Nero Slideshow Irritation

I'm trying to create a slide-show of holiday photos to burn onto DVD. I'm using Nero 2018 and Windows 10.
I'm using 'Keep Source Quality' setting in the Recording Format Options.
But, when I view the disc after burning the photos seemed to have not only degraded in quality (despite the setting being 'Keep Source Quality') but also the photos seem to be darker.
I have set each photo to a duration of 5 seconds but there are some pics which I would like to skip to the next pic sooner than 5 seconds by pressing the 'skip' or 'next' button on my DVD remote control.
I have checked/ticked the box 'Enable Forward And Backward Jump During Playback' but when I click/press the 'skip/next' button on my DVD remote instead of just jumping to the next pic the slideshow simply goes back to the Menu.
Why ?
How do I get to the point where I can skip a photo after say, 2 or 3 seconds and move onto the next one. It's worked with previous slideshows so I know it can be done.
Maybe that was with Nero 7 though (Windows XP Home) which seems to be better at slideshows than Nero 2018.
Please help.

This is what I saw when I tried to upload the .VOB file.
Not sure what you actually want.

  • Also, is there a way to Undo Remove Black Bars in bulk ? Otherwise I'll have to do it here for 1,046 images one by one - which as you can imagine would be laborious at best. The suggestion on how to do this made in an earlier post doesn't work.

  • This is strange. Look at the blue bar. All I did was 'Remove All Special Effects' in each category here and the blue bar went from 'full up' in the 'fit-to-disc' setting to this. I changed it to 'High Quality' and here is where the blue bar is. As you can see there is 1190 images here set at 5 seconds each. Plenty room for many more it seems. Could the special effects I had been using causing this problem all along ?

  • It seems though that as I add more categories/folders I have to select 'Remove All Special Effects' each time, when what I would rather have is these special effects not being there in the first instance. So, how do I get to the point where the black borders are there from the start, there when I add more photos instead of the special effects seemingly there by default.
I must have decided at some point that I preferred these special effects to the black borders but after changing my mind and going back to the black borders I now seem (unless someone knows how) stuck with the special effects upon adding more images initially. Now I have to physically remove the special effects each time. How do I get the black borders as default ?

  • Which special effects are you referring to?

As I mentioned, you can select all the slides using Control+A. However, you'll not be able to remove the black bars that Nero Video automatically adds to maintain the aspect ratio that you set in the Movie Options.

  • You should be able to open that .vob file in MediaInfo when you select File\Open. I'm not sure what it's going to tell us in regards to your issues.

    • Still can't see that MediaInfo you were talking about. When I click 'Open' (can't see 'File/Open') all that does is open Windows Media Player.
    • Garry,

Go to MediaInfoOnline - MediaInfo in your browser! in your browser. Open File Explorer to the VIDEO_TS folder and drag the .VOB file to the "drop zone" as shown in this YouTube video:

After copying the result to the clipboard, paste the clipboard into a post by using CTRL-V on the keyboard or by right-clicking and selecting Paste.

  • I don't know what "cute" means or what you're showing in your screenshot.

The auto detection never moved. I guess that's because it says 0 detected but that's in grey. I cancelled it.

I then burned the project to my hard drive successfully. Note I had checked the box in the Burn screen to enable forward and backward. Lo and behold, it added 98 chapters to each title, spaced equally. The funky thing is that it moved forward to each chapter but skipped some chapters while moving backward in Nero Media Home. Checked it in MediaInfo and the resolution was 720x.

Note that I had used TV Standard for that project.

Using the same project, I added 50 chapter markers to one of the titles. When I created a Titles only menu, the project was nearly 4 GB. When I used a Titles and Chapters menus, the size of the project went off the chart and I had to use Super Long Play and it reduced the resolution to 352x. The project was still too large at about 4.1 GB.

I changed to TV Widescreen and the Titles Only menu went off the chart. Once again needed to use Super Long Play to get it within 4 GB. I didn't bother trying it with Titles and Chapters menus.

So, depending on the settings, you could burn a 8000 slide DVD-Video with 98 chapters each and a Titles Only menu.

    • I haven't been following what you guys are doing so I don't know what black space have to do with anything and have no interest in pursuing it. Garry said he wondered why he was able to burn a 8000 slide show to DVD-5 in Nero 7 but can't do it now. All I did was demonstrate that you can. As I mentioned, I used v2015 but don't expect it to be any different in another version. You won't be able to get a chapter marker for every slide. Of course, my results were made using the same slide for every picture and the results would vary depending on the size of the slides. If you want a copy of the video_ts, I can give it to you.

  • I'm currently putting together a bunch of slide-shows and will be burning those slide-shows onto disc. I still can't seem to find how to stop the special effects loading in the first instance and so I have to remove the special effects in order to replace them with black borders/bars.
If you need screenshots of these projects please let me know.

