Nero Burming Rom V15.0.25 no longer burns Blu Ray

Couple of days ago was able to burn a blu ray disk. Now it errors on write. I tried a couple of discs from the batch to no avail. I tried doing a BDDL disc, same problem. The last attempt's log is below.

  • Should note that the BD drive has was new out of the box when I installed it about 2-3 months ago.

  • Hmm. No ideas from Nero? I saw someone had posted replacing their sata cables did the trick - tried that. Nope. Tried moving to another sata port. Nope. So, anyone out there have any ideas why it would all of a sudden stop working on writing blu-ray discs, but I can still write DVDs?

  • I have the same drive but I'm using the 1.01 firmware vice the 1.03 you have. Other people have had problems using the 1.03 so I've never updated it.

Can you try a burn at 2x?

  • 2x is not even available in the drop down list, and cannot type over it. Tried 6x - got illegal disc message. I never upgraded the firmware on this drive. It worked for about 2-3 months - wrote a few BD, but not tons so doubt I 'wore it out'. But why would I be able to write for a couple of months then all of a sudden I can't? But can still do DVDs.

I know this model is apparently not a 'current' model - it is a few years old, even the firmware is a few years old. Maybe I should just buy a BETTER brand.

  • I've had mine since it first came out and don't have a problem with it. Nothing wrong with the LG brand.

I'm not sure but it looks like you're burning a data disc in Burning Rom. If so, are you selecting Blu-ray (UDF) when you open Burning Rom? I'm not trying to insult your intelligence. I'm just bothered by something in the log. I also want to try a burn the same way you are to look at its log.

  • Yes, UDF (as you can see in the log about a screens worth down from the top). BDs that I have bought I many times convert to video file format so that I can load onto my iPad to watch on my 1 hour bus ride, but I store them on a BD. It does not seem related to what HD I put the files on to that I am reading from. It does not matter SL or DL - they both fail. I do not believe it is the brand because I went through half the stack before it started failing, plus my DL disks are a different brand.

What are you seeing that you are bothered by? I have not, to my awareness, changed any settings between when I was writing and when I could not.

One thing that is of note - I am not using an AMD chip, I have an Intel CPU i7 3770 3.4ghz. So the log is reporting the wrong CPU.

  • Thought I would try something - I tried writing via Windows system - if failed there as well. Not sure if Windows 7 is able to write to BD or not anyway.

  • I just have a minute- the firmware in the drives contains software to detect copy protection. If you're converting commercial discs to a file format, it may not be eliminating whatever the markers are for copy protection. Sometimes, Nero picks it up and other times it doesn't.

    Talk to you later.

  • Possible. But on all my attempts to write - with different files? I do not recall if I tried just a bunch of my own files - will try.

I am using Leawo BD Ripper for the conversion.

I went and got another BD writer - ASUS. It is working. As of now the LG drive is totally disconnected - will reconnect later and try doing just a backup of a bunch of files.

  • reconnected - tried just a bunch of pictures files - still failed. So, guess it is not copy protection - unless my drive is permanently set to BD read only mode. And how would that happen?

  • The thing that bothered me in the log is that is says "Finalize CD: True"

That shouldn't be happening if you have selected Blu-ray (UDF) when you opened Burning Rom. It recognizes your disc and it's characteristics but fails with the media error. I'm wondering if it things it's burning to a CD. The other thing that bothers me is that you said that you couldn't burn to it with Windows.

I tried a similar burn on my Win 7 system with a different drive and a BD-RE. Unfortunately, I got a power calibration error during the burn so I've got a problem with my drive. However, the Finalize CD was False in the log before the failure.

When you go to burn a compilation and select Burn Now, select Settings in the next dialogue box. Make sure that Write is checkmarked and "Determined maximum speed" is checkmarked but uncheck Finalize if it's checked.

  • I can try that - though I have always finalized and closed the disc when I was done writting. Usually because I do not plan to write anything else to it.

    It failed with finalized unchecked.

The log for one that worked has finalize cd as well - so my guess is that is what the program is written to display - all the time. It is not variable based on the type of media - may have changed in more current versions.

  • I think it will finalize the disc unless you have selected multisession.

Would you post the log for the latest burn? If the log has more than one burn on it, just give me the part for the latest.

Are you able to burn to your hard drive, instead of a disc?

  • I don't think we'll be able to pinpoint the problem with the LG. The fact that you couldn't burn to it with Windows says there's a problem with it. Could be a number of causes that we can't explore easily. Normally drive problems are easily seen in the log. As I mentioned, I got a power calibration error last night when I tried to burn to the RE disc. That would normally say there's something wrong with the drive but, I find that the disc is unusable and could have caused that error.

Since the burn works with the new drive, the problem doesn't appear to be with Nero. Sounds like you have a good solution.

  • That's what I was thinking at first as well - since it worked for a while with Nero. Can still read Blu-Ray so not a total loss. Just expect more from a drive that costs $130. Unfortunately I cannot locate the box or the receipt from the store I picked it up from. But was hoping that maybe there was something else going on.

  • I didn't know it would read a disc. Maybe the problem I alluded to earlier is a write problem and the reason I never updated my firmware. I don't think you can go back to earlier firmware with a drive. You can with the driver. I thought about disabling the driver and then rebooting the system but kind of ruled that out because of the media error. Might not hurt to try.

  • I have already done that in effect - I booted without it attached, wrote to the new drive to test it, then reattached the old one and tried again. No change. Amazing how many different solutions there are to (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR) - from media brand (I've tried three brands and no change), speed - writing at the lowest speed. Only thing I have not tried was re-installing. Been thinking of upgrading soon anyway.

  • I think you covered all the bases with that drive.

I was thinking about your not being able to find the box or receipt for your drive. If you registered it, then you could approach LG directly about it. I buy that kind of stuff with a credit card and, even though I save receipts for it, my girl also keeps the billing notices from the credit card company for a year. Since the bill lists where and when the charge was made, the store ought to accept it as proof of purchase.

    Stay!
I pulled into the crowded parking lot at the local shopping center and rolled down the car windows to make sure my Labrador Retriever Pup had fresh air.

She was stretched full-out on the back seat and I wanted to impress upon her that she must remain there.

I walked to the curb backward, pointing my finger at the car and saying emphatically,

"Now you stay. Do you hear me?"

    "Stay! Stay!"

The driver of a nearby car, a pretty young blonde, gave me a strange look and said, (this is going to hurt...read on)

"Why don't you just put it in 'Park'?"
