I’m getting mad that I bought this version

How do you edit out a section of a video with Nero Video

I am a newcomer to Nero 2014. I have been using Nero 9 for a long time.
I am trying to edit out a section of a recording that I have imported.
I have tried Express and Advanced editing but find that a cut portion has its audio scrambled with other sounds.
Step by step
Import file
Drag down to editing time line.
Select point at which cut required.
Select split tool and position on red line Click.

This causes the second portion have scrambled audio
I have tried this in Nero 9 and it works perfectly.

What am I doing wrong?

  • Hi Alan-

I'm not sure what split tool you're talking about. From your description, you didn't mark the end point.

With the video on the timeline, click on the scissors on the right. hover the scissors over the video on the timeline and when you get where you want to start the cut, click. Continue to select the endpoint and click. Click on the "Selection" tool (white arrow) and click on the part you just defined. Right click and select "delete and close gap". Done. You might want to zoom in on the timeline to get precise cuts.

    Scissors-tool: X
    Selection-tool: V
Closing the gap: Marking the part to delete and press Shift + Del

  • I suspect I may not have done the cutting correctly before. I do note that I did not appreciate that there is a difference between splitting and trimming of which more later.
I had been trying to remove the first part of a clip up to a point I had found by selecting it as you said but then CUT not Remove from track. I have repeated my editing this time choosing an advert in the way you describe.

Find the start of the clip to be removed select the scissors and cut the clip, then still with the scissors selected find the end of the clip and cut the clip. Then I used the selection tool to point to the clip part to be removed and right clicking clicked Remove from track and close gap. This correctly merged the now two required parts together and on replaying from before the cut until after the cut, the video is clear and smooth.

BUT the audio now starts out correctly then looses synchronisation with lip movements. Almost as if the cuts were not cutting the audio track/s.

Any more things I am doing wrong?

About trimming the start of a clip how do the instructions you gave need to be varied?

  • The major difference with cutting for the two versions is that v9 automatically deletes the cut video and removes the gap.

The easiest way to trim in v14 is as follows:

Double click on the video on the timeline or in the media area. The trim window will open. Move either the right or left marker (or both) inwards to the point where you want to remove material. Clicking on OK, deletes everything to the right or left of whichever marker you moved.

You can also trim using the scissors technique, if you wish.

I need to test your other concern.

I think I will try as a last resort uninstalling and reinstalling Nero 3014

  • No I did not. However when I tried with it enabled the trim function when OK was clicked seemed to remove everything else but the clip that I had positioned the Mark in and mark out at.
That seems a cack handed way to do it.

  • Alan,

The time display can be used to accurately cut:

    1. Select the cut tool.
    2. Click on the digits of the time display that you want and type new digits.
    3. Make the cut.
    4. Click on the digits, etc, for the next cut.
    5. Make the next cut.
    6. Change to the selection tool and remove the section isolated by the cuts.

I have tried this and have no sync difficulties. Is this how you started?

  • I have un-installed all Nero from my machine. I then re-downloaded Nero 2014 and the content-pack. I installed only the base product and tried again.
Following your comment above about the trim function I followed these steps.
1 Move input movie to Video area by drag and drop.
2 Found by the tedious method of moving the red line along until I found an advert I wanted to remove.
3 Precisely found the exact position before the advert using the stupid shuttle wheel
4 Double clicked the video in the time line area
5 When the trim dialog appeared I moved the Mark in pointer to the point noted in 3
6 Moved the Mark out pointer to the approximate end of the advert.
7 Positioned the Mark out pointer to the exact end of the advert.
    8 Clicked OK
9 I was left with only the advert.
    NOT WHAT WAS REQUIRED!

Your instructions above about the trim window seemed to suggest that clicking OK would remove EITHER the remainder of the clip before the Mark out if that was the last moved pointer OR the remainder of the clip after the Mark in if that was the last pointer moved.

I have tried searching for a tutorial which illustrates the removing of parts of a movie but there do not appear to be any. I then tried searching for the same in earlier versions of Nero Video. I found one for Nero Video 11 but it was so different to what is in Nero Video 2014 that it was useless.

Isn't about time the tutorials available from Nero were updated and extended to help people like me. It is not giving Nero a good reputation.

Just a simple step by step text would be better than the C%^$ that is available on the Nero website.

