Nero 8 Missing "HELP".chm files - Available Anywhere?

I am reinstalling Nero 8 after a recent HDD failure. Upon successful completion, I noticed that although all the various "HELP".chm files appeared to be present, their respective content as not. All contained a message about reducing download size and contained a link to get these files. Nero 8 was a purchased download, I originally had Nero 6 installed from a disc.

Anyway... the link: http://www.nero.com/link.php?topic_id...
doesn't work. It has been many moons since I originally installed this software and I can't recall how/if it worked back in the day.

Are these .chm help files gone with the wind? Are the archived anywhere?

Thx, TomQ

  • Hello Again,

I'm impressed, a swift, short & sweet reply. Thanks Omega Tester!!!

Didn't think this old material would have been maintained. Kudos to Nero AG!

A little tip that may help make using the help files a little easier-

When you install v8, the help files (.chm format) are installed in this folder-

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Nero\Help

on a 64 bit system. They would be in C:\Program Files\Nero\Help, on a 32 bit system.

The problem with that is when you click on Help, in an individual app, the app won't access that folder and you'll get some message about it.

What one has to do is move or copy a help file from that folder to the folder for the corresponding app. The individual app folders are in C:\Program Files (x86)\Nero\Nero 8\ (or the alternate path). Nero even has a utility file for doing that but I can't remember its name and didn't find it when I did a cursory look for it. Once done, you will be able to open the help file from within an app.

I don't think it will work with .pdf files (I didn't download and open one of the Help .zip files to see what format was in them). The major difference between the .pdf and .chm files is that the former contains more graphics.

  • Hello Wither 1,

Thanks for the reply! Here is the scenario I found:

After Installation of Nero 8 download:
    Start - Programs - Nero 8 - Nero Manuals - "Nero a".chm file
    .
    .
    "Nero z".chm file

    Properties for "Nero a".chm file:

    C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 8\"Nero a"\"Nero a".chm file - etc...

After replacing each generic .chm file with the true file,
downloaded at Omega Tester's direction, all is well from within
the app and from the Start Menu.

Oddly, I was able to locate a file I downloaded back in 2008: "Nero8_pdf_Enu.exe"
Executing it placed "Nero a -> z".pdf files in the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\Nero\Manuals

Now I have both the chm & pdf files... perfect!

My thought is that: Start - Programs - Nero 8 - Nero Manuals
should point to the pdf files and the app point to the chm files.
This is easily doable but I guess it's more a matter of personal preference.

Anywho, I am surprised at the response to my outdated inquiry.
As I had mentioned, I haven't had to worry about setup or the program since
    it was originally installed.

This was/is used on an old workhorse WinXP machine. Until the HDD went south,
it worked just fine for audio/video extraction, basic editing and burning duties.
Like any antique machine, finding parts can be a pain. Although all my software
was/is legit, resurrecting the various registration, serial & upgrade codes
took some digging. Then there are all the little nuances, like this one.
Being a software pack rat has its benefits.

    Thanks Again All,
    TomQ

  • I'm glad everything is working.

Open Burning Rom and select Cancel. In Help, click on About.......... What is the version number?
