I’m frustrated

I Am Tired Of Playlist Quirks

I have one version of MediaHome. After installing Multimedia 2010, Platinum 2015 and Platinum 2018, I kept MediaHome 2018. Now, I have lost track of how many times I had to do this. I cannot understand why I cannot create a playlist and expect it to show each time. Why does Nero maintain this quirk where it loose playlist contents. I had Nero's technical support for this; and things are getting redundant. At first, I at least had names for the playlists on the far left in the program window if not the songs I put under them. Now, after they told me to rename the two Nero folders under AppData, I do not even have the playlist names. I am sick and tired of this. Does Nero take its customers for granted?

  • Hi troothteller-

    I can't reproduce your problem.

Note that renaming the folders in the AppData folder causes you to lose the contents of the Nero MediaHome (NMH) Library as well as all faces. In NMH 2018, one does have the option of saving the Library and recovering it later.

In addition, when you add the latest version of NMH to a system with multiple versions of Nero, you will only be able to open the latest version of NMH which, in your case, is NMH 2018.

Are the folders containing the files you use in the playlists on your hard drive and are the folders in the Nero MediaHome (NMH) Library?

Wither 1, it is too early in the day to get "bent out of shape" over a website. I had to open a new browser to get this posted. This site would not allow me to italicize; so I tried to use another program to compose this post and still settle for one style of text. Here I hope it works. Wither 1, I had to reinstall my programs after a crash last February; so:

Wither 1, I had to reinstall my programs after a crash last February; so:

    1) "Note that renaming the folders in the AppData folder causes you to lose the contents of the Nero MediaHome (NMH) Library as well as all
faces" I would not have renamed those folders if tech support did not tell me to.
    2) "...when you add the latest version of NMH to a system with multiple versions of Nero, you will only be able to open the latest version of NMH which, in your case, is NMH 2018..." That did not work that way on this system. The 2015 version became the default. I had to uninstall and reinstall each package. If I remember, the installers for the individual components ended up in a Temp folder under AppData. When I went through that I only installed the 2018 version of MediaHome.
    3) "Are the folders containing the files you use in the playlists on
your hard drive and are the folders in the Nero MediaHome (NMH)
    Library?" Yes, I already saved a file called MediaHub.1. I think I
would have to move it into this file path: C:\Users\louis\AppData\Local\Nero.

  • In regards to 1), I was just making a comment.

For 2), if you install the full v2018 on a system with v2015, you will not be able to open Nero MediaHome from v2015. It will give you a database error.

It sounds to me like you were getting some kind of error when you tried to install the full v2018 after the crash. You shouldn't have to install the individual components from the temp folder. Perhaps you'll elaborate on that.

Also, are you saying that the only part of v2018 that you installed from the temp is NMH?

Wither 1, when I described what happened with all three packages, I did not want to be second guessed. I had to install the individual components, as Multimedia 2010 once allowed, in order to avoid installing 2015 MediaHome. That MediaHome version would crash because I once used it to open an extension which that version could not open. New installations would keep trying to open it and then crash. The file extension was .tif. Everything from then on worked fine until I noticed playlists with no songs. You have things misinterpreted. I have all my programs installed except for outdated MediaHome or KwikMedia versions.

  • I just tested this function by restoring the old playlists with a backup. Then, I added a new playlist and closed the program. Now that I reopened it, I still have the new playlist. However, I only have the names of the old playlists, not the songs. What is the matter with this that I cannot add a new playlist without loosing the old? This MediaHome 2018 really appears unstable. After restoring the old playlists, I reopened the program. After I returned to the computer I saw that the program crashed and closed on its own. Now, I reopened the program. It is finding media files. Now that it completed that process I see that it only has the names of my old playlists, not the songs. I must have used a bad copy of the backup file.

  • Earlier, I had tried a number of things to reproduce the issue. If I removed the folders that contained the songs from the Library, it still showed the song names when I restarted but they weren't playable. Also, messed with creating a playlist from a CD but one needs to import the files to do that.

