Nero 14 installation fails and crashes computer

The installation halts with blue DOS window and message "an attempt was made to write to read only memory" plus a lot of stuff but automatic reboot started before I could read it.
Tech support asked for nero support files. After I ran the GetSupport tool the computer failed to start the next time I tried to startup. I had to restore my computer to a date before the latest Nero Installation and running the GetSupport tool.
I have tried to install on another computer with the same result. Nero support has stopped responding.
Can anyone help?

  • Hi Delta Mike,
we checked our database and found the correspondance you refer to,

Here is the last answer from the support team regarding the installation problem:

The provided Support.cab displayed that you are currently working with some very old chipset and graphic card drivers from 2009. Please contact your system manufacturer and update those drivers. Afterwards the product can be installed with out further crash.

We haven't heard back from you since then (regarding the installation issue, other topics yes).

Please check the steps recommened above, In case the installation fails again, please contact us by e-mail, sending a new NeroSupport,CAB file, thanks.

  • All the drivers are up to date according to Microsoft update and the original manufacturers and the problem continues. It is also repeated on the PC where Nero 2014 was previously installed, so I still need an answer to my question please, preferably without guess work crashing my computer again.
Maybe somebody out there has seen this before and knows the answer. That's what the forum is for. If this has happened to you and you found the cause please let me know.

  • From reading the tech support response, I think they mean that you should update the motherboard drivers when referring to chipsets and possibly the onboard graphics. Those aren't Windows drivers. It's like updating the BIOS. I assume you went to NVIDIA or AMD regarding your discrete graphics card drivers.

  • Yes, the automatic driver update tool from Nvidia confirmed they were the latest drivers and the Intel driver update tool listed no updates. I'm reinstalling on the same machine after a clean Windows 7 install so I don't understand why it worked last time. Also I have had the identical problem on 2 different machines.
I found another thread where you suggested a corrupt installation file so I tried downloading again from the website. This time I got "Error applying transforms. Verify that the specified transform paths are valid". I accepted all the defaults in the installation, nothing was modified.
The machine has successfully installed other software such as iTunes.

    • Do I really need to go to such lengths every time I want to install new software? I really don't believe it's drivers. Since I downloaded the installation file again and still got a failure it's unlikely to be a corrupted file.
The worrying thing is that nobody is saying, yeah that happened me. It's rare to have a unique problem and it's not good news. Maybe I will just have to kiss my investment in Nero 2014 goodbye.
Anyway I ran the Get Support utility and sent the cabinet to tech support. Update your drivers is a bit like saying you've got cancer so eat your greens.
      Thanks for trying. DM.
    • Well, I eat my greens and reds and oranges but I'm going for my second biopsy in 9 months for bladder cancer tomorrow.

The message concerning read only memory normally occurs when a driver attempts to read to memory so, it's certainly possible that it's a driver issue. I don't know what the other messages are and, if you aren't getting a BSOD, then I can't look at your dump files. It sure sounds like a system problem. You might try running Malwarebytes to make that kind of thing is not the issue.

Hopefully, the newest .cab file will provide more specific causes of the problem.

  • Got this from Nero support
The provided Support.cab displayed the following Bluescreen code:

    5/22/2015 12:39:51 1 0 1001 BugCheck N/A Family-PC 0x00000050 (0xc72c5000, 0x00000001, 0x82846f73, 0x00000000) C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP 052215-15765-01

To solve this kind of crash, please check the following Microsoft article:

    https://support.microsoft.com/de-de/k...

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

When I found the English version of the Microsoft article the advice was that hotfixes are not safe and Installing the incorrect hotfix can cause damage to your system.
If you are not sure whether the hotfix is the correct one for your system, do not install it.
Hotfixes are included in subsequent service packs that are safer to install through Microsoft Update.
Since my system is fully updated am I wise to install this hotfix?

  • Well what do you know? This was nothing to do with drivers or hotfixes. The same problem was occurring on separate PCs which had never exhibited Bluescreen in years of use. I just reset my computer date to a year ago and disconnected from the internet and everything worked fine. I wonder why?
