is possible that a couple of the different versions of essentials, ver7,8,9 etc have left behind remnants of keys, even though I used the Nero clean tool to uninstall those versions.
That said, I did not see my official serial keys in any of those locations.

If I knew the serial referred to as the pirated key then I could search the registry and remove it?

The refund was an unexpected surprise - So thanks for the help that issue.

Still can not find a way to register my official serial keys for Ver8 or is this considered old software and no longer able to be registered?

  • Hey Pete-

I messed up. you should look for \NL 8. I didn't want to switch to my other drive with v8 installed so I used the v9 example. I'll switch drives in a moment and see if I can do better.

There should be no issue registering the v8 serial number as long as it's never been registered before.

  • Hi,

I tried all your suggestions and eventually ended up with two keys at the following location that you recently specified.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Nero\Installation\Families\Nero 8\Info

One of them was my new Nero 8 and the other one was from the ver8 software that I had tried when I found out that my original Nero7 would not work properly on Win7.
Once warned off by Nero with their nag about pirated keys I immediately deleted the software used to set up & try out V8 on Win7 - The pirated keys went to the bin with the software so I no longer knew what the serial keys were. On retrieving it from the bin just now I made a note of the keys and they were the same as the ones I had just deleted from the registry.

Having now deleted the old key, I hope that this will get rid of the warning nags from Nero AG.

One last thing - You say it should be easy for me to register my serial with Nero AG so could you please direct me to the correct location so that I can forget all this unwanted irritation.

Big thanks, of course, for getting me this far. Especially with the Refund. Has been very much appreciated.

  • Whenever, you try to do a project in Nero Vision, it will ask you to register. All you have to do is fill in the requested information and then click on the register button (I'm going by memory but it will be obvious).

I think you have to install the full blown Backitup software separate from the suite. Nero Express will have a rudimentary form of Backitup. That's the way it is in v9. I have a separate serial number for Backitup. That's why you probably didn't find any Backitup entries.

I'm hoping we got everything straightened out. Let me know if any issues come up.