Above you said something about creating the mediahub.1 file and possibly moving it to the Local\Nero folder. The mediahub.1.db file in the Local folder seems to be where the files for the NMH Library are retained. If you double click on it, NMH should open and show you the playlists (if you were in Music when you last closed NMH). If the files are not available, it will first throw up an error but will continue on to display the playlists.

  • I’m confused
I am going to have to go through that procedure again, deleting the MediaHub.1 file and copying my backup to it. Just now out of curiosity I clicked on it from where I stored it. After choosing MediaHome to open it, it showed playlist names without songs. After I did this the last time, I had both the playlist names and the songs. Adding another playlist at that point would have wiped out the contents of the other playlists. You wrote, "If the files are not available, it will first throw up an error but will continue on to display the playlists." The files should be available. They are both in the Library and on the hard drive under My Music. Now, since the time of your last post, I copied my backup and restarted MediaHome. It is still going through the process of scanning for my media files. It did restore my playlists and their contents, although I do not know for how long. Meanwhile I let customer service know of my displeasure. I suspect they will discontinue support on 2018 as a ploy to get us to buy the next version. Their support was not worth much if you had to tell me not to rename those Nero files in AppData/Local.

Whoa, Wither 1, now I see what you mean by files not available. Now that the scanning for media files ended, clicking on the playlists shows them empty even though previously they showed the number of songs they contained. Now, they all show the former playlist names and "0" for contents. So, Nero does not even let the user backup his playlists. Forgive this intrusion again, but I meant to ask if the routine sequence of operations I do to maintain this computer would impact the MediaHome setup of playlists. Those operations would be shutting down, power cycling and powering up.

  • I don't know what "power cycling" means in the context of your description. To me, it's just shutting the system down and restarting it. That should have no effect on Nero since neither Windows nor any programs are loaded yet.

I'm not clear about what you're doing in reference to "mediahub.1." The Nero file is called mediahub.1.db (there's also a .config file with that name). I wouldn't do anything to those files except to use the restore feature for a copy of the backup. When you make a copy of Nero MediaHome, are you using the feature in the Options? Ditto for the restore?

Also, it sounds like you have an awful lot of folders in the library. That can really slow NMH startup.

Note that Nero's most recent policy is to support the last two versions. As far as I know, they're supporting v2016 through v2018 right now. They may have discontinued support for v2016. One time 4 or 5 months ago, they told us that they weren't supporting it but when people using it went to tech support they were getting technical support.

There's really no compelling reason to upgrade to v2019 unless you want to back up to onedrive or google drive. They've added some new templates to Nero Video and a few other little features.

"I don't know what "power cycling" means in the context of your description. To me, it's just shutting the system down and restarting it." That's only part of it. It involves disconnecting network hardware, reconnecting it and last powering up. Power cycling a laptop means unplugging, taking out the battery, hitting the power button for a few seconds, and then reversing the steps.

"I'm not clear about what you're doing in reference to 'mediahub.1.'" This is not rocket science. I have the backup file saved in a folder from which I copy it into AppData/Local/Nero after deleting the MediaHub.1 file there. Under Properties for the file it shows the .db though it is not obvious under Windows Explorer.

I do not know what Nero is supporting. What the site says and what their technicians say are different matters.

I do not see anything in Options that allows me to restore a playlist. However, I am not seeing files in my Library that correspond to my playlist content regarding the playlist names on the left.
    • I don't think the power cycyling has anything to do with the problem. I don't know why you're doing that but it's none of my business.

Somewhere in what you're doing, the links to the files in the playlists are being lost. NMH doesn't store media files.

As I asked before (in less detail), are you going into the NMH Options and selecting Library Copy, Copy Library? Are you then using the Paste Library option to restore the Library?

  • "I don't think the power cycyling has anything to do with the problem. I don't know why you're doing that but it's none of my business." No rocket science here. If you want to maintain your connection, then you have to do this as well as run security programs and get off temporary files. I prefer not to wait for a failed connection.

I do not know about these Options procedures. Please refer me to some reference that explains how to use it. I would not have used that file path if there was an easier way to restore the playlists.