    • No-one told me that MediaInfo is an Online thing. I was busy looking around my PC for 'MediaInfo' like an idiot. Watched your YouTube video on the subject but you don't say what to do after copying the file to Clipboard, whatever that is. Anyway, I copied the file to Clipboard but don't know where 'Clipboard' is nor do I know how to access Clipboard to find the file, so I used 'Download MediaInfo Report' instead and here are the results in two screenshot parts posted below. Please address my queerie on Clipboard as I'd like to know about that.
    • Garry,

First, let me apologize for calling you Barry sometimes. I'm old and these things happen!

The "Clipboard" is just a storage area used by Windows to save text, or files, etc. that are "Copied" by users using CTRL-C (or by other means). When the user uses CTRL-V (or selects Paste from a context menu, or ...) Windows inserts whatever is on the Clipboard into the user's document. See https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/c..., for example.

    • Garry,

I'm not sure what you mean by that, so I'll guess. Assuming you have both 4:3 and 16:9 photos (which appears to be the case), it would be normal for the 4:3 photos to fill the 4:3 frame and the 16:9 photos to fit the width of the frame and have horizontal black bars added to fill the vertical space; Similarly, in a 16:9 project (TV Widescreen), 16:9 photos fill the 16:9 frame, but 4:3 photos have vertical black bars added to fill the horizontal space.

If I've missed your point, please post a screenshot.

  • Garry,

I've done some testing using the Nero sample pictures duplicated 9 times (90 in all). I created a DVD at various quality settings in PAL mode and couldn't get a bitrate any where near that on your DVD. Then, I recoded the "High Quality" using the XMedia Recode program to reduce the bitrate by about a factor of ten.

    HighQuality
    File size : 160 MiB
    Duration : 7 min 30 s
    Overall bit rate : 2 981 kb/s

    StandardPlay
    File size : 160 MiB
    Duration : 7 min 30 s
    Overall bit rate : 2 989 kb/s

    Super Long Play
    File size : 110 MiB
    Duration : 7 min 30 s
    Overall bit rate : 2 052 kb/s

    XMedia Recode
    File size : 19.1 MiB
    Duration : 7 min 30 s
    Overall bit rate : 356 kb/s

I imported two of the Nero files and the XMedia Recode file into Nero Video, eliminated all but the first 10 pictures from each, exported the result and uploaded it to YouTube:

Also, I zipped up all 3 Nero files and the XMedia Recode file and put it on WeTransfer if you care to check them out:

  • This poxy program known as Nero is driving me crazy. I'm having to change every single 'Movie' (i.e. photo albums) from 16:9 to 4:3 (because 4:3 fills up more of the screen) but when I continue the following day from where I left off, everything has changed BACK to 16:9 despite having saved the project each time I change to ratio. Why does it revert back seemingly of it's own accord ?
AND the title of each volume/photo album also changes back to Movie1, Movie2 etc instead of the original title I gave it.

    • Garry,

I've been trying to change a project from 4:3 to 16:9 and back again without much luck. If I can find a reliable way to do it, I will post the steps!

I've also looked into the title naming issue. It appears that the names are not changed if the project is saved from the Content screen. If the project is saved from the Video Edit screen, the names revert to Movie1, etc. when the project is restored.

I have no experience with XBox, but if you intend to play your DVDs on a modern TV, I would think creating 16:9 DVDs would be appropriate. If your photos are 16:9, no problem; if they are 4:3, the vertical black bars will be there on the TV, but the TV will add them anyway if you send it a 4:3 DVD (unless it is set to stretch or zoom to fill the screen). For a mixture of 4:3 and 16:9 photos in the same project, a 16:9 project would at least display the 16:9 photos full screen; a 4x3 project would display the 16:9 photos in a 4:3 box with black bars above and below. Whatever!
    • Garry,

It appeared that switching from 4:3 to 16:9 worked if done on the Content screen as shown in this YouTube video:

However, it didn't work the second or subsequent times I tried. Furthermore, I have yet to be successful switch a 16:9 project to 4:3!

    • I've just done it. One is 4:3 the other is 16:9. Look again.
    • Garry,

I don't know what that means, but for me, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't (until now). I think I've found a way to reliably switch. It is demonstrated in the following YouTube video:

So, I have to change the project type on the Content screen and then go to the Video Edit screen to check that it actually worked. Sometimes I have to go to the Move Options and select the frame size button if it is not already selected, etc.

  • Garry,

You said above that your saved 16:9 projects are being restored as 4:3 projects (or 16:9 as 4:3). In any case, the issue I described in the video may be the reason and may provide a convenient workaround. If I change a 16:9 project to 4:3 at the Content screen and then proceed to the Preview screen, everything looks fine. If I save that and then restore it, it looks fine on the Content screen, but incorrect on the Video Edit screen. Here's a sequence of screenshots showing the problem and the workaround:

  • Thanks for that. Still bloody confusing though. I burned to disc one photo set at 4:3 and another disc burned with photo set at 16:9. I prefer 4:3. With 4:3 there is some black borders left-right and top-bottom but not too much whereas with 16:9 the black borders are much larger left and right although there is no black border at the top or bottom. It's a trade off I guess.
Now, if only there was a definitive answer to my original post.:)

  • Garry,

The MediaInfo data for your Nero 7 DVD shows a bitrate of 263 Kb/s. I think we have seen that any reasonable photo will not be encoded by the modern Nero at such a low bitrate using a "reasonable" quality setting. I've just finished an experiment to get a bitrate that low. I was able to achieve 245 Kb/s using custom settings:

Here's the basic MediaInfo for the resulting .VOB:

I used the reef Nero sample photo and the result was nothing to be proud of! In any case, I suggest that you try similar experiments to determine the lowest quality settings that give you acceptable viewing quality.

