Nero MediaHome From Platinum 2019 Reliability

Nero MediaHome from Nero Platinum 2019 crashes shortly after starting the application. It crashes consistently upon startup and does not work at all. I have the latest updates from ncc.exe installed. Does this work for anyone at all, or is it just me this is unreliable for? This is the latest Windows 10 Professional 64-bit official release from Microsoft.

  • Back during Beta testing, I had a similar problem in which I would need to start it twice to get it to run. That's in Win 7. More recently, it would say that it was "Loading" and would go on forever. I was able to stop that behavior but you can't get that far.

I suggest opening something like Burning Rom and in the Live Guide, report the problem using Report Issues.

By the way, did you ever have an older version of Nero installed?

  • Thanks for the response. I had no previous versions of Nero installed at all, and this was a new Windows 10 installation.

I did open a support ticket and included crash dump attachments. This issue remains unresolved at this point. I was curious if I was the only one facing this issue. For me it crashes and closes while showing "Indexing faces" in the status bar. This application forced itself to be the default player for many media files. Fortunately Windows 10 does not open it by default, and I forced the default handler to be something else that does not crash.

I used older versions of Nero, but I stopped upgrading awhile back. I had licenses back when it was Nero Ultra, and I have a license key code for version 8. It also looks like I have a license code for Nero Multimedia Suite 10 too. I stopped upgrading after this version.

  • If you can get it to run that far, click on Options and then Library. Is anything listed in the Library?

Also, do you have any external drives attached?

  • I starts up, lasts for a few seconds, crashes then closes. I can do absolutely nothing. The app is completely frozen and unresponsive while it shows indexing faces. It then closes from crashing.

  • That's strange. It doesn't index faces until it has loaded files and that usually takes a while. There's a way to reset it but I'm going to let tech support tell you what to do. Let me know how it turns out.

  • tech support is telling me development cannot fix it. They state it is crashing in the facial recognition module, but they cannot provide a build that fixes it. They state it is something specific to my machine.

That means there is a bug in the code that they have no idea how to address. I am not willing to send them content on my computer; however, I offered to install a version that logs information so they know where the code defect is to fix. There is no response to this so far.

  • Did they ask you for the Nero Support Cab file? Most of these problems are normally system specific but they wouldn't be able to tell what it is specifically without that file.

  • I sent that cab quite awhile ago. That is the first thing they ask for.

There's nothing non standard in my system though, and all my drivers are up to date.

I actually have no idea what Nero is doing attempting to recognize faces (?). I never even knew this was a feature. I think it needs to sit in the oven a little bit longer.

  • Would you post their response?

NMH attempts to assign Faces to photos and then organize common faces as a group.

    Here's a description about faces-

The Faces tab in the photo and video browsing screen lists all photos with detected and recognized named faces in stack groups sorted by the people in your pictures. You can also assign names to listed suggestions of unnamed persons (lower area of the screen). In addition, you can just drag these thumbnails or stacks from the list of unnamed persons to the stacks of already recognized and named faces.
Face recognition makes it easy for you to find photos of people you are looking for to e.g. create personalized slide shows. If Nero MediaHome has not detected any faces on your photos yet, the screen displays a short introduction on Nero MediaHome Faces. After Nero MediaHome has detected faces on your photos, you can start assigning names to single thumbnails or stacks.

If you double-click a stack in the overview, all confirmed photos of a tagged face as well as additional suggestions are listed in a single person browsing view. You can accept or decline a suggestion or assign photos to other persons. Clicking the Confirm All button (on the right) accepts all suggested photos. Clicking the All Faces button in the upper left of the tab returns to the overview.
If Nero MediaHome Faces does not recognize the face of an already tagged person on a photo, you can add the missing photo manually in the Editing Photos screen.
Just like on the Timeline tab, if you hover over a photo or stack, an
icon is displayed in the upper left corner. Enable the icon to mark the item. This way, you can make a selection. Click the Marked entry below the Photos & Videos main entry (in the navigation tree on the left) to display only your list of marked items."