  • The trim window worked as it should. You can't remove video from within its ends using the trim function, as I noted previously. You have to use the cut feature. Works the same in v9.

Note that Nero Video has an Ad Spotter which you can use to remove advertisements. Click on the down arrow shown in my screenshot and click on Ad Spotter.

Run it using all the defaults. It will delineate what it thinks are advertisements and you can remove them using the "remove from track...............".

  • I have tried that feature and no matter what setting I use it does not correctly identify the beginning or the end of all the adverts so I revert to the first step cutting.

Back to the real problem. I understand you to say that the trim function cannot remove from within the marks. I have tried the cut procedure similar to V9.
find the start of the place to cut, cut, then find the place for the end of the cut and cut, the movie is now in three pieces, the beginning, the advert and the remainder.
I then used the selection tool to point to the advert in the timeline and right click the advert piece select remove and close gap. this works the clip is now correctly the first piece and the remainder. However if I try to play the clip from before the remainder at the point just after the start of the remainder the sound is interrupted by sound from somewhere else in the movie.

    There is a bug somewhere.

  • The ad spotter may not detect the exact location of the start and ending of the ad. In that case, you would have to do further cuts.

Can you tell what part of the video the sound is coming from? I don't quite follow the "from" and "after" reference points where you hear the sound.

  • I’m optimistic
Many thanks for the sample file. I have tried to edit it the same way I did when I got the error but not error occurred.
It was quite difficult to make the cut just before the audio but I successfully clipped out the "ninth second" to "thirteenth second" part.
Now that suggests that it has something to do with the file that I am trying to edit.

I have successfully made the same advert removal from the movie I use in Nero 9 with no extra audio appearing. Without listening to all the audio from the movie I cannot say exactly where the audio comes from.

    Example
the beginning of the clip plays normally up to the point where I made the removal. As the playback continues there are about 4/5 seconds with the expected audio then it goes silent for 1 second and then audio from somewhere else is heard.
What gives it away is the point in the movie that is after the clip removal is of a soldier running into a castle forecourt and up to a room, the soldier who has run in then listens at the door. We see the occupant of the room is bathing (female of course) the soldier tries to look through the keyhole he then knocks on the door. We do not hear the knocking it is silent, the occupant obviously hears the knock and is startled. We the hear voices but they do not sync with the occupants lip movements.

This is a clip from The Scarlet Pimpernel broadcast by Channel 5 in the UK via Sky.
This is recorded on the Sky box internal hard disk. I later copy it to a DVD recorder and the import the files to Nero. I do not have access to anywhere that I could drop the sample it is after all 1GB in size.

Do you think I need to report this to technicalsupport@nero.com?

If you write to Tech Support, the correct address is techsupport@nero.com.

The file can be uploaded to your free Nero BackItUp site if you have one. It can also be uploaded to a free DropBox account if you have one. Same for OneDrive (SkyDrive). However, maybe you could record a smaller example and use it for test/upload purposes. if it has the same problems.

You might also try recoding the original and then editing the result.

  • Alan,

i've downloaded your files and imported the .VOB into Nero 2014 Video. I didn't search for commercials. I simply cut from 2:00:00 to 5:00:00 and then from 6:00:00 to the end. So, what's left is the first 2 minutes as they were, followed by a single minute after the cut. It is in sync as far as I can tell. I've uploaded the result and the procedure I used. It takes very little time, so please give it a go so that we're on the same page.

The result with the abrupt transition at the 2 minute point:

  • Alan,

Something is definitely wrong somewhere! My movie option settings were set for 4:3, yours for 16:9?

There's a program called MediaInfo that prints out metadata for media files. The data for your .VOB is really strange. It reminds me of a case from Scotland a while back.

The data for your .VOB is below. Among other things, it indicates that a 439 MiB file has a duration of just over 39 seconds! I'll be fooling with this and get back tomorrow probably.

  • Alan,

I've made three 2 minute videos:

    1. Using 4x3 PAL movie options, I placed the VOB on tracks 1 and 2. I cut them both at 8 seconds. I set the opacity of track 2 to 50 % to allow track 1 to bleed through. I cut the track 2 video at 2:00:00 and 6:00:00 and removed the center. I used a workspace to export the last 2 minutes.

    2. A repeat of 1) using 16x9 PAL movie options.

    3. Similar to 2), but track 2 had your MP4 split at 2 seconds with the latter half moved to 6 seconds.

Despite the strange MediaInfo data, the sync on all of them looks good.

