How can I emulate a commercial DVD menu structure in Nero Video

When you buy a commercial DVD there are usually 3 (or more) entries in a top level menu.

Play film (plays the whole film)
Scene selection (goes to a sub menu allowing choice of section)
Extras (goes to a sub-menu allowing choice of extra stuff)

I would like to find out how to emulate that with my own DVD.

my starting point is around 30 .m2ts files of which 4 are "extras" and the rest are the film. At the moment I load them all into Nero Video and get 5 pages of menus, 6 files to a page.

Can anyone advise how to emulate the commercial DVD menu structure?

Thanks

Tony

    Tony,

    Outline assuming Nero 2017 Video:

    1. Start a DVD Project
    2. At the Content screen, choose Edit (Make on versions before 2016, I think)
    3. At the Video Edit screen, import the main movie videos, drag to the timeline, and click "Next" to return to the Content Screen.
    4. Choose "Add chapter for each video.
    5. Click in the white space below Title 1 and clcik Edit (Make on versions before 2016, I think).
    6. At the Video Edit screen, import the 6 extra videos, drag to the timeline, and click Next.
    7. Choose "Add chapter for each video.
    8. "Next" to the Menu Edit screen.
    9. Choose a template, Title and Chapter menus, click the Customize tab and then check the Advanced Edit checkbox.
    10. Add a button by right-clicking on an existing button and selecting "Duplicate" and reposition it.
    11. Link the 1st button to the first title (main movie).
    12. Link the "Scenes" button to the first title's chapter menu.
    13. Link the "Extras" button to the chapter menu of title 2.

    That's pretty much it!

  • Thanks for the help, but I must be missing something.

First, I'm using Nero Video 2014 (Version 15.0.27001) so things may be a bit different.

When I get to your step 4, I don't have a "Select Chapter for each video", unless it is hidden somewhere. I do have a check box "Create Chapters Automatically", which I checked.

When I get to step 7, that checkbox is already checked.

Up to Step 11, all is OK, but I don't actually have a chapters menu for Movie 1 or Movie 2. There is just the one menu in the area below the edit menu screen (called main Menu), plus the Nero intro video. My only options for linkage are Main Menu, Movie1, Movie1 Chapter 1, Movie2 and Movie2 Chapter 1.

Linking to movie 1 runs the movie, linking to Movie 1 chapter 1 runs the movie, linking to movie 2 (with or without chapter 1) runs the second movie, audio only - no video.

I'm using a 2D animated menu and movie 1 (both buttons) shows an animated movie, but movie two's button shows a black area.

I'm obviously missing something, but what?

Thanks again for the help so far

    Cheers

  • I’m Pleased as punch
Sorry, please ignore the above message. I've found the create chapters button and have rebuilt my menu and it all looks great. Exactly what I was hoping for.

  • Yes, I've just finished all the renaming (Phew!)

    One minor irritation...

I'm using the "Vacation" template from the Standard 2D selection. The buttons are little suitcases with an animated scene from the beginning of the movie in the middle. This does as expected with the "Play Movie" button (it cycles the first 25 seconds of the movie), but the "Scenes" and "Extras" buttons play the same scene, one of the choices in the Extras menu.

In more detail. One of my Extras is a video of the Messina Clock Tower. This is the first segment in Movie 2. The Extras button points at "Chapter Menu (Movie2)" and plays the first 25 seconds of the Messina clock Tower video. The Scenes button points at "Chapter Menu (Movie1)", but also plays the same 25 seconds of the Messina Clock Tower video. These two buttons are synchronised, so the animations cycle together.

What I would really like is for the top level menu to not show any animated video in these two buttons. Animated video of the movie or segment being played is OK, but the way it is just looks wrong.

    Any advice would be welcome.

As an aside, when I edit one of the original .m2ts files and recreate it at a different length, will the DVD project automagically adjust the time line and chapter definitions to fit the new movie or will I need to do something to readjust everything manually?

    Thanks again for the help

    Tony,

Replacing a video seems to work:

The synchronized buttons looks like a bug. In any case, the buttons can be replaced:

    The result:

Also, all of the template components can be replaced with your own background picture, buttons, etc.

  • I’m happy again
Thanks once again for the prompt and clear reply. My main menu buttons are now fixed and the two buttons pointing at sub menus now don't animate.

    Cheers

  • Sorry to be a pain, but I've hit another small problem.

When I select a chapter through the Scenes Menu or an extra through the extras menu, I want that to play and then return to the menu, so we can manually select another scene or extra. What is happening is the movie starts playing at the selected scene (or extra) and then continues to the end of the movie.

In the Disc/Project tab, I have the following settings:

    First Play item: Main Menu
    Title Menu: Main Menu
    End Action: jump to menu
Additional Folder: Nothing (this is greyed out)

I'm probably missing something, but what?

    Thanks

    Tony

  • Thanks once more for the prompt reply.

We will just have to stop playback manually when the chapter finishes. Not a big drama.

    Thanks again
