Make ISO Image Data Corruption Bug

This has happened for me before, but I thought it might be from my HDD failure!
My ignorance caused a big data loss for me!
I made a ISO image of my vital data as backup.
The data was the code I wrote during the past week, hundreds of code, in .vb & .reg files!
After I make ISO image, I remove the data from disk.
But this bug happened again, my most important .reg file which was a little huge, is written incorrectly, from near half of the file to the end, only space is inserted and my file is damaged in ISO.
I was a Nero customer for years, and I'm so angry because of my data loss and why I used such a crap software, they are just known because they are old.
I know the only thing that the company case is getting new orders, I have seen what a disgusting behavior they have when we submit a bug report and that they don't give a s*t about them, so why I still used that crap to lost one week of my work!
I was using in my new high end rig with a new Samsung 960 Pro 1TB so the only remaining reason is bug in Nero!
My last message on this forum, don't need or expect answer, just wanted to warn others that write your important data with verify if using Nero, and since Nero does not have a verify option for writing ISO image, don't use it or take the risk!

  • I don't know. I looked at the burn options in Burning Rom for the ISO options and they all have "verify written data."

  • Misunderstood, I don't mean write ISO to disk, I mean burn data from disk to ISO image, by selecting Image Recorder instead of disk drive!
I used to backup my data periodically to an ISO image so it's kept safe, there are many files that converting them all to an ISO will protect them from accidentally modifying/deleting or tampering by malware, if you see my message history you'll find that just one of my bug reports are fixed after 3+~ years, just one and that was the most simple one!
Considering that theit company is just working good at sales and just release yearly updates with no real updates to minimum possible updates/fixes (I mean even if there's nothing to update or fix, still new yearly version update is released, but they clearly reject any improvement suggestion I reported, while was really useful) there's no hope that they even look into it!

  • When you save a data disc to ISO, only the first track on the first session on the disc can be saved. I don't know how many sessions are listed on your discs.

If you simply do a copy disc to another disc, there shouldn't be any problems such as those you described. The second disc will be finalized unless you do a multi-session disc and never finish it.

I won't go into your other comments.

  • Sorry but I didn't say I saved a data disc (which seems to be optical) to ISO.
I said I made an ISO from files on my SSD drive, not from optical drive.
New compilation > DVD > Add Files > Select Image Recorder > Burn > Nero prompts to save ISO file on hard drive (SSD) this way an ISO file is created, forget about the rest of my comments, I already started my coding from beginning, now I've got a precious experience.

  • Well, it seems we've honed into what you're actually doing. :)

I got confused by your original comments that "I remove data from the disk" and "I mean burn data from disk to ISO."

I assume you're using Burning Rom. What are you actually selecting when you open it?

I'm going to be cutting grass the rest of the day so I need to get started.

  • Sorry for confusion, yes the only product I have purchased from Nero was always BurningROM, if you remember ~2 decades ago Nero was only a Burning software, for many, the suite is a dll hell giant that will slow down the whole PC and there are much better alternatives around!
BTW, using Burning ROM, make a new DVD, add a folder, select Image Recorder and make ISO image on disc, then I removed the source folder.
As I said it's years that I use this method to make ISO of my vital data, it's much safer, BTW this very very rare bug has happened few times to me (less than 10 times in 6 years), the problem is that some files, I found .reg & .vb to be damaged after some point, internal data is replaced by continues space and my data got corrupted.
I thought it's because of some kinda failure in my HDD which was a high performance Western Digital Black 1TB.
But this time, happened on my new high end rig with a Samsung 960 Pro 1TB SSD, so after investigating any possible causes, I can say I'm 99.99% sure that it's from NeroBR.
That's very unlikely to reproduce, the developer must check underlying data burning code to see on which conditions or (unhandled) exceptions this can occur.
The worst thing in programming is (On Error Resume Next - not our case) or ignoring the exceptions which I'm sure is highly available in Nero BR.
Otherwise I would get errors on such improper writings!
Another suggestion is to add a Verify option for Image Recorder made ISOs as well.
So after burn it compares written files with original ones one by one!
They think when using Image Writer if some error happens, always some exception is thrown! There are always exceptions in development!

  • "make a new DVD" isn't an option when you open Burning Rom. I wanted to know exactly what you select.

What version of Burning Rom are you using? What is your OS.

  • omg, NeroBR 2018, but I remember this has happned since 2015,16&17.
    Windows 10 x64 Enterprise
NeroBR > New Comp. > upper left ComboBox > DVD > New > Add files/folders > Image Recorder - above ComboBox > Burn - Burn > Save ISO on disc
BTW, as I said this must be checked at the development low level, since Nero has its own implementation of Rainbow Books, and it's near 2 decades, the burn engine should be mature, but they are not good at details, there are some obvious signs that makes it clear those developers are not doing with high accuracy and don't care about very details in their coding, find one of my reports about thousands of registry/file entries Nero is making and they simply replied: they don't care!

When each file is read from disc and being written to ISO format image, they should add a verification level check or improve the exception handling or make sure if some error occurs it's being processed not just ignored, in addition to adding a Verify option for Image Recorder ISO file creation as well.

At the end, I'm not using Nero anymore, I'm just writing although I'm 99.9 sure that no one from Nero cares about it, but just for that 0.1% :)

  • Thanks for the information. As you said, there's no verification capability when burning files from the HDD/SDD to the Image Recorder. It only has that when burning to disc (I didn't check it for when the files are on a disc). I never noticed that before. However, it should be including all the files in the compilation unless there's some issue .
