Nero Video 2015 "SmartEncoding" + "Fit to Disc" BUG

Nero Video 2015 SmartEncoding BUG

As someone else mentioned the other day, Nero Video 2015 with "SmartEncoding" turned on, as well as "Fit to Disc" has a BUG.

The reported size drops and does NOT fit to disc upon burning.
The "Quality" reports as "Excellent". This does NOT happen in Nero Video 12.

In Nero Video 12 ...

In Nero Video 2015 ...

I rarely use "SmartEncoding" ... and if this was simply a glitch in the blue bar estimation, I wouldn't be so concerned ... HOWEVER ... imagine my shock to see the resultant burned disc surface only taking up a small area of the disc, and the playback experiencing some freezing issues on playback in a standalone DVD player.

Anyone else with Nero Video 2015 experiencing this same bug?

  • SmartEncoding overrules Fit to Disc in my opinion. SmartEncoding preserves the original quality and needs less time to encode. So why should a file that is compatible with a certain disc format be blown up to fill the disc if this will take longer and won't improve the picture quality. I checked with Nero Video 12.5 and Nero Video 2015 (side by side screenshot) and in bot applications it works well in my opinion. What do you think?

  • Since5.5,

cil1 and Wither 1 mention this bug in topic Nero 15 Video DVD is pixelated/choppy.

collas mentions the bug in topic horizontal lines playing a dvd video with a dvd player (dvd burned with nero 2015).

In both cases, the imported file is a .mp4. Lucky Phil didn't mention the format of his imported file.

  • Hi Chaps,
My issue is that the disc exhibits playback issues when it is reduced to not spanning the entire disk.

  • Ah, OK. My understanding is now as follows: Burning specific videos Nero Video 2015 with SmartEncoding to a DVD-Video enabled will produce artifacts during playback. Burning the same videos with SmartEncoding disabled will produce DVD-Videos without the mentioned problems. Is this a proper summary? Please let me know. If so, could you please provide one sample file that produces the issue here? This would be great. Thx.
    • Not artifacts, the playback freezes. By pressing stop and then fast-forward to where it froze, the DVD will play for a while, then freeze again.

I have only ever had that problem with a DVD that was reduced in size to this weird 1.97 GB usage.

In every case where the disc utilized the full surface, there is never a freezing issue.

  • It really looks like this only happens with certain files. I just burned a DVD Video with SmarctEncoding and used a legal mp4 rip off an commercial title as source and had no problems. Maybe you can provide your source file? I can drop you an email if you don't want to share here, please let em know. Thx.

  • Since5.5,

In topic Nero 15 Video DVD is pixelated/choppy mentioned previously, I provided an ~800 MB .mp4 file that Wither 1 used to confirm, "With SmartEncoding in NV 2015 set at automatic, it shows it as 800 MB. When disabled, it shows the same as you show. In v14, it shows the same as you show regardless of whether or not SmartEncoding is enabled.".

So, it would seem that the problems Lucky Phil is describing are subsequent to the initial problem that the so-called "SmartEncoding" option results in strange behavior on Nero 2015.

Are you able to verify that the "blue line" length changes when the so-called "SmartEncoding" option is toggled?

If so, is it clear that the length should not change since the imported file is not DVD compatible?

    Yes

    Yes

So let's focus in this entry on the "blue line length" issue and any frezese/distortions that happen somethimes with some files when SmartEncoding is on. I will check internally about this.

  • Hi Video Doc,
I have downloaded the pre-release version and I am transcoding the video file that gave me freezing issues before - the one that reported 2.28 GB on the full-bar previously with Fit-to-Disc and SmartEncoding both selected.

The size being reported with this new version is now working properly ...

I'll report back tomorrow regarding how it performs in play-back on my stand-alone DVD player ...

Here is the screen capture of the size estimate now reporting the "correct" size :

    4.37 GB

  • The playback was fine - no issues, so the pre-release version has fixed the problem concerning the strange size and freezing during playback with certain video files when both SmartEncoding and Fit to Disc are selected together.

    Thanks Video Doc :)

  • I'm having a similar if not the same problem. I'm working with two files. One is about 2 hours but is 5.35gb. The other is an hour and a half but is 5.55gb. The first file is able to compress down to 4gb with SmartEncoding on while the second only compresses down if SmartEncoding is Automatic or Disabled. Why is this?? Further more both are .mpg files and I have the setting on Fit to Disc for both. What should I do to get the other file to compress properly?? Im adament about preserving the original quality so SmartEncoding on would likely be best. I'm using Nero 10.

  • I have fit to disc on, smart encoding off, and I still end up with a video_ts folder over 5Gb. This is ridiculous.
    • markstrong,

More info! As I understand it, the "fit to disc" option decreases the output size by lowering the encoding bitrate (quality), but won't go below "low" as indicated on the lower right of the Burn Options screen. If it indicates "low" quality, the output can be written to a hard drive folder and then compressed further using Nero Recode.

      Video Issues

In most cases, it is helpful to provide information on the problem source video. Probably the easiest way to provide detailed data on a video is to paste the data from the clipboard after following instructions in topic Use MediaInfo in Your Browser. Alternatively, uploading a video to one of the cloud services and pasting a link to the file enables others to download the file and try to replicate the issue.
It never hurts to also indicate:

      • The Nero application title and version.
      • The Windows version.
      • Graphics device
      • Project screenshots if applicable
      • Screenshots of error dialogs, if applicable
      • Output video parameters, such as format, resolution, quality, etc.
