Nero 15 Platinum = GARBAGE!

Nero 15 Platinum is absolute garbage! I went back to using my 2009 VERSION of DVDFab to burn and watch DVD's and Windows Media Player to burn and listen to music! Nero must have had focus groups to decide how much can they screw up their easy to use software, make it so it no longer auto-opens anything (namely .vob files for me), and always leads to a ridiculous opening menu that you have to memorize what the programs do because there is no description or the descriptions are so similar - you just have to cross your fingers and click one and it will likely be the wrong one (wasted too much time clicking around). I would reinstall my pirated version of Nero 9 as even that works so much better, but I uninstalled EVERYTHING Nero related and even deleted the emails because I don't want this garbage polluting my system! Sad when 2009 software outperforms Nero 2015 Platinum... Anyone who buys this is a fool, including me - consider yourself warned, I wish someone would have warned me! Gotta go - have more of these reviews to post!

  • It works fine for me on two different computers with two different operating systems.

In regards to opening .vob automatically, what program is associated with it in Control Panel, Default Programs?

  • Hi Wither

I don't know why you bother, obviously Mr Maki does not want any help because he cannot be bothered to find out how Nero 2015 Platinum works and it MUST be Nero that's wrong and not his computer or his inability to use it!

  • Good point. I ignore the flames and try to provide any help I can. Turns out I gave a similar response to Scott in his other thread-

  • Here's the deal. I didn't pay for for Nero to spend time in forums or researching the internet for how to make it work. I used Nero 9 for years without problems. The new setup is ridiculously frustrating. I don't use the burning programs all that often, so it would be nice to just be able to open a user-friendly program where options are easy to navigate when it is time to use it. There should NEVER be a NEED to quit what you are doing just go the forums to find out how make the program work. As for the .vob files the ONLY Open With option available was Nero 15 Platinum, and you select that then it just brings you to that stupid menu screen where you have to try to find which program will open it. Media Home didn't even open anything, just got a splash screen then nothing happened, no idea what that's about (but that is all my fault right?); Nero Media Browser doesn't even show the file I try to open (and there was no +Add button, tool tip, or ANYTHING that you would find in ANY other program that says how or even IF you can add files - YOU HAVE TO GO ONLINE TO FIND OUT = FAIL); and none of the other programs relate. So NO Nero does NOT work as well as Nero 9, DVDFab 6, OR Windows Media Player (Nero 9 used to automatically open the .vob files). I spent more time researching what they did to change things (to try to get the functionality of at least Nero 9), than have with ALL THE PREVIOUS MENTIONED PROGRAMS COMBINED (which is easy to say because I have NEVER had to go online to find out how ANY of those work). So yeah, Nero 15 Platinum is the worst software I have ever wasted my money on. Why should I go online to find instructions when I can just use programs that were much better designed?

Also, you should get out of this forum and see what the reviews are on the sites that offer this product for sale, there are countless reviews similar to mine, and many worse! Some of the most colorful were "Better to spend time committing suicide" and "Awesome program - better than a No-No for hair removal!" (which went on with showing their frustration). Overall, Nero 15 Platinum's reviews average 3/5 at best, you call that successful? Anything below 2.5 is utter failure. You are hovering JUST above that and act as if your software is the best ever?! You guys been creating this software for what 10+ years at least and you can't get an average review above 3/5? It is YOUR fail and the reviews show it. But you are saying that ALL of those reviews are 100% the fault of stupid users and have nothing to do with your poorly designed product, right? If my college grades were that low I would be homeless because no one would hire me because I would have proven I was a failure! Like I said, I have uninstalled all Nero products and deleted all related download emails because this BS is NOT worth it! I just made sure to share my experience with others as a parting gift, and if you actually research it, you will find that my experience is not the exception, it is the rule!

The reviews - not just me - say Nero 15 Platinum = GARBAGE!

  • All you need to do to play it in Nero MediaHome (NMH) is to open NMH and drag and drop the file onto it. You can also add the folder containing the .vob to the NMH Library and it will be available in Photos & Videos for playback. The Library is under Options in NMH.

In regards to "open with", you should go to Control Panel, Default Programs, Associate a file type or protocol with a program. Find the .vob. Change the associated program to NMH by going to this path-

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Nero\KM

    and selecting the mediahome.exe.

Then, anytime you double click on a .vob or select Open With, it will open in NMH.

By the way, you can get the manuals for 2015 at nero.com, Support, Nero 2015.

