How can I edit a dvd I own to remove areas that aren't needed on the DVD. For example commercials or dead areas where nothing is going on.

Using Nero 2017 I want to make a copy of a DVD that has dead areas in it but I want to remove the dead areas. dead areas are just something that isn't needed on the dvd, like commercials or people talking

  • You can use Nero Video and cut out what you like it even has a commercial remover that works really well you just press a button and it removes the ad breaks it basically does that because the ads are always louder so it detects that and removes them and then you can just burn it again to disc simple lol.

  • Nero video has a lot of options when I open it. I'm not sure which to pick and I don't know the process to do this. Is there a walk-through anywhere I can follow? Thank you

On the top, far right hand side of the timeline, is a icon that is called the Movie Detector. Click on the arrow and select Ad Spotter. Don't let it automatically remove any ads it finds. After it runs, you can check for those things that you want to remove. Click on the scissors on the right hand side and hover them over the start of a clip you want to remove on the timeline and then click. Do the same thing for the end. Then, select the Selection tool (white arrow on the right hand side). Hover and right click on the portion you want to cut and select Remove from track and close gap.

That's a quick and dirty description. I can provide more details later today.

  • Awesome response! I see the scissors and Movie Detector in Advanced Movie? I'm assuming this is the section I want.

  • Yes, but the Movie Detector is also in Express Editing.

However, I was in a hurry this morning so I didn't provide some important details. I haven't use the Ad Spotter in probably 9 years.

My comment about not letting it automatically remove any ads was a little misguided. What I meant to say is don't check the Combine box when getting ready to do the check. That's because the Ad Spotter isn't perfect and combining what it finds might end up with you deleting things you want to keep. Also, after clicking on generate, play through or scan through each individual clip for the same reason.

When cutting, it's best to zoom the timeline by moving the scroller at the bottom of the page to the right to be more precise with the start and finish cuts. You can also use the jog wheel underneath the preview screen to move incrementally to find the cut locations.