In trying to fix this playlist problem, I was going to use 2018 BackItUp to move my music files to my external network drive. Now, somehow BackItUp got uninstalled. It went through an aborted installation and configuration routine. I just sent a nasty message to technical support about it. I had enough problems installing these programs without finding that they are not there.

I am being to suspect that the Nero updating process in its ControlCenter might have corrupted my installations. This morning there was a ControlCenter icon in my system tray indicating that there was an update ready to install. Opening up ControlCenter did not show one. Now, not only is 2018 BackItUp gone from this computer, after a lengthy reinstallation process after my system crashing last February, but also my 2015 version had a corrupted look. That one required an automatic downloading and installation. After that it looked corrupted as would an Internet Explorer window that could not connect to a site. Using this program depended on my being able to login.

Leaving me with the 2010 BackItUp version, it took me hours to back up my music files only to loose them while trying to restore them. The backup process created about 16 files. I only meant to clear the program box and start over, not clear the drive on which I created the backup files. Now, I am going through that backup process again.

  • I don't know what "connection" you're referring to. Never had to do any power cycling on either my workstation or desktop. I just replaced the battery on my workstation and it didn't affect anything except to get rid of the error about it. Hey, whatever you want to do. I run the windows Disc Cleanup utility to get rid of temporary files and reboot. I only have a hard drive. I would manually run the Trim function after doing that if I had an SSD, even though that is done automatically in Win 8 and Win 10 (I have neither).

    In NMH, select Options.

You will see a Library Copy option. That copies not only the Library but other things in NMH. I assume it copies playlists. I had tried this about 6 months ago but, the time it took was so long that I decided it would be easier to just reconstruct the Library and let NMH recreate things like thumbnails and faces. However, when you click on Library Copy, there are two options. The first is Copy Library. You can copy the library wherever you wish. The second option is Paste library which means you can copy and paste your saved Copy.

I don't know where your programs are magically going. Never experienced that problem and I have 9 versions of Nero installed on one system and six on this one.
In regards to BackItUp 2018, it's files are found here-

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Nero\Nero 2018\Nero BackItUp

However, BackItUp 2018 can't be used to back up files on most of the C: drive. They started that way back in BackItUp 2014 although you could work around it in that version. You definitely can't backup the operating system in BackItUp 2014 and later.

I don't know what "automatic" download your speaking of for v2015. One has to manually download it from nero.com.

I don't know how you lose files during a restore procedure unless the target location is too small. However, BackItUp in v10 wouldn't let you choose that type of target. I also don't know what type of backup you did.

  • "I don't know what "connection" you're referring to." The Internet. Power cycling is something every cable company advises to its customers. "I run the windows Disc Cleanup utility to get rid of temporary files and reboot." So do I.

These pages were unavailable yesterday. I could not login. Depending on the browser, I could not even view the page without an error message.

Last Sunday I only backed up my music files, intending to move them to a network drive. At this time I am not concerned about the rest of the system. As I said, I only have one working version of BackItUp out of three Nero packages I purchased and installed. So, to answer "I don't know what "automatic" download your speaking of for v2015. One has to manually download it from nero.com," I don't know either because it went through an installation when I thought it was installed.

In 2018 MediaHome I just hit the Paste option, assuming that it already copied the Library somewhere. Soon I will find out. Incidentally, there are music folders on my hard drive that BackItUp missed since I restored those files through BackItUp Sunday night on my network drive. I thought this Options feature was an alternative to copying that file MediaHub.1 to restore playlists from backup locations.

Spectrum has never said anything to me about power cycling and I've never done it purposely.

NMH doesn't automatically copy the library. You have to proceed as I described.

I did that copy and paste function. It did not restore the playlist. I used the only working BackItUp I have to move my music files to my network drive. However, I have to check each folder as BackItUp missed some. Right now Microsoft wants us to install six updates. So, rather any any real work, I will have to shut down after these things install. Your technical support wants me to run the NeroFirstAidKit.zip and afterward reinstall everything. We are still working with a new installation, as I told the technician. I went through that tedious installation, installing each component separately while eliminating the outdated MediaHome versions just so I could use it now. Out of the three BackItUp versions I have, only the oldest works, and not very reliably. What was the sense of buying updated programs when only the oldest one works?