Note that the screen shot is for an older version of NMH.

  • Thanks so much for providing details of the faces feature. This actually does not apply to my needs, and my version included with NMH 2019 is crashing related to its processing. A fix is still being worked on.

I just recently received a solution to prevent the crashing. I had recorded a video of launching NMH showing what the screen looks like when it crashes. I sent the link to my video to support (they had asked for screenshot, but I recorded a video showing all behavior). After review of this video, the issue seems to have been identified. Support had sent me a replacement MediaHub.1.db file after I backed up the one on my C: drive. With this replacement file in place, NMH no longer crashes. I have it running right now. The issue seems to be related to this file. How it got created in a bad state is the next piece of the puzzle for a solution. However, with this manual replacement, the software now works.

  • MediaHome now launches and I can use it to play audio files stored on my NAS. Unfortunately, it does not appear to support UNC paths. Entering a valid one containing the location of my audio files does not work. I also cannot add a UNC path as a library folder. I think this is something that needs work. In order to add a network location, it looks like I will be forced to map a network drive.

  • Based on the response I am getting from support, I have to map a network drive. Nero MediaHome is the only new software that I have installed on my computer that cannot handle a UNC path.

This needs work. Mapping of network drives is not a solution for me, because I would have to map four different network drives just to use this software. I am not sure how this got through beta testing without someone rejecting this.

  • I am using DB Browser for SQLite (https://sqlitebrowser.org/dl/) to see if I can change paths to be UNC paths in the PathMapper.db SQLite database. Perhaps it will work, and Nero simply does not allow the entry of a UNC path. I will find out shortly..

  • The paths from the options are not stored in PathMapper.db at all. They are stored in MediaHub.1.db SQLite database. I am figuring out which table contains the music folder and will try changing data using DB Browser for SQLite.

If only Nero allowed me to enter a UNC path...

  • My initial attempts were not successful. I found the table that stores the media location configuration. It is FolderConfiguration in the MediaHub.1.db database. All folders from options are stored in this table. The column of the table that holds the specific folder is LocalPath. I tried replacing the contents with a UNC network path then committed my changes. Next I restarted MediaHome, and I do see my change in options from the tooltip over the config item. It shows the UNC path I set. However, MediaHome is not showing any contents after making the change to the database table. I do not see a way to force a refresh.

  • Since you had gone to tech support, I shied away from our usual suggestion to rename the Nero_AG and Nero folders in the AppData\Local folder and then letting NMH rebuild them in order for NMH to run properly. Of course, that removes all the files from the Library so one needs to manually add the desired folders back to the Library unless one uses the Automatic function. I never tried copying the .db file from the renamed folders back to the new one. However, that wouldn't help you in regards to the modification you made to the .db. The latest versions of NMH allow one to make a copy of the Library before making changes to those folders. That can take quite a bit of time, depending on how many folders\drives that are in the Library.

As I understand UNC paths (I'm close to getting over my head here), you would need to map the drives to use a UNC path, as suggested by tech support.

  • As I stated, this app needs work to be brought up to modern times. Freely available software that includes both media player (audio and video) has built-in support for a UNC path: VLC, MusicBee, iTunes, and many many more.

  • Sorry, but no.

Mapping network drives under Windows was the way of old. Software has advanced forward (except for those stuck in the Windows 95/98 days).

  • The section I mentioned, as I understand it, doesn't require you to map the drives. It says to "maintain a list of the computers on the Network." I don't know how one does that.

  • Network Attached Storage boxes are common self-contained storage servers. They usually run their own operating systems and allow you to automatically create network shares for data. I know of no NAS that recent versions of Windows will automatically display shares for. Microsoft intentionally made changes so that they are not automatically visible. This is by design.

A long time ago I used to be able to automatically display network shares from my NAS. Microsoft made changes with newer Windows to prevent it from automatically being seen.

I have no control over this. Only outdated apps that do not support UNC paths have issues.