There's also the viewing screen size to take into account. The large screen TVs can make a standard DVD look slightly off!

We have also seen that the estimated space requirement is generally off by at least a factor of two. So, it would be best to ignore warnings that are within a factor of two and write to the hard drive. If the resulting folder is usable, it can be written to a disc using Nero Burning ROM, Nero Express, or by leaving Nero Video open and using "Burn Again" and changing the output device. If it's a bit big, it may be possible to shrink it using Nero Recode. (I may give that a go just to see how much it will lower the bitrate.)

I think the questions about skipping photos have all been answered: use 99 or less pictures per title and insert chapter markers for each picture.

    • Garry,

I've attempted to help you get around your problems with the modern versions of Nero Video. I've made one YouTube video after another; you haven't viewed them, have you?

The red line business keeps coming up. I've suggested that you ignore that line if the estimate is less than double the DVD's capacity and write to your hard drive. Then, I asked if you've noticed the error in the space estimates? The only feedback that I get is restatements of complaints and vague references to previous posts.

On the home page of this forum it says, "This is a user community. For Nero customer support please send an email including your serial number/proof of purchase to feedback@nero.com". Maybe you can get some help there.
    • Listen, the space issue is sorted. It's the 'skip' option I'm more concerned about. And chapter marking every photo doesn't work....to my satisfaction. So, I'm guessing (actually it's more than a guess) that there isn't a 'skip' option available.

  • Hey Garry-

I did some additional work on what you mentioned about v7. I don't have v7 but i do have v8 and the manuals for both versions. The things I did were all done using the SLP quality setting in v8.

I found that to be able to add chapters to slides, I had to add the slides to Make Movie (equivalent to Make Advanced Movie and Make Express Movie in your version). That requires selecting DVD, DVD-Video before opening. After adding the slides and clicking on next, there are four options for adding chapters- manual, automatic detection of chapters (which I think is only for titles), add chapter for each video (which I also thought was only for titles) and create chapters automatically. I don't think the last is available in v7. Anyhow-

I added 1965 slides (2000 is the limit for v8). I could add chapters manually. Running automatic detection only found 1 chapter. The option I think you were referring to in v7 is "add chapter for each video." Running that, added a chapter for each slide (that option would be greyed out in your version unless you had more than one title). The project was oversized but I burned it anyhow. There were only two vts....vob files and no chapters. I don't know why that option was able to add chapters.

I repeated that with a 500 slide project and the result was the same.

I tried another 500 slide project and used the "automatically create chapters" option. You won't be able to see the chapter markers in the Content screen and there should be no chapter menu. That too was over the size limit and, when I burned it, there were 83 chapter markers. However, in Nero MediaHome, I could skip forward to chapters but not backwards and it skipped every other chapter so there were essentially only 41 chapters.

I tried a 250 slide project with the same result.

I then tried a 250 slide project and added around 18 chapters manually. The resultant file played correctly.

Based on this, I don't know what you did in v7 to create a 8000 slide DVD-Video with an equivalent number of chapters on DVD-5 if you used the "add a chapter for each video" option.

I tried two 500 slide projects in v2015. One with "automatically create chapters" in the Content screen and the other with "enable forward and backward......" in the Burn screen (that's not in v7 and v8).

Both resulted in the same thing I found with the same 500 slide project in v8. I don't understand this business of skipping forward to every other chapter and not being able to backwards skip. In all cases, it would actually skip backwards one chapter for a fraction of a second and then return to where it was.

On the other hand, I still don't know why you think there's no skip option. As I mentioned, I sometimes had to run the automatic detection twice to get it to add all of them in a 99 slide title and adding a few manually isn't a big deal to me.

As mentioned by Omega Tester, you can always run it by tech support to see what they find.

Still waiting to create my 5000 slide project. Maybe next spring.

  • OK, as a last ditch attempt I added Chapter Markers to a project with 984 photos. With a 100% sensitivity rating and pics set at 4.5 seconds.
After the process was done 971 photos had chapter markers and if I had the time I would have had to trawl through all the images until I found the ones (13 of) without chapters and manually add chapters to those 13 images. After adding Chapter Markers the used space was fine until I went to the next screen/page.
I thought I was finally getting somewhere until I clicked 'Next' and went into the Menu Edit Screen. Now the used space has went from just over half a GB used to hopelessly in the red.
So, adding Chapter Markers to each individual photo is not how to do it.
