Mass File Save Fail

Backup files to Blu-ray, on Multi Layer discs, If you want to save say 70 files each of 500mb total 35gb do/will you get a 'Fail' as the disc reaches the Layer Change. I had this with DVD DL saving MPG files totaling over 4.2 gb. Something to do with 'Break Point Not Found' if I remember, but it wasted a disc. Has this carried onto Blu-ray. No one I phoned seems to know including Panasonic engineers

  • What is your Nero version?
Do you use Nero BackItUp 2014?
Please contact our tech support team via email techsupport@nero.com.
    • Nero 9 - I just use data file copy to DVD and add them.
As i mentioned below I once tried InCD but that meant the files were 'coded' to nero (arrogance of S/W writers - look at me) and would not run on the DVD player. copied the 20 odd discs back to H/D and wrote them out again. disabled InCD and never have re-enabled it. that was the first time you released InCD back in v6 or 7 was it.
I remember getting the Hat and beach ball.
Another one I had was the DVD ejecting after 30 ish minutes during playback, never did sus that out.
Sorry for the delay, I am disabled and do not get much time to use on emails.
Still prefer the phone - it does not waste as much time and energy as this does !!!

  • As Lindsay referred to, are you actually doing a backup with Backitup or are you simply copying files?

  • Just copying files to DVD won't make them playable in a standalone DVD player unless your player allows you to select individual files. You're creating a data disc.

The question I have is what does copying to Blu-ray have to do with a DVD player?

As far as I know, if you select a DVD-9 when you do the copy operation ought to make using both layers possible. Ditto for blu-ray.

Perhaps it would be best to send an e-mail to tech support.
    • The reason I use DVD as example is that it does not work and no one can tell me if it will work on bluray before I waste time and money on a box of dual layer blueray discs or even triple or quad.
Plus buying software and hardware upgrades that just won't work.
Try saving 5 x 1gb files (mpg2) to a dual layer DVD and see if it sees the layer break if it works tell me the software.
Just record 1/2hr of TV a few times to get the files.
And just copying them to a standalone DVD player works fine on my DVD, most play mpg files now.
This is the point - As far as I know - try it, just because the adverts say it, is my point.
bluray adverts say backup files save HD space 85gb (or whatever) on triple layer.
      Does it work !! 50 x 1.5gb files - will it work.

  • Hey, how do I get the hat and beachball. :)

You didn't say if you have the latest firmware for your optical drive.

Also, what is your version of Nero 9........................ Look in help, about or run the infotool.
    • Hi
The ball and hat/visor were loyalty gifts, I think.
They arrived one day. I have all versions up-to v9.4.44 when I found this out and decided it did what I needed so no need to go any further.
When I get this answered I will buy the latest - if it is the right answer !
It is not a firmware thing its a physical property combined with bad software.
DVD9/Dual Layer splits at 4.xx gb to get to the second layer
if the file is over the 4.xx in size it will not be split in 2 to fit partly on layer 1 and partly on layer 2.
Same thing applies if you have many files and the one file that is being written as you get to the layer break will not be split over the layers.
You Get A Coaster for your cup as it fails with 'cant find layer break' or something like it..
When you render a DVD to disk the S/W splits the video into segments and gives you the split at the right point. I do not want to make a film.
I want to save all-sorts of files to disk - as the propaganda adverts say - Save Hard Drive Space and save over 100gb to Blu-ray.
BUT does it allow for the layers and there break points or not.
As I said before I phoned Pioneer the drive manufacturers and they did not know, and will be stopping manufacture - apparently !
So now I am asking everyone !!
      Try saving a 1gb file renamed file 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
The file 4 will not split with 1/2gb on one layer and 1/2gb on the other
SIMPLY if the S/W looked ahead and said
I have Xgb left on this layer
The next file to write is >Xgb
I Will Force A Layer Break.
      it is so simple.
      I copy write that procedure
Could also work it out at the beginning of the write operation

      Try It with 5 1gb
files (or one copied and renamed 5 times)

  • You have the last update to v9.

I think InCd uses CD-Rom (UDF) for burning.

I still think you should have the latest firmware for your drive if detecting the second layer is an issue.

The only way I could tell is if I could see a copy of the log file from a burn. Since you're likely using either Nero Express or Burning Rom, you could post the contents of the nerohistory.log file. It can be found here-

    C:\Users\"user name"\AppData\Roaming\Nero\Nero 9\Nero Burning ROM
    • Hi
Writing to the second layer is not an issue.
This is the thing with emails - 20min conversation takes 20 emails a fortune in electric and no one actually reads them fully.
If I render a 4hr video it is converted to a DVD Film with its various files etc and that programs for the layer break.
If you write files - any file - do you understand ANY FILE not DVD Films rendered for DVD BUT FILES - spreedsheets, Documents. Clips of news mpeg2 files.
ANY file all mixed together. My hard drive has a folder of business files Data Sheets. Quotes, Drawings, Video Clips, it is 86gb - that is what I want to save
to Blu ray, and many like it.
Anyway If this collection of files runs onto the second layer the software does not split a file over two layers when the end of the layer is reached.
It runs out of room and fails.
The total amount of files may be 6gb but if the 4.xxgb layer does not fall Exactly at the end of one file and start of another (unless your lucky) it fails.
It does not look at the amount of room on the disc and say
The file I am about to write will not fit into the space I have left on this layer so I will force a layer and start writing this file on Layer 2
It just goes on regardless and drives over the cliff. Coaster.

I think it is burning rom and I do a Data File Save
I never use InCd waste of time - a portable media great write anything to it take it with you anywhere transport your files - except we have just encoded them so you cant use them anywhere except your PC and if you supply a routine to load on the other PC - and this can not be done on a DVD player so dont waste time trying to use the files for playing on that.
I disabled it on its first incarnation and have never installed it again. Not sure if it was v6 or 7
It can not be controlled, it is an arrogant piece of software - look at me - I can waste so much time and energy for you - pathetic software.
Bring back the 3in Floppy, in its own case - drag a file drop it on and done.
All you have to worry about is where is the sellotape !

  • I don't have v9 on the system I'm using tonight. Unfortunately, v9 doesn't have the Nero DiscSpan feature which allows you to specify how to treat a file that needs to span a disc layer. I'll have to check the options in v9 for creating a data disc on my other system tomorrow.