  • From what I can see, you're using BackItUp 10. As I mentioned previously, it's questionable what files on the C: drive can be backed up using BackItUp 2014 and later. I used BackItUp in v10 for years without an issue. Now I use BackItUp in v12 because, like BackItUp in v10 (and all previous versions), there are far more options than in the newer versions.

Honestly, I don't know why you're using BackItUp to move files. Why not just copy and paste?

I'm going to stay away from the installation issues. There's no reason for you to have to eliminate the previous versions of NMH. Each new version of NMH disables NMH in v10 and later. In your case, you would need to start it in v2018.

Off to the golf course in a few minutes.

Wither 1, we have a big difference in what's supposed to happen vs. what's happening on this computer. I already highlighted enough of those differences. If there is a higher form of support for these threads, then I wish you would refer this there. Remember, 2015 MediaHome opened rather than 2018, requiring me to do a new installation one component at a time skipping over the older versions. As for BackItUp, only the oldest version works, having tried the newest first. Now, technical support wants me to run this NeroFirstAidKit and then reinstall everything. In the midst of this I am moving my music folders off my internal hard drive in order to get these programs to work more efficiently. While doing this I do not want to loose any file that I downloaded, which I would not have done if I did not want the file in the first place.

Now that I went through my files, I know why they all did not transfer. For my BackItUp version in Step 1, where the user selects the files he wants to backup, not everything shows that is on the hard drive. So, files corresponding to the artists I downloaded did not all show in Step 1; so I could not select them all.
    • There's no higher form of support in the forum. Just us volunteers and an occasional Nero employee. You're already dealing with tech support which is the higher form of support. The firstaidkit helps install a later version of Nero when older versions are already installed and problems occur. It will effectively make the older versions unusable and you will need to reinstall those versions again. I think they could have made the firstaidkit a little more selective in what it does but, that's just my opinion. They wrote the software.

As I mentioned, I'll stay out of the installation problems. There no reason that you should have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get v10, v2015 and v2018 installed. If NMH in v2018 doesn't supercede the version in v2015, there's something really wrong.

Wither 1, thank you. Your last sentences agree with my thoughts. I just learned that my hard drive has easier means of performing back up tasks. Still, I like having those compressed backup files. Thanks again. Now that it is morning I thought you would be amused by a technical support I just received. The technician blames registry cleaners, which I do not use. Technical Support advises me again to reinstall everything. This time installing the newest product first. This does not work. From experience I know that the installer will terminate if it detects a newer product.
    • view 1 more comment
    • Perhaps I was not clear enough. You cannot install an older Nero product if the installer detects that you already installed a newer one, contrary to what your technical service representatives told me to do.
    • I don't work for Nero.

I agree with tech support, in general. However, sometimes, if you use an old installer, it may detect some files that are newer, if you've already previously installed that version with a newer installer (or updated) or installed a newer version. Usually, it identifies which files are the problem. As an example, I think a problem in v9 and v10 was the HD Audio and a few other files in the registry would be detected. In later versions, it might be NMH. There were ways to work around them.

As you can see by the bottom left, this scanning started again as I prepared to post this screenshot. It loaded manually what it would not automatically. • I'll stick my neck out and say that the files in a playlist are stored as OLE objects. In Nero Video, files in saved projects are also saved as OLE objects. Elsewise, the stored files would consume a lot of space on the C: drive. If you move the files, the OLE objects are no longer valid. NMH won't automatically search elsewhere for the files. In Nero Video, since v2015 (I believe), Nero Video offers an option for a person to browse for files in a saved project which have been moved. NMH doesn't have that option.

If Nero MediaHome scanned all day, that means that you have a drive (s) and/or partition (s) in the Library. NMH is going to search those items for all media files every time you start it and that can take some time. I always recommend that people manually add those folders containing media that they most frequently use to the Library.

I had to swap out an older MediaHub.1 file from my Recycle Bin; otherwise it would have checked for media for hours into tomorrow. We started out trying to fix this business of compiling playlists and then loosing the content. I doubt that checking that box will repair that.