  • Thank you for your reply and for proving my point. See all those additional instructions you supplied? All completely unnecessary in ANY of the better written programs. They simply have an +Add button. And guess what? There is no need to go online to find out how an +ADD button works... When people use media players the first thing they do is ADD files to it. Why should i have to go in and change my settings just because you all are too lazy/careless to put in an +ADD button...? Autoplay of .vob files in Nero 9 was automatic - but now you took that away. Why? Did it make using your programs too easy? And apparently YOU DID NOT READ MY PREVIOUS POST BECAUSE I WROTE THAT NMH ONLY PRODUCED A SPLASH SCREEN - NOTHING ELSE! No program or window of ANY sort EVER opened so there was NOTHING to drag files to! And somehow that's MY fault...? Again, the reviews say it best!

  • Please note that I'm not a Nero employee.

If you are able to use all the features of every piece of software you install without a little help now and then, you're the man. I've been using PC's for 30 years and I have ever been able to do that.

During the installation of Nero 2015, I think there's the choice to let Nero be associated with every type of file it can open. I don't know if you unchecked that. Even if you didn't, it should have assigned Nero MediaHome to the .vob format.

Originally, Nero Media Home had an opening screen where you could have it scan your whole system or you could add files normally. Trouble is, people were clicking on the automatic function and then bitching about because it took so long to scan. Then I had to tell them how to get it to stop. I don't know why they took away the other option.

I agree that one area that the installation of Nero is lacking is to tell people to run the check for updates after installation and to install the Content pack.

You run the check for updates by starting the Nero Launcher and clicking on Your Product. The Nero ControlCenter will come up and you can go to Update. For the Content pack, click on Creative Content and click on Download. Download and Install. (You can also install the Content pack by just installing all the updates but I recently found that installing the Content pack first is a little easier).

Doing the above will likely resolve you NMH opening problem. If it doesn't, then either we can help or you can send an e-mail to techsupport@nero.com.

  • I apologize for taking my rage out on you :) My beef is with Nero - you are just trying to do your job/help. You are giving good instruction; however, my problem with Nero is we shouldn't even be having this discussion...

During installation, I pay special attention to ANYTHING with a checkbox (programs are always trying to slip data collection, 3rd party crap, or any other junk they can come up with by those not paying attention), so if there was an option to associate all files with Nero I would have made sure it was checked because that was the whole point of installation in the first place - it was to be my new legit goto media program. But instead it turned into this...

Nero USED to work great and be very user friendly, which is why I upgraded (NEVER had an issue figuring things out in Nero 9 - sure there was some trial and error, as with just about any program, but a solution was possible to find). But now those user-friendly days are over and I'm not the only one upset about it.

Thank You, Sir for trying to help - but there is nothing you can do to salvage this train-wreck of a program. There is NOTHING that could make me install any Nero products on any of our machines again. Its just not worth the trouble. I just wish I could wipe this whole experience from MY memory, lol!

    • When it comes to ANY product, if I am at the store browsing the shelves, reading boxes, etc, and I select a product and bring it home and it doesn't work or does not do what was advertised, would I just keep the defective product and waste time contacting the company to see if they can fix or resolve it? NO, of course not, the average consumer would just RETURN the defective product and select something else (in fact, QUALITY products nearly always offer a money-back guarantee because they KNOW they have a good product and returns won't be an issue - what's the Nero policy...? I asked for a refund, and was provided NO such information - so it's basically "we got your money so HAHA!"). Do you get a lecture from the store when you try to return it that you should have wasted more time going online to resolve the defective product? No, because that is the market. If a product doesn't do what it advertises, then it deserves to be returned and replaced with a product that does what it advertises it will do. Why should Nero get a free pass?

At the same time I purchases Nero (because I had plans for bigger projects) I was looking for an upgrade for DVDFab to rip DVDs into other formats to put on our portable devices. So I purchased DVDCloner 2015, which also came with Open DVD Ripper Lite and Stream Cloner light. I've been using all 3 without issue! Never really used programs like those (especially Stream Cloner which lets you record any and all online activity) so there was a bit of a learning curve, but it all ended up being self-explanatory (maybe why their reviews are 4/5 or 5/5; my mistake was ignoring Nero's lousy reviews based on my previous Nero 9 experience). So now that's 6 examples of other related programs that can be used without having to go online,or into forums to figure out how to use basic functions.

Where is your defense for the universally poor reviews?
    • Problem is- most stores won't let a person return opened software. Right now, I don't know what's defective and doesn't work. You've already uninstalled it so it's a mute point. I'll sign out of this thread because I'm just here to help people and they're waiting. I haven't gotten to the German forum for a day.
