How do I set video to recode/import in 16:9 width?
I recoded a DVD with video originally filmed in widescreen with a Digital8 camcorder. However, it recodes the vid in 4:3 format. Why is it not 16:9 as filmed and how can I widen it?

Hello Andrew-
Which you imported the file into Recode, does it show the input and output resolution correctly?
What did you select for the device?
If you go into Edit Settings, is Aspect Ratio set to "Original" and the Resolution set to Automatic? -

I think you meant 16:9 rather than 16:6. In your last screen shot, it looks like it's 16:9. If you grab the upper center button and drag it to the top, it should give you the same 16:9 without any cropping, just like in your first screenshot.
If you burn it with those settings, play it back with Nero MediaHome. Either capture a frame with Nero Video or provide a screenshot which shows the aspect ratio. -

Andrew,
It appears that your screenshots show a 4:3 aspect ratio video.
Can you independently verify the resolution of your source file? How does the video appear in a player such as Nero MediaHome or VLC Player or Daum PotPlayer?
Alternatively, you can use the free MediaInfo program to determine the aspect ratio. For example, here is the basic MediaInfo data for the two files shown above:

The video on the DVD (but NOT the ripped version on my hard drive) plays properly proportioned on the Nero Kwik Media Player, but only when I choose either "linear stretch to fit" OR "non-linear stretch to fit".
Here's both for comparison, they're slightly different. Which is the "natural" 16:9?
Linear stretch:
Nonlinear stretch:

Andrew,
I have no idea what the difference is between the non-linear and linear stretch settings, but it doesn't appear to make a great deal of difference!
How about a screenshot without stretching?
How did you rip the video from the DVD?-
Andrew,
When I look back at your screenshots, the "stretched" versions look "normal" to me whereas the people in the Recode screenshot seem to have elongated heads? So, it appears that Recode is somehow misinterpreting the video's Display Aspect Ratio? You could look at the video's metadata by downloading the MediaInfo program using the link above. If you open the DVDs .VOB file and select the "Text" display lots of metadata for the file will appear.
In any case, I thought it might be helpful to start with some knowns. Namely, I created an "exact" 4:3 DVD structure starting with a 720x540 picture and an "exact" 16:9 DVD structure starting with a 960x540 picture. I've zipped them up and uploaded them: DVDs [~2 MB].
Please download the .zip file, unzip the contents, and try each VIDEO_TS folder in Recode to see if they shed any light on the issue.
Also, you mention running "Kwik Media" in what appears to be a modern version of Windows. Please post your Nero Recode version. And, when you click "KwikMedia", am I correct in assuming that Nero MediaHome actually appears? -

I'll download the MediaInfo program and see what I can figure out with that.
Here's a screen of the video as it plays without stretching (wrong).
As for the differences in the stretched version pics, the linear setting appears to stretch in the middle and the nonlinear setting stretches from the sides, causing the elongated head on the right .
Both stretched images also appear to be slightly cut off on the sides too. But both issues might be a red herring as it's just a player stretch thing. -

As for the ripping, I imported the DVD, but not the structure of it.
-
Andrew,
Have you tried downloading and viewing the DVD structures I uploaded?
After opening one of the larger .VOB files on your DVD in MediaInfo, select Text display:
Then, right-click and "Select All", then right-click and "Copy" to the clipboard:
Then, paste into a post here:
For a cleaner presentation, precede the pasted text with 'PRE' and add '/PRE' at the end. (not the ', but enclosed in angle brackets - left and right arrows - less than, greater than symbols). I can't find a way to show it because they're special symbols. -
-
Another attempt at showing the PRE codes:

Andrew,
Regardless of what is causing this issue, you may be able to get usable video by using the settings below. That's either Letterbox or Stretch aspect ratio, not Original; Custom resolution set to dimensions that are 16:9, such as, 960x540, 720x405, etc. (Recode will make slight adjustments). After making the settings, proceed with the recoding.

Omega Tester: I downloaded your DVD structures but the TS files are unplayable.

I recoded the DVD with the custom settings, but I don't know where the file was sent to ( I shut down Nero inadvertently) so I can't check to see if the recoding actually stretched it or not.

Andrew,
I've recoded your example with Nero 12, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 Recode, zipped the results, and uploaded to here [134 MB].
Here's a screenshot:
Are you using Nero 12? -

I could do that, but even the recoded vids you send me made with the newer versions of Nero are worse than the vids on the disk, which really noticeable in the outdoor shot. If only recode would actually recognize the 16:9 format on the DVD automatically.

Andrew,
I'll assume that you don't have aspect ratio problems with the .mpg file that you uploaded. Correct?
So, instead of importing the entire DVD into Recode, how about opening one of the large .VOB files in the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD. Does Recode have the correct aspect ratio? If not, please upload that .VOB file and provide a link. -
