How about some up-to-date free tools to restore old backups?

Nero,

After getting involved in my first "old backup" problem on the forum in topic
How do I convert NCO files to jpg?,
I've seen what a horrible situation users have been left in.

Why not update the old backup programs to run on modern Windows versions, disable the backup function, and supply the result as a free tool?

  • Please help. The whole concept of a backup tool not allowing you to RESTORE your backup is oxymoronic.

  • I didn't look at the link. Sometimes, selecting a drive, rather than a particular folder, has been successful. However, since this backup has been made with a very old version of Nero which creates .nco files, the options are very limited.

    • It would be a good analogy for a password protected Microsoft Word document or encrypted WinZip file that couldn't be opened for that reason. But, it doesn't do much for this topic. Again, this topic is asking Nero to provide a free tool that enables users to restore backups made by old Nero BackItUp programs. If you think that would be the responsible thing to do, feel free to put a like on it.

So, Nero tech support was able to tell me that my key was a Nero 6 one and gave me a link to it. Then they told me it was only supported on XP. Super useful!

Anyway, I still tried Backit-up 6 on my Windows 8.1 machine and IT WORKED ! I was able to recover my file. 2 more sets of DVDs to go and I'll move to another option. Pity OneDrive just moved their max size to 10GB as this file is 12GB but I can also go and save the video as-is on a Blu-ray and avoid this Nero versioning crap.

Anyhow, here is the Nero 6 link, but you'll need you key: http://nero-mirror.com/support/Nero-6...

WTMF?? This was already an assumption made by Microsoft since XP. Software manufacturer's know how determined a user is going to be to install programs that they had purchased in the past EVEN AFTER THEY UPGRADE TO A NEW PC WITH THE LATEST OS. So Microsoft made sure that program compatibility could and would remain stable for older software by designing Windows XP and later to include the WINDOWS COMPATIBILITY WIZARD. Remember? Right click on the setup.exe file, choose the "Compatibility" tab then use the pull down menu to select which OS you'd like this software to run under.. ???

Look, I purchased the full suite of Nero 6 Ultra, back in '03.. It works so great for me. I refuse, simply refuse to be told that I have to pay again for software that works great and does everything I need it to. I too get this fu**ing message, "please select the correct folder", while attempting to use Nero BackItUP Essentials Version 12.5.5000 that was preinstalled on my ACER E1 with Windows 8 (64-bit) to RESTORE backups that I created with Nero 6 Ultra's BackItUp 1.2.0.24, and it leads you into an unsolvable loop of bullsh**! You simply cannot select the actual backup file, it just keeps saying "PLEASE SELECT THE CORRECT FOLDER." Well I did select the MF right folder, and file for that matter.

Anyways, just about every product that is part of the Nero 6 Ultra Suite, don't work on my Windows 8.. Heck, they wont even launch.. The just fail, even though I instructed the compatibility wizard to install and run all Nero apps as if they were on Windows XP SP2 and SP3. Why is it that even though these type of issues were preconceived and solved before the release of the OS from Microsoft, that the stupid software still fails to even function in that emulator?

I bet Ahead's developers designed this strategically into every product starting with Nero 7 and after: To purposely corrupt the installation of older versions so they won't launch, work or even function in newer Windows environments, then FORCING THE END USER TO PUCHASE some UPDATE or even give them no other option but to UPGRADE to the latest version, putting them $94 IN THE HOLE. Well, it's obvious to THIS End User, that our compatibility issues when trying to RESTORE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT BACKUPS CREATED WITH NERO BACKITUP was B Y D E S I G N.

Thanks for the Holiday disaster, AHEAD..

    Peace Out,
    Craig in San Diego

P.S. Oh and I fully support this discussion thread and "Omega Tester's" topic "How about some up-to-date free tools to restore old backups?" Yes, I request and DEMAND to be allowed to restore my old backups either with my current Nero software or LET ME USE MY OLD BACKITUP to restore it (i.e. provide a fix that will let me install NERO 6 on Windows 8 64-bit).

  • Although this has nothing to do with the subject of this thread, have you tried running your v6 apps as the administrator?

  • That's affirmative. I belong to the administrators group. I clearly remember this same thing happening when I tried to use my Nero 6 ultra CDROM in my Windows 7 Ultimate: An instant pop-up alert saying, "This program has compatibility issues". click to install anyway.... yadda yada. Frustrating
