I’m very very confused and dissapointed

imported size of files in Nero Video platinium 2018 is much lmarger compared to window-size

Why is the size a file occupies in nero 2018 video - platinium(creating a bluray or a dvd-video) much, much larger than windows shows..
A file (mp4: youtube-video) is 338 MB. Imported in Nero Video (creating a dvd-video) it is appr. 2-3 as big ; imported in Nero video to create a bluray it is appr. 3.7 GB ( so a 1000-time bigger)?

Why ? ( a bug)
Same is true for mpg-videofiles

  • Looks like I'm the only one in the forum who wants to stick their neck out on this one.

I would say that occurs because the file is decoded and decompressed when inserted into Nero Video. I don't know for sure, technically, why it's different for DVD-Video and Blu-ray disc but, in the former, the file will be encoded to mpeg-2 and, in the latter, it will be encoded to .m2ts. I didn't look at the differences in compression for those formats. The Recording Format Options will also affect the size.

If no one else offers a technical explanation, then you can go here-

and submit the contact form, to get an expert explanation.

If you do that, please let us know the response.

  • patriek,

More details might help. Here is a video showing how the output size varies for differing projects and bitrates (quality):

  • However, the issue here is compression. For instance, even though mpeg-4 is a form of mpeg-2, it has a higher compression ratio than mpeg-2. Since mpeg-2 is used in DVD-Video, a mpeg-4 file used in DVD-Video is going to be larger. As I said earlier, I'm not sure what happens when one encodes to .m2ts. Since the bitrate in the recording format options for blu-ray is larger, I think that also accounts partially for the increased size. I think an expert answer is required. Too bad Mister_M no longer participates in the forum. His knowledge of video is heads above any of us here.

  • That is all good. But what strikes me, and for which I look for an answer, is the large to very large difference between the window-size and the nero-size of a file and the huge difference between the sizes when you choose to make a dvd-video or a bluray ?
Is there an explination for ths? Can I truist the Window-size and is Nero wrong or is the other way around.
Ps I loaaded the same file in DVDFAB ( it does practically the same as NERO) and the sizes are more in line (ofcourse there is some overhead)

  • patriek,

As I attempted to show in the video, it's all about the bitrate.

    Your DVDFab examples:

    801 MB @ 9000 Kbps (between 11 and 12 Kbps per MB)
    1330 MB @ 15000 Kbps (between 11 and 12 Kbps per MB)

    For Nero:

    670 MB @ 8000 Kbps (between 11 and 12 Kbps per MB)
    1300 MB @ 15000 Kbps (between 11 and 12 Kbps per MB)

    Your original .MP4:

    339 MB @ 4013 Kbps (between 11 and 12 Kbps per MB)

    However, there's Nero's SmartEncoding feature:

In this latter case, Nero ignores the bitrate setting essentially copies the source to the output (if it satisfies the requirements for the project type).