Images showing the setup for 1 and 3 follow. (2 was like 1):

  • When you "sync" do you mean the video is correctly removed and the two parts are cleanly connected?
Or do you mean the sound is without interruption and no extra sounds are heard.
Please see the version of the clip I have uploaded to Dropbox as

the sound is distinctly wrong just after the soldier reaches the door. I have also noted a lip sync problem much earlier than the advert end.

I have raised a support incident with techsupport@nero.com.
I have also noticed a large number of problems being raised in the forum about Sound in Nero Video. Mine could be just another one.

  • Alan,

I have come across a bizarre circumstance. I put your .VOB on track 1 and 2 and then cut out from 0m30s to 2m00s on track 1. If I export this with both audio tracks unmuted, there is sporadic audio during the X2 section starting at about 1m17s. If I mute track 1 or track 2 and export, there is no sporadic audio! Also, I did have an occurrence with both tracks unmuted where there was audio during the cut and a total loss of sync after the cut. However, I am unable to repeat that case. (Track 2 has 50% opacity).

Do you have any similar video that has no fast forward segments that you can upload?

Here's the latest project with both both audio tracks unmuted.

I'm going to look at what you've posted now and probably put the videos I made on YouTube.

  • Alan,

I've seen a lack of sync in the video you posted. I've made a short example from it and posted it on YouTube. It's a 30 second snippet starting at 5:55:00 of your video. There's a place where a man in a cowboy hat says "Whew" or something like that. I placed a red flash just before the sound and a blue flash just before the motion. (The chimes sound early also). Your video has nothing cut before the lack of sync - it appears to go out of sync after the 2X segment. On the other hand, it's not as long as the .VOB?

Although I can't find it, it seems that the Scotsman was able to overcome his difficulties by copying his DVD to his hard drive and then importing from the VIDEO_TS folder there. Are you importing directly from the DVD?

  • Alan,

Now that I've been able to replicate your issues at will, I've taken my own suggestion and worked with your .VOB in Nero 2014 Recode. I trimmed out a segment from 2m00s to 8m00s and recoded it to an MP4 with no sync issues.

Furthermore, I recoded your entire .VOB and was able to work with that in Nero 2014 Video without sync issues.

Since I don't know if you have only have Nero Video or a Nero suite with Recode, I've uploaded the .MP4 to DropBox for your enjoyment.

  • Thanks for all the work Omega.
I have created a shorter clip of the source video copied it to dropbox as
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/8jxf1bof49s...
and then edited it the same way we have been discussing and it is at
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/65vb4vzs3cg...

This latter exported MP4 exhibits a different sound "out-of-sync" condition the extraneous sound can be heard a little after the soldier knocks on the door and talks to the female bathing who then sends him on his way. We then see her raising her glass to her lips but do not hear what she says. In the original uncut clip she days "right under my nose" .
The source of the sound which appears thereafter can be heard much later in the clip.
I have not heard back from techsupport@nero.com since they asked for a whole lot of data. I will advise what they say.
Have you any comment on the increasing number of problems being raised about sound in Nero 2014?

  • Further to your question about other video clip problems I have not tried other videos but that could easily be arranged.
I have the whole Nero 2014 suite including Recode. I too noticed that after recoding the original long clip which took hours the editing appeared to go correctly no sound problems as far as I can recall.
Adopting that method of having to recode everything is not a starter it takes too long.
At the moment if this cannot be cleared up I am going back to Nero 9 which works flawlessly!!

  • Alan,

I have very little time at the moment, but a few observations for the record, as they say:

    1. Nero 12 Video has the same issue.

    2. Your VOB -> MP4 -> edit is OK as stated above.

    3. Your VOB -> MP4 -> NV2014 DVD-Video -> sync is OK -> edit is OK,

    4. Your VOB -> NV2014 DVD-Video -> is out-of-sync (no editing).

    5. Your VOB -> Recode DVD - is out-of-sync (no editing).

Some serious issues with "fit-to-disc" arose with the release of Nero 12. Maybe this is one that didn't get caught (or acknowledged!). I'll turn on my old computer later and give NV11 a shot. That'll be fun!

The sync problems never stop coming.

