I’m frustrated

Nero Media Home is not able to fix garbage titles of WMA songs.

Nero Media Home displays incorrect album, song title and author. While trying to fix tchem Nero displays error "Following files could not be updated because they are write protected: ...". Of course files are not protected, can be easily moved and deleted, but Nero is not able to fix garbage titles of WMA songs.

I am frustrated because half of my songs get automatically garbage titles without my request. I have original CDDA disks with all box, covers, booklet and detail description of authors and artists and I KNOW who artists are, but Nero displays completely different song titles which makes playing almost impossible. I have manually fixed plenty of them but fixing the rest seems impossible. Additionally Windows automatically downloads bogus (completely wrong) album covers to these songs folder. I delete them regularly and replace with the correct ones. I am NOT going to memorize or create my Excel with mappings between false song titles and correct versions just only to be able to find and play them!

  • Hi Lew2-

I don't have time to chase copy protection for particular files.

You can click on Options, Audio and uncheck the box to use GraceNote. Does that help?

  • Thank you Wither 1 for trying to help me.
I am sorry. "Tchem" is my spelling mistake of the word "them". I wanted to fix it, but could not find option to edit my own post after publishing.

Of course I disabled this GraceNote as soon as I installed Nero. In my opinion it is useless service if it has so low rate of correct data:

The strange thing is that I was able to fix titles and authors of remaining 11 songs from the same album (for this album 100% titles were incorrect), but this one is very resistant to any update. I cannot update information neither using "Get song information" (often Match2 or Match3 is correct) nor using manual "Edit song information". Once I finish edit the message about write protection as above is displayed. I was able to fix manually many other albums, but such problematic song happens. This song is an example.
For listening music I never use original CD, and always copy song to disk or to another CD. According to license agreement of music CD I can make one copy to my private usage. I don't want to hear spinning CD drive, and I don't want to scratch original CD. I tried to copy music using Nero Disk to Device, also used CyberLink Power2Go, and tried to create both wma and mp3 files and no success in fixing this title.

I have an original music CD, full version of Nero 2014. I don't think I need to purchase Gracenote service, do I?
Is this Nero, Gracenote or Windows problem?

  • Since you have Gracenote disabled, I don't know what's giving you the garbage titles. Gracenote is the only thing in Nero that looks things up in a database. That's why you get nothing when you try to "get song information".

How are you copying the CD to your hard drive?

  • Hi Wither 1. Thanks for quick response.

It is not true that I get "nothing" when I use "Get song information". I get full data when I use option "Get song information". Before using this option the file already has assigned the same information what is received as a "Best match". Of course everything is completely wrong: album, title, artist, genre. So, I choose Match2 or Match3 which is usually correct or I edit data manually. And the real problem is in the moment when I try to SAVE this Match2 or Match3 data and assign to the song. I also try to edit data manually and also the problem is when I want to persist manually edited data. So, effectively I am not able to fix incorrect song information in any way. Any other ideas?

I copy to hard drive in one of the below methods:
    1) Using Nero Disc to Device.
    2) Using CyberLink Power2Go/Rip Audio.

  • I don't know how NMH is giving you matches when Gracenote isn't enabled. I'd like to see a screenshot of that.

Open Burning Rom and click on New. In the Extras tab, select Save Audio Tracks. Select your CD. Does it read the disc correctly? If so, can you save any tracks? Note that there is also a Gracenote option in Burning Rom.

  • Hi Wither 1,
The demo to download gracenote information while still having it disabled is here:
    Get Gracenote

I have disabled Gracenote in Nero Burning ROM. It had been enabled, but I don't know if it could affect Nero Disk to Device.

When I select disk using Burning ROM I get no information about album/artist/title:
"Unknown Artist - Unknown Album", which is correct. The created file receives title like:"09 - Unknown Title - Unknown Artist.mp3", which is good. The small problem of Nero Burning ROM is that it cannot produce WMA, only MP3.

Then when I try to assign manually artists/titles to files using Nero Media Home, I get the error about write protection as at the beginning of this post. However, I was able to modify author information using Windows Media Center, which inclines me that problem is inside Nero Media Home.

  • Thanks for the reply. I see there are several formats, but WMA is not among them. That is why I said the lack of WMA output in Nero Burning ROM was a small problem which could be bypassed. I can create pure, uncompressed WAVE file, then convert it to WMA using Nero Recode, although it is a two-step process.

Did you watch screencast with downloading Gracenote data while having Gracenote option unchecked?

  • Hi Lew-

When I click on that link, I get a blank page without errors.

You can change the information such as song title and artist in Burning Rom.

I tried changing the album name in NMH for a audio CD which I know is copy protected (Burning Rom tells me so). I had turned off Gracenote. It worked. I then enabled Gracenote and it worked.

Since I don't have your disc, there's no way to reproduce your problem in a meaningful way. Are you able to import the disc into NMH? I find it interesting that you're using A:\. Are your files on a floppy disc?

You should probably send an e-mail to techsupport@nero.com.

  • Hi Wither 1

    1) The link is to mp4 movie with recorded NMH session. Could you right click and save this mp4 file to your local disc? I can convert mp4 to any other format if you prefer.