  • It's obvious you have a drive in the Library. If you don't want to wait for it to load the media on that drive so that you can get to the Library, you would need to go here-

    C:\Users\"your user name"\AppData\Local

and rename the Nero and Nero_AG folders.

I think you did that once before. You will lose all your folders, faces, thumbnails, and playlists but you will be able to get to the library to manually add the folders you wish to work with.

  • No, I am not going to do that. We lost track of the original problem, my not being able to establish a playlist without loosing its contents. Renaming folders will cause me to loose the names of the playlists themselves, where I want the songs to load. Along that path I have three Nero and three Nero_AG folders.

  • You should only have one set of folders with the names "Nero" and "Nero_AG." Could be a cause of your problems.

If you don't want to do what I suggested, then you'll just have to wait until NMH searches for media files and creates the faces and thumbnails so you can get into the Library and other Options choices.

  • I just closed out of 2018 MediaHome, which was still doing its search since about an hour ago. If it did not disturb the efficiency of my other programs then I would not mind. You said that I should only have one set of those two folders in AppData\Local. Your technical support told me to rename those folders, which I mentioned at the beginning of this thread. Tell them. Right now I am getting of the Nero mailing list. Other customers concur with me, that each new Nero product is worse than the preceding one; and with it technical support gets worse too.
    • I mentioned that I thought you had renamed the folders previously. Renaming is the only way I know of to allow you to get to the Options without waiting for NMH to stop scanning for media. Yes, it's a big inconvenience because you basically have to start from scratch with it's settings.

All the problems you've had with installing and using three different versions of Nero indicate to me that either there's something wrong with your system or you're doing some modifications to Nero files which result in the problems. As said, I have 9 versions of Nero on this system and 8 on my other system and have never encountered the problems you have. I don't know who the other customers are that agree with you but I take that comment with a grain of salt. In most cases, those customers either don't contact technical support or don't listen to tech support.

Looks like I can't help you any further.

  • Those customers had good experiences with your customer support until Nero came out with newer versions. I will not buy another Nero product after this. Of course, I will try to run for Windows System File Checker.

  • Why run the SFC? It has nothing to do with your problems.

let me ask. Why do you want v10 or 2015? There are things in those versions which aren't available in v2018 but it depends on whether or not you want those things. For instance v10 allows one to add subtitles to a video. Neither v2015 nor v2018 have that opetion. V10 and v2015 have the Nero Blu-ray player. V2018 doesn't. V10 and v2015 support HD Audio. It isn't supported in v2016 and later. BackItUp in v10 has a full complement of features not available in BackItUp 2014 and later. Each successive version of Nero since v10 has added new effects, transitions, etc. in Nero Video. On the other side, problems in versions after v10 haven't always been fixed. Some in versions like v12, haven't been fixed to this day.

Another issue is that neither v10 nor v2015 are Win 10 compatible. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like that's what you have. if you have Win 10, I can suggest a way to install v10 and v2015 which get's around the incompatibility.

  • Elsewhere in these pages I identified my OS and didn't know I had to do that again: Windows 7 64-Bit. "I have 9 versions of Nero on this system and 8 on my other system." So, why are you asking why I have my products? As I indicated before, your company leveraged me into keeping my technical support by terminating my support on my previous two products. "Why run the SFC?" Again, you are the one that said that there had to be something wrong with my system. I only used what means I had to determine that. Please move your arguments with Omega Tester to some other page and argue back and forth there.

  • Maybe it is an cultural, ethnic or language thing going on here; but to me everything seems fierce for what this forum is for. I do not know why this OLE business emerged since it is not understandable enough to help get my stuff functioning again. It is on that part of the Microsoft site reserved for developers, which I am not. Over an older technical support issue, I think it was a difficult method of uploading a file to you all, I had uninstalled Nero. Right now I am considering doing that again. I am getting so little done that I am afraid that things will get bad enough to ruin my production programs.

  • All my music is off my computer except for what came with it. My music files are on a network hard drive. They show in 2018 MediaHome though the left hand corner shows some kind of scanning activity. I only have playlist names, no songs under them. Since I fear another crash or interference with my Office programs, I am likely to remove all my Nero products except BackItUp.