  • Alan, you should send an e-mail to tech support before giving up on this version.
    • Maybe you could confirm Alan's findings since you have both version 9 and version 2014. That might help him move forward with Tech Support. The easiest way is to download his latest VOB, import it and then export to a format of your choice. Do this in version 9 and 2014. Then, import one to track 1 in Nero Video, the other to track 2. Play.

To save you time, here's Alan's VOB.
    • So, Wither 1, if you do this, it may help Alan get his refund if that's where this goes. In any case, it would verify everything he has said about version 9, etc. That would help convince Nero that this is real. I have confirmed a problem in versions 11, 12, and 2014. I don't have version 9 or 10.

I've had the same difficulties using Nero 11 Video. Also, I've downloaded your new files. I see the problem. Later.

  • I took the very first .vts and cut it as you mentioned and exported it to mp4. The first thirty seconds of the exported file played and then silence.

I exported the audio to file, opened it in WaveEditor and then cut out the audio from 30 seconds to 60 seconds and then 6 minutes to the end. The audio for the first 30 seconds played but the next approximately 60 seconds didn't and then it played to the end. Very strange.

  • I imported the file into v9. After I cut the 30-60 seconds, I played the video without exporting it. It had no audio from the end of the cut for 51 seconds similar to WaveEditor. However, the rest of it played correctly. I then cut everything after 6 minutes and exported the file. It played the same as before I exported it.

Went back to 2014 and did the same thing again. Before exporting, it lost the audio for the same 51 seconds but the audio was there in the remainder. After exporting to file, there was no audio for that 51 seconds and all following video.

In v9, it is treating the video as PAL (720x576). I'm using the Nero Digital and Nero Digital Standard for output. In v14, it's treating the video as NTSC 720x480 and the bit rate is slightly different. I selected mpeg-4, mpeg-4. I exported the project as 720x576 in v14 and it didn't make any difference.

  • I didn't play the whole thing through when I started so I wasn't aware it was silent in that area. Oh well.

I took the file I exported from v9 and imported it into v14 and then exported it. The resulting file plays all the audio except the 51 seconds.

Figure that one out. It's like v9 remuxed it. The only differences in exports are the NTSC vs PAL settings.

  • I honestly don't know what the aspect ratio or resolution would have to do with it. As far as I know, Nero Digital conforms to mpeg-4, H.264, same as mpeg-4 in v14. Both are using mp3 and stereo as the audio output. The only difference is the the bit rate.

  • Now isn't this special. I imported Alan's video into v10 and there was audio throughout except for 1 second. I played it in NMH and found the same thing. Not sure what I could have done to cause that.

So, I deleted that file and unzipped and extracted the original file. It plays like what we've been seeing with the 51 or so seconds of dead audio time. In v10, if I cut at 30 seconds and 60 seconds, it not only cuts that portion but also the entire video portion with the dead audio time. So I cut at about 58 seconds without losing the rest. Upon export, the resulting file behaves just like the one from v14.

I've also noticed that v9 exports the file very quickly, maybe 3 minutes. V10 took a little over 4 minutes and v14 took almost 8 minutes.

I appreciate your help with this Wither.
What I would appreciate more would be a response to my raising an incident with techsupport@nero.com Nero ID [3308237002]

  • That's the right thing to do.

There's really something funky about that video though. As far as I know, this is not a widespread problem in any version of Nero. I can't explain why v9 but none of the others would handle it correctly .

  • I’m still mad
I have been dredging back into my past. I think I tried Nero V10 sometime ago (3/4 years) and did not like it but I cannot remember whether it had this problem.
I assumed that the latest version would be a better bet than Nero 9 for a soon to arrive new PC. I went ahead and bought it (my bad). I should have tried a trial version first.
Originally I was looking for an update which would allow me to edit out the irritating way that broadcasters split the screen at the end while the titles are still rolling and show an advert for the next program. I was informed that Nero V10 or 11 had that capability. It is all academic now I am now looking for a different video editor, although I will persevere with V9 until I find it.

  • Hang in there with tech support. Did they ever ask you to provide your video?

By the way, I don't have any pull with Nero. I'm just a volunteer.

Even if they didn't ask I sent them the links that you have to the original .VOB file and my attempt at exporting it as an MP4.

    Thanks for all your help.

  • For one thing, I am afraid that your recording is not perfect enough. If you want to make your recording clean by removing unexpected noise and keep system audio only, you can try one of the tools best screen recorder. For another, to exactly make a cutting selection, you should take the aid of either online or offline video cutting tool.
