How do I change write speed in Burning ROM (to a lower speed than available in the drop-down menu)?

When I want to burn a CD or DVD in Burning ROM, I am unable to change to a slower speed than the one shown in the drop-down menu.
Say, for example, I'm burning a DVD-R data disk: The slowest speed option is 8x; I would like to burn it at 4x.
How do I do this?

TIA

  • Probably you cannot. Like you I like to burn DVDs at 4X and the option is usually available.

The fact it doesn't appear indicates your disc drive/disc combination doesn't support 4X. Nero is making available the speeds which your drive indicates are available to it with your disc. Try another brand of disc. What are you currently using?

  • Thanks, Eric, for the response.

I've been using Verbatim DVD-R's only until a few days ago; the 4x option was still there. Then I burned a Maxwell DVD+R for a friend; Nero / my LG burner would let me burn that disk only at 8x+.
When I went back to burning a Verbatim DVD-R, the 4x option was no longer available.

    Any suggestions?

  • Presumably you are using the same type of Verbatims that you were previously?

My only suggestion is in Nero Burning ROM go to the Drives drop down list and on its right is an icon that looks like a filing cabinet. That takes you into details of your optical drive and options. See if there's anything there you can fiddle with.

It's as though your drive needs resetting after the + disc. I'd burn a -RW 2X or 4X disc to 'remind' it slower speeds do exist!