    2) It looks like my disc is not copy protected. It is original disc with printed copyright labels. I don't have any copyright warning.

    3) I was able to change title of problematic song in Nero Burning ROM:

Later modification in NMH is impossible.

    4) My disk A: is just one of the installed SSD drives. It is Intel X25M 80GB. I don't have floppy drive. You can change assigned letter in Computer Management/Disk Management. I have 4 fixed disks installed and several mapped network drives, so I start from A:.

    Thanks.

  • I looked at your mpeg. Did you notice it says powered by Gracenote even though Gracenote is disabled in the options. It's the only way you can get the suggestions. NMH itself doesn't have a database.

I just found it interesting that someone uses the A: drive for a volume other than a floppy disc. When I ordered my desktop from cyberpowerpc, I specified a floppy drive because I have some old floppy discs. On the other hand, it brought to light that you're not trying to get the music off a CD. That's what I thought you were doing.

  • 1) Using Gracenote by NMH when it is disabled is inconsistent behavior.
    2) Impossibility to save song information is a bug in NMH. It is strange that all other songs from the same album can be easily updated, but song number 9 not.
Should I send email to Nero support with bug report? Aren't you Nero representative?
    3) I don't play music from CD, because it is too loud (spinning drive). I always play music from SSD quiet drive. (I have also very quite Zalman cooling system - very large fan and radiator occupying almost the whole chassis).
    4) I can send you an image of CD (ISO, NRG) for diagnosis, but cannot publish in a public place because somebody could charge me.

  • Sure, send them an e-mail. I mentioned the address for tech support a few posts ago. I don't know how the Gracenote gets invoked when it's disabled. I could be wrong about the database.

You could upload the .nrg to filedropper.com and post the link here. I doubt that many people are reading this thread. What I can do is download it without replying until about 11 tonight (It's 6 PM right now) and you could edit the post to delete the link at that time.

  • I am sorry, I am in EU time zone.

Please try to copy to hard drive to MP3 or WMA using any tool, then try to use NMH to modify data for song number 9.

  • Hi Lew-

I downloaded your .nrg and burned it to disc.

    Getting some really strange behavior.

I opened the CD in NMH and then elected to import track 9 using Import Track. It created an album with what I think is the correct artist. Take a look at this screenshot. Is everything correct?

I then tried changing various things in the media info. Worked great. No errors. Note that Gracenote was enabled.

The strange things are that if I import the whole CD or another track off the CD, it only gives me all that "unknown artist, song, etc.". Even in those instances, I can change things without error.

Does this look correct? Note that the track numbers shown in the "get song information" don't correspond with the track number I click on.

  • Hi Wither 1,
Thank you for your time spent on investigation. Everything on your screenshots is very correct and song number 9 is correct. The correct artist is "Poznanskie Slowiki" as on your screenshots while I always get incorrect "Grazyna Auguscik" and I get album cover for Auguscik's album. I also experience misnumbering of song numbers. When RIP using Nero Disc to Device it also mixes song titles and numbers as well - I see some title but different song is played. Numbers are always mixed as in your case.
Do you think the problem is with CD or with my installation of Nero 2014?
    I have Nero 2014 Platinum.
One more ask for you: I want to ensure if you can manually modify data for song number 9 after converting to WMA or MP3?

  • I don't think I elected to get the album cover.

I can modify the data for 9 and all others.

One thing about the track numbering is that, I did two imports using both Import CD and Import Tracks. I think that NMH mixed the two together since all tracks are shown in duplicate.

As I mentioned, Gracenote was enabled throughout this. I don't know why you're getting different information than I am.

I also saved the tracks using Burning Rom. I didn't try to do anything with those. For some reason they're not showing up in NMH even thought the folder I saved to is in the Library. I need to take a look at that.

  • Since you're getting the wrong artist for this album, I suspect that's the cause of this.

I think you should discuss it with tech support.

Happy New Year to you also. I'm going to my neighbor's house in half an hour for beer, pizza and movies. I won't be back into the forum until next year (tomorrow). Can't believe we're into 2015 already.

  • I had and solved this problem. it is sort of a bug in the software. I'm running Nero v14 Platinum installed 2014 that came with Nero Media Home v1.22.5700. In my case the problem had nothing to do with file permissions. When you click "open" and open a folder and select a bunch of *.mp3 files Nero likes to automatically start playing the first song. In other cases you might have hit the space bar by accident. Now if you try to modify a song that is currently playing you will get the error: "Following files could not be updated because they are write protected".

    SOLUTION:
    1. click pause.
    2. double click a different song to "unlock" the song that was playing. Now it will update.

To summarize. The file can be playing but even after hitting pause the fact that it was just being played means nero will not release its file lock UNTIL you play a different song. Now that file will be locked and un-writable.

  • The only time it does that to me is when I try to alter the information for a file that has been ripped from a CD. Up until about 2011- 2012, almost all mp3 files were copy protected. That would still apply today, if a file was purchased. I didn't have to play and pause a file for the message to come up.

  • mp3 files have never supported copy protection. It is not possible for an mp3 file to be locked or copy protected. Also, if you bother to read what I have written you would see that I was still able to update the file.
