Media home face tagging not loading exif data?

Hi all,
I have been using Picasa for years with face tagging. Changing to other PC made me lose my face tags. Discovered that Picasa can save the face tag info into the picture file. So i thought problem solved.
While i bought Nero suite 2020 i want to use MH for my pictures while it also works with face tagging.
It seems though that the EXIF data in the picture is not loaded into MH. That might cause me to have to re-enter all face tag names again!
So my question is:
Is there a way to let MH load EXIF data for face tagging?
And even better: Can MH save face tags into EXIF data?
Thanx in advance.

  • I can't answer your question about exif-

However, if you click on Timeline, select a photo and click on the "i" icon on the upper right hand side of the menu bar, does it show the tag information correctly?

  • Hi Wither,
    Thanx for answering.
I checked the info panel. It does not show faces in there.
This morning i did some more research on the subject and found a site (Jeffrey's Image Metadata Viewer) to check data from an image.
There i found the information about the faces in the above sample is stored in the XMP part of the picture.
I guess this is not being used by MH.
Would it be useful to put this on a wish list?
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanx in advance.

I didn't expect actual faces to be in the media info section. I just wanted to see if the tag information was there properly. As far as I can tell, it won't display the information for individual faces within a photo in the metadata section. It does display the face name and tag name if I select certain portions of a photo and name a face and then add a tag. I don't have a lot of time today to work with it.

As far as Exif goes, it only applies to certain formats.

My suggestion is to go here-

and submit a support ticket. I'd like to know what they have to say.

  • Thnx for the answer Wither.

Sure, they face tagging function is lovely and working flawlessly. It surprised me that this function was available, because not many foto software offers this. The face info is displayed in the info panel when adding one.

The problem with a lot of software programs is that they store information in their own databases. Probably for speed reasons i guess :-).
Disadvantage is that when moving to another pc you lose this data because these dbases are mostly stored in the AppData folder for the current user of Windows, which are hard to find (and the use unclear) and hard to back-up because files at this folder are often locked or changing a lot (log files f.i.). As a result, when moving to a new pc, you will sometimes have to manually input all data you collected for years once more again. So i was very happy to discover these face data could be stored into the picture file itself. Same goes for location data.

Some software allows to relocate these dbases to f.i. the documents section. So these are available for moving and backup. Outlook mail files f.i. allow this relocation.

Thank you again for sparring about this with me. I will submit a support ticket and enter the results in this thread.

    Greetz Lex.

  • My ticket to support:

    Hi Customer support,

The face tagging function in Media Home surprised me and is a nice feature to begin.

In the years before MH i used Picasa software which lost all data when moving to a new PC. Probably while they use a dbase for this information. I was happy to discover that Picasa was able to store this face info into the according picture file. That makes moving to a new pc keep my face data.

    See enclosed files for example.

My request is: Is there any way to import this face information into MH?

Further: I would suggest adding software to export and import face data (and other as f.e. geo data) to and from picture files, to prevent losing hard work when moving to a new pc, in future versions of the software.

    Regards, Lex Beckman.

    • For information, I think the faces information is stored here-

      C:\Users\"your username"\AppData\Local\Nero\MediaHub.Faces

You should be able to backup the Nero folder and I suggest the Nero_AG folder, in case you have to do something like reinstall windows which would delete those folders. After reinstalling Nero, those folders will resort to the default. Thus, you could then replace them with the backups. Of course, you would have to put all the photos back on to your system and add the folders to the Library.

  • Ty Wither,
I am aware about that and will make back-ups from these folders also.
Btw. I can't check status because i can't find password atm. Have requested new password but up till now no e-mail received. Lol, they have so many different sites now and in the past that i get confused about which goes where, despite my password manager :-). Nero start has my account and i am logged in, but i am gonna wait a bit before hitting forgot my password.

Got an answer last night. Typical service desk answer though:

"Thanks for your reporting and sorry for the inconvenience!
We are sorry that MediaHome currently does not support reading face data from Picasa.
Please add your photos to MediaHome library, and name face in MediaHome, the face info will be write into database. If you work on new PC in the future, you could move all your face data to the new PC. :)
    Thanks for supporting of Nero!
    Have a good day!
    Best Regards,"

So its confirmed there is no way to import the "in pic" data and that the data is saved into a dbase.
It is nice but expected to be able to transfer the database to a new pc, but it makes it impossible to transfer to other software packages. [which is convenient for the software supplier :-)].

Still doubting between using Picasa and making a lot of input effort.
    So far for today.
