How can I recover my .nba files (created on Windows XP) on either a Windows 7 or Windows 8 computer?

I used Nero Backitup version 7 on a Windows XP computer. The computer no longer works, and I have two other computers, one running Windows 7 and one running Windows 8. I reloaded the Backitup software on the Windows 8 computer and when I tried to recover my .nba files (there are no .nbi files) the software told me it could not recover the files because they were created on a different operating system. Is there any way to make this work?

  • Do you mean Backitup that came with Nero v7? To my knowledge there is no Backitup v7.

If the former, it is not supposed to be compatible with Win 7 or Win 8 although I've never understood why not.

What kind of files did you back up? For instance were there any system files in the backup?

You can open .nba files with a good zip program. Some of the file names may be truncated but the file content should not be affected.

Yes actually, there was a backitup version 7 (thats what is says, at least). I used it as a full system backup in case the computer were to crash (which it did). I tried a free version of Backitup 2014 to open the files and it did not work because it only wanted to use .nbi files.

What kind of zip program do you recommend? If I could use that it would be great.

  • I don't understand. Backitup 4 was for v9 and Backitup 5 was used for v10 and v11 (I believe). Backitup v12 was used in Nero v12.

The only way that you could restore your backup using Backitup is if you have a partition or drive not containing your current operating system. You could use the ImageTool to create a bootable disc to restore the backup but, unless you chose a drive/partition other than your current C: drive, it would overwrite your current operating system.

You could use 7-zip, J-zip, or another to open the .nba files. I'm surprised they're .nba files since a drive backup usually creates .nda files.

Actually, if you right click on one of the files in Windows Explorer and select Open, the Windows zip utility might open them.
