How can I move Platinum 16 from my c to d drive in windows 10?

I'm running out of space on my c drive, solid state and need to move my Nero to my d data drive. Must I uninstall and reinstall? Will the reinstall let me put it there? I do not believe I had that option in my previous install. Please help! Please reply!

  • I would go about it in this order:
#1. Make a search on disk and set a condition to search for files bigger than 100 MB or something.

So you might find what folders and files are really taking a lot of space.
It might not be other than media files or some other application that is better to move to create space.

And there are settings in Nero to tell where certain media is to be stored by default.

#2. There are ways to link folders from one disk to another
In windows 7 command is linkd.exe.

With these commands you can create a transparent reference from one disk to another - and nothing needs reinstalling.

    Example
    You have a folder Program Files\Nero\Platinum 16 on C-drive.

Create a folder D:\CNERO or some other name on D-disk.
Copy Platinum 16-folder to this folder CNERO.
Delete Platinum 16-folder on C-disk to recycle bin.
From C:\program files\Nero folder use linkd commands to create a junction or folderlink called Platinum 16 there and point that to D:\CNERO\Platinum 16

So the folder Platinum 16 is now a junction that is transparent to computer, all accesses will be referred to D-drive.

  • Try mklink and help for that.

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...

You will get a folder icon, but with an arrow in it to symbolize a shorcut to another location. But it will work just like a folder from software point of view.

I don't know why they change names of everything like that.
In XP you had to download a special command junction, so it existed already in XP.

  • Can't get it, I got this far...
    C:\WINDOWS\system32>mklink/d/c:/program files (x86)/nero/d:/dcnero
    then I get
    Invalid switch - "c:\program".
I am a novice, Can you help Lars?

  • Your command:
    mklink/d/c:/program files (x86)/nero/d:/dcnero

    Example from microsoft
    mklink /d \MyDocs \Users\User1\Documents

So blanks between parameters on the row is important.
And please observe that quotes around one parameter since it would be interpreted as many parameters..
And please also note backslash rather than forward slash is part of folder paths.

    Like this
    mklink /d "c:\program files (x86)\nero" d:\dcnero

Alternative, don't remember by heart exactly the syntax it will accept.
    mklink "/d c:\program files (x86)\nero d:\dcnero"

But please note, the Nero folder under program files (x86) should be copied first to the folder DCNERO on d-drive and then lifted/deleted to recycle bin.

The folder link you create should replace the existing normal folder, so old folder gone and new folder link will be accepted.

If you have a friend that is more experienced, talk to him to assist on site by you.

And I would really have a look closely how much space this really saves. I doubt it saves so much space for you - since all data probably takes more space and is not located where programs are.

  • Thank you so much Lars. I'll try it and here's what windows 10 tells me.
    Nero2016 86.8MB
    Wave Editor 86.6MB
    Nero 2016 Cont. Pack 58.6MB

  • No problem.
But with that little data - to save anything we should look at Gigabytes, not megabytes.
I would not bother for 0.2 Gigabyte.

My guess is that media files for audio or video uses much more than total of that installation.

Installations on Windows have become scattered over the years, and more recent windows have data placed under either
    a) c:\programdata folder for all users, different software do differently
    b) c:\users\yourusername is most common

You can rightclick these folders and take properties to get totalt size of those and everything below.

If you use search on disk from windows button and search field - and let it search different file types that usually can become large like:
    a) *.wav
    b) *.jpg
    c) *.mov
    d) *..mpg
    e) *.mp4
    f) *.mp3

So you can do a single search over disk putting these as one search by separating with semikolon like this.

    In search field put
    *.wav;*.jpg;*.mov;*.mpg;*.mp4;*.mp3

and select "more search alternatives" or similar right there above search field.
This let you search computers all disks for these files, and you can see by size what really takes a lot of space. Click on size column, and sort accordingly.

There are more refined options to also filter by size, so only files above a certain size will be listed.

  • You mean like c:\users\yourusername\Nero ?

Maybe a search over disk would tell you what files occupy space.

Or on the C-disk takes properties - and use the clean disk utility button there, I assume for windows 10 as well. This will list various temporary files installers use etc. It cleans up what windows update do and many things.

The symbolic link operation might be worth it on that data folder. But maybe once you know what really matters.

  • Yes, 2.28 GB (2,450,420,110 bytes) on Nero folder, but downloads was about the same so I moved those to the D drive. I had to delete what was in the Nero folder since it wouldn't let me delete the whole thing, telling me it was in use.The second of your 2 suggestions seemed to work, but Nero would not run looking for a different path. But thanks to you I'm over 2 gigs less on the drive have moved downloads. Nero is back where it was and functions,

  • ".The second of your 2 suggestions seemed to work, but Nero would not run looking for a different path."

But the symbolic link makes the change without any change of path as such. So something was not made right.

The original folder is replaced by a symbolic link folder with the same name as the original - and the rest is transparent to whatever software.

But better to do it on the data paths like c:\programdata and below and c:\users and below - since most software put the more spacey files there. Especially on multimedia software like Nero.

Another way to save space is to compress the files as such - it often makes half size on disk. On the disk on a specific folder not used so much anymore, rightclick and take properties - and on one of the tabs check to compress to save space and execute with OK.

On folder writing a lot of files - there is little performance penalty - but otherwise good enough.

It means your older Nero versions folders could be compressed through this method. This without relocating anything.

And I recently made 10G of extra space from cleaning up procedure I mentioned on disk, removing old windows update files and also options to removed old system restore points but the last one. It took a good while being the first on 6 years since getting that computer but was worth it.

  • Firstly Lars, please accept my thanks for helping me solve my problem. You went above and beyond my expectations and with your help and advice I now have 47.5 gigs free on my C drive. I had only 12 free when I started. I don't know why the link commands did not work but I am very happy with the results I have. Have a great new year. Thank you!
