Migrating a BackItUp 12 environment to a new PC

I am building a new Windows system on a new PC. I want to be able to migrate my BackItUp environment to the new system. I can install the software on the new system easily enough. All of my backups are stored on an external hard drive. However all the metadata related to the backups and the information about the backup and sync jobs is still on the old system. I assume it is all in a database in one of the Nero folders. Where is the metadata information stored and can it be copied to the new system?

If you're going to be running Win 8.1, be advised that, as of right now, v12 isn't supported in it. It is supported in Win 8.0. I don't know if they're going to update v12 to make it 8.1 compatible. Edit: November 6. According to Nero Employees, v12 is compatable with 8.1.

For most versions of Backitup, all the necessary files for restoring a backup are stored on the target drive. However, there have been occasional problems with that. As a result, I think you're smart to transfer the "metadata" files to your new system. The files are in the two folders in this path-

    C:\Users\"user name"\AppData\Roaming\Nero\Nero 12\Nero BackItUp

    Is that a good answer?

  • Thank you for the information, Wither. I had forgotten that all the backup info is stored in the user section of the Windows drive.

I copied the files over to the new installation and now all the info about the backups is available. The only hitch is that I have to export/import the backup tasks from the old Windows task scheduler to the new one. I think BackItUp creates the task in the Windows task scheduler when the back up job is created. I don't know if editing the backup job in Nero will create a task scheduler entry in Windows. Worth a try before I export/import.

I think I'm saving myself some work... ;-)

    Thanks again for the pointer.

  • If you edit the backup job on the new system, I don't think you need to import the old task scheduler files. To be honest, I don't know how to do that.

  • In the thread that discusses compatability of v12 and v14 with Win 8.1, one Nero employee had said that v12 was compatabile with 8.1 whereas another said it wasn't. The one that said it wasn't, revised his position today so it seems that v12 is Win 8.1 compatable.

As a result, my reply above seems to be incorrect. Just wanted you to know.

  • Thanks for the update. I'm running v12 with 8.1 and it seems to be functioning correctly for what I use it for. Of course if Nero does not support v12 on 8.1, I could be "up a creek without a paddle" if I run into a problem.

BTW, I tried out the free v14, but it doesn't have all the function that v12 has, e.g. drive backup, options on number of backups to keep,... I checked the user manual and it doesn't have and documentation on those functions. Too bad.

  • The free v14 BIU is really dummy downed. You need to buy one of the versions that provide additional cloud storage to get any kind of the capabilities of older versions. I don't have the v14 installed- got to get around to doing that.
