Moving Nero 9 to a PC running Windows 10

Hello everybody, thanks for reading.
I'm replacing my old Windows 7 laptop for a new one running Windows 10.
I'd like to move my Nero 9 to the new laptop. I've read comments of some users saying it won't work on Win10, but somebody else said it does. I don't even know the steps to take to move Nero to a different laptop, I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Luis-

First, make sure you have your serial number written down somewhere.

If you purchased any plug-ins for v9, I suggest you move the installation files to your new system before you get rid of your current system since the plug-ins are no longer available.

Then, uninstall v9 using the Nero General Clean Tool (DON'T use Control Panel).

On the new system, right click on the v9 installation file and select Properties. In the Compatibility tab, set the compatibility mode to Win 7 or earlier. Before you get in there, there's also a box to "run this program as administrator." Check that box. Apply the changes. Then run the installation.

I don't know if you're installing from a disc or if you have an installation file and whether it contains all the v9 updates. You can go to nero.com, downloads, previous products downloads, older versions and download the v9 installation file. I think it downloads at least v9.4.26 which is required for Win 7 compatibility.

Let me know how it turns out.

  • Hi Wither.
    Thanks for your quick reply.
Luckily I thought of keeping the serial number in a safe place when I first installed it years ago :) I also recorded all the plugins on a disc so I think I won't lose nothing important.
I'm installing from a disc but I don't know if the version available on the web will be newer.
All along the years I created some templates for my video menus. Do you know where could I find them in order to also move them to my new laptop?

I'll be working on it all tonight, I'll let you know as soon as I'm (hopefully) finished ;)

  • I don't know when you bought v9 or if you bought it online or in a box, so I can't say what's on your disc. You could install it and, then open Burning Rom and select Cancel. In the Help, click on About............ It will show your version number.

I don't have time right now to look for the location of the templates. I'll look later.

  • I bought it in a box, but besides, it's still installed in my old laptop where I'm typing right now, so, just after a few seconds of search, I've found the versión is 9.4.44.0.
    Just one more question:
After I've followed your steps and installed it in my new laptop, wont there be an activation problem as I had already installed it in another pc previously (my old laptop)?
Don't worry about the templates, please, I hope to be able to find them myself.

  • You have the last version.

I asked you to uninstall it first from your current computer so that you wouldn't encounter the patent activation issue. There's a way to reactivate them, if necessary.

When I think about it, do you need and have serial numbers for the plug-ins? I've never purchased a plug-in.

In regards to the templates, they should be in this path-

    C:\Users\"your username"\Documents\NeroVision\Templates\CE

in a folder with the name you designate as the subcategory when you create the template.

That path may be "My Documents" instead of "Documents." Depends on the OS.

  • I’m frustrated
    Hi Wither.
I followed the steps you gave me, installation started, and then, at forty-something per cent, it suddenly stopped. Windows message showed on screen: "An unexpected error has occurred. Installation has stopped and can't continue. Try restarting your PC and opening the installation file again" .
So I did it. Turned the laptop off and on again, then I clicked on the installation file again, and process started again.
After a while, Windows froze and cursor arrow disappeared from screen. I waited and waited but nothing happened when I pressed any keyboard key or mouse button. I had to turn the laptop off from keeping the ON / OFF key pressed for some seconds.
I turned it on again. The Nero StartSmart icon was on the desktop. I clicked. I saw the list of Nero programs, all with the 'Not Installed' words on their right.
I'm not a bold man when dealing with computers. so I guess I'll start saving money to buy a Nero 18 sometime. Thank you for your time and help.

  • I don't know how long you waited but, the older versions of Nero are notorious for stopping at various points of extracting files and just sitting there. If I recall, 40%, 58% and 67% were the main ones. One needs a lot of patience.

    Please go here-

    C:\Users\"your username"\AppData\Local\Temp

Is there a Nero folder with installation files? If so, you might look in there for the .msi and run it.

  • Hi again Wither and richard.
Sorry for my delay in answering,I didn't expect more replies. Thank you for the interest.
Nothing changed but I've found a very good offer for a Platinum 2018 so I've bought it. I hope I'll be able to install it without problems.
Therefore, let's consider this case as closed. Thank you for your help, time and efforts.
