Is it possible to recode directly from Explorer?

can i recode a video file directly from windows Explorer (ie, right click on file), or do I have to put the file into Nero Recode? I recognize that Recode has a lot of options, so my guess is no...

  • Hi michael-

You have guessed correctly. Windows has no capabiltiy to recode files. That's why programs like Recode exist.
    • Thanks Wither, this answers my question.

Food for thought: Prism Video Converter was a program I used before switching to Nero. Once installed, a user could right click on a video file and the first option under "Play" (from Microsoft) was P's video converter feature. This would pull up their application with defaults (destination, coding defaults, etc) already loaded.

I like Nero/Recode better, but it would be nice if Nero added a shortcut like this.

One way to simplify this is to right click on one of your video files and select Open With. If Recode isn't listed, select Default Program. Browse here-

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Nero\Nero 2014\Nero Recode

and open the Recode.exe and then click on OK. That will make Recode the default program for opening a video file when you double click on it. Since most people wouldn't want that, you could reset the default program back to whatever it is you want to open it with. However, Recode should be available in the Open With list whenever you need it.

    Does this help?

    Michael,

As you know, there is a "SendTo" option on the context menu that appears when you right-click a file in File Explorer. You can add Recode to this SendTo menu by copying a Recode shortcut to the "SendTo" folder. Google sendto along with your OS to find instructions.

    Michael,

I added Recode to my SendTo folder and made screenshots.

    1. Find the Recode folder under Nero in your Programs folder.
    2. Right-click on Recode.exe and use the SendTo menu to send a shortcut to your Desktop.
    3. Find your SendTo folder and move the shortcut to it. (This may be hidden. If so, "Show hidden files" in "Folder Options".

This procedure worked for me on Windows XP and now on Windows 8.1. So, I suppose it will work on everything in between.
