Getting Pixels

I have been using Nero 2014 Platinum for quite a while with no problems. I have always used Verbatium BD-R #97457 and everything has been fine. But here lately I have been getting a lot of pix-elation. When I import a mp4 blu-ray file in Nero to burn I preview the movie before I do anything with it and it has pixels. When I just play the file with windows player everything is fine. I have tried it on different computers thinking it might be me video card, but it does the same thing. I use NERO VIDEO in the "EDIT and CONVERT, Create and Export, and pick Blu-ray Disk, Import File, click on the file, then open. From here I click on the play to observe the file and I see a lot of pixels showing up in the movie (mp4) but no pixels if I just play it, without running Nero.

  • Hey Arnie-

Are you getting the pixelation if you burn the file to either your hard drive or a disc?

What is the resolution of the original file?

  • The resolution of the file is 1080p. When it shows pixels when I preview, I will then burn the file at 2x and still get pixels. But when I play or preview the file with windows the picture is perfect no pixels.

  • I have the same problem from time to time and have not found any particular reason why some files pixelate and others don't.

For me, the work-around I perform is to convert the file using Freemake Video Converter into a .mkv file, then import that resulting file into NERO Video and it works fine! The pixelation is removed by that conversion software.

The really weird thing is, if I try to convert the same original .mp4 file using NERO Recode, I still get pixelation. Same file, same Laptop, Different results.

  • I have also tried Nero Recode, and I also get the pixelation. I am going to try what you said and see if I get any resaults, THANKS!

  • You're welcome Arnie. What worked for me may not work for you, plus it is a pain in the rear to have to process a file twice! Hope you have some luck.

  • Have you installed additional codecs, such as K-lite, or have another software similar to nero installed?

  • Actually, if you search on codecs on your C: drive, you should have many more codecs. What I am interested in is the installation of additional codecs. In my experience, Cyberlink and VLC Player codecs don't interfere with Nero. However, it could be that the Freemake Vidoe Converter installs additional codecs. I don't know if uninstalling it would also uninstall the associated codecs.I wouldn't pursue this except that your video is 1080p and, at that resolution and using the blu-ray disc option, there should be no issue with pixelation. If you had low resolution video and forcing it to a higher resolution, then I would expect pixelation.

  • I just fired up Windows Media Player - Help, about - and then - technical information ... which is supposed to list all codecs on the system ... but I'm no expert on codecs.

    :)

The weird thing is that not all 1080p files have the issue and they can be of similar age, size and type yet I get this pixelation in Nero Video (sometimes) but nowhere else.
That is to say: If a file shows pixelation in Nero Video, it will always do that in Nero Video, but not every similar file does that. Once I process a problem file through the other converter, the pixelation is cured.

    Quite a mystery.

  • As I mentioned, you should search on codecs on your C: drive. I don't think that the search in WMP is all inclusive.

To get an expert answer to your question, you should send an e-mail to techsupport@nero.com. If you do, let us know what they have to say.

  • Well I used Freemake Video Converter. Everything seems to be fine. I am going to burn a blu-ray and see, but I think its going to work. Its a pain.....but it works!

I definitely think the codecs thing is the key

  • As I mentioned earlier, the Freemaker Video Converter may install additional codecs which are different than those normally used in Nero. In a backwards way, I suggested you might uninstall it to see what happens. Back about 5 years ago, codecs from Alcohol 120 and Haali splitter interfered with Nero. Ditto for some standalone codec packages such as the aforementioned K-lite. If removing the converter doesn't help, I think my suggestion to contact tech support is the best way to proceed.

    • I did not have Freemake installed prior to the issue.
    • Thanks for that confirmation Arnie. At least we can rule out one area of investigation.

  • Go here-

    C:\Users\"user name"\AppData\Roaming\Nero\Nero 15\Nero Vision

Open the nerovideolog.txt file. Copy it's content here. You may have to post more than once to get the whole thing in.
