Arrrgh.
Something is stopping my Nero Burning ROM being able to write discs.
I have used it fine in the past on this same PC.
(It's a Windows 10 Pro 64 bit system, Nero 2020, an LG internal BluRay R/W drive.
I've been using Nero for nearly two decades, since Windows 98...
I've successfully burnt discs on this same PC.
I'm guessing some new Windows security permission is blocking Nero's write access to the optical drive: the Nero log file says it can't write to disc.
Any suggestions?

Here's the log file
Windows 'Ransomeware Protection' (Controlled Folder Access) was blocking Nero.exe, but I enabled it... didn't help though.

It looks like you're using Burning Rom and burning an ISO. Is that correct?
For the errors you're getting, the most common cause is that the write speed is to high. I suggest using 10x (or less, if you're already using 10x).
I asked about where you got it because v2020 isn't supposed to have a serial number, if you bought it from Nero. Did you buy the whole suite? -
-
I don't think so wither,
I set the write speed to 16x, as that's what the discs I was using (Verbatim) are branded with as their optimum speed.
The drive itself and the computer's busses are capable of streaming the data orders of magnitude faster than that.
I've also written the the same media in the same drive in the same PC just weeks ago, with 'Secure surface scan' showing zero write errors.
It looked more to me like someone that OS level is preventing nero.exe from writing data the drive.
It writes the 'lead in' OK but then it's blocked from writing the file data.
However whatever's doing the blocking isn't passing any kind of intelligent error to Nero, so Nero just says 'can't write to disk' without further explanation. -
-
You're getting a "medium error." The normal recommended solution for that is to either try a different disc, a different batch of discs or a different brand of discs but it's often caused by the write speed being too high. Never mind what Verbatim says about the optimum write speed. Also, some drives don't work well with certain brands of disks but I don't think that's the problem here.
I have the same drive as you do but I'm using firmware v1.01 because some people have had burning problems using v1.03, which you have. -
-
Um OK I can try some different discs, but given that I've already stated that I've successfully burned on the same discs in the same drive at the same speed on the same PC with the same OS and the same version of Nero, I don't quite follow your logic :)
-
I've been in the forum almost every day for going on 12 years and have seen that error probably in the neighborhood of 1000 times. The normal solutions I provided are what tech support would give you. Reducing the write speed is the least expensive option. What you can do to avoid wasting discs while testing is to burn to the Image Recorder.
You never did say if you're burning an ISO and, if you are, you've selected DVD ROM-ISO in Burning Rom. -
-
-
-
-
-
-
I've tried writing to both DVD ISO and to UDF. Writes fine to the Image Recorder but refuses with real discs.
-
-
OK, I tried burning the same project to the same media but with 8x selected as the write speed, instead of 16x. (Those are the only two options the dialog offers).
I initially thought it was failing in the same way (because, after it wrote the lead-in, it then took several minutes before the progress bar moved any further and it wrote any data tracks). But it actually completed fine!
So, I must apologise for my skepticism: Wither, your advice was spot on. Thank you :)
(I still remain surprised that a reputable brand of media that is labelled as '16x speed' will no longer work at 16x speed... but hey)
Here's what the VSO Inspector utility says about the blank disc:
-
-
I have no idea why the firmware/Windows drivers decides that a disc can't be burned at it's designed speed. I can only try to find a solution to the symptoms of these kinds of problems. It might sometime mysteriously begin burning again at 16x.
I'm glad your problem is solved.
Enjoy! -
