Nero Video BD | Menu has low bitrate and looks bad

I try to create a Blu Ray disk with a menu.

After selecting my video files and adjusting setings like bitrate I have more than 1 GB left until reaching the red stripe on the capacity scale. I only use 3 menu pages without an intro.

My disk has a res of 1280x720. My menu background has the same resolution and its jpg file is looking sharp. After encoding my menu looks really bad and it ́s bitrate is only at ~300.

What do I have to do to make my menus look better?

  • Hi Nero97-

Sorry I didn't respond to your other thread but I was kind of baffled by why you are using a resolution which isn't really a good one to start with since it was never widely accepted and is well below the expected resolution on a blu-ray disc. I also didn't understand why you wanted to lower the bitrate just because you thought it was too much.

What is the resolution of your original files?

  • Hey, thanks for your response!

My content is 720p source and I don ́t want to upscale it. I would upscale my files if I can get an improvement in quality but I am not sure if this is possible without professional software (I can only use Nero Platinum 2017 and DaVinci Resolve). Also I would prefer to not downscale my files to fit on a DVD / SD on Blu Ray.

I want lower bitrates because my content is cartoon / anime which in general can deal better with lower bitrates without losing quality.

Furthermore I want to fit as many episodes as possible on one disk without quality loss.

  • Is it 1280x720p?

If it is, then burning it using the default settings (or the 1280x720p) shouldn't cause any quality issues. You can get a lot of material on a BD disc. When you try to exceed that limit, then you will start seeing quality issues.

  • Yes it is 1280x720p

I am testing some settings now. It seems like as long as Windows Media Player can play my m2ts files of my menu it will look good. But most of the time WMP can ́t play m2ts files or it gives me a black screen (episodes always play normal and are always as expected) which results in a bad looking menu when testing my iso file in a virtual drive. I don ́t really know what causes this issue.

Also smart encoding lets me use my OBS (a software with screen capture functions) recordings without reincoding so I can use lower bitrates like 8000 kBit/s for 1080p content and can fit more stuff on a disk. I don ́t know why I can ́t use smart encoding for my other files. Both are h.264 / MPEG-2.

(Edit: My recordings are encoded in NVENC h.264)

I will try to re-record my videos with OBS now to see how low I can go with bitrate so I can fit more stuff on the disk. It ́s not optimal but right now the only solution to my problems I can think of as long as I can ́t use smart encoding on my other files.

Do you know how to make my files ready for smart encoding? And do you know how I can make my menus look as intended more frequently? Like I said my menus most of the time look pretty bad and it always happens when I can ́t play these menu m2ts files with WMP.

For example: I created 2 test disks. On both I use 2 custom menus both Full HD. After encoding the first one my main menu is a 00:00:00 seconds m2ts file and looks horrible. My "choose episode" menu is a 00:00:24 seconds m2ts file that I can play on WMP without any problems and it looks as intended. So only one of two menu pages is right (both use the same background etc.).

On my second disk both menu pages are 00:00:25 seconds files and look as intended without any problems. Something has to cause this issues but I dont know what it can be.

  • How does one get a menu with a duration of zero seconds? The last two digits in the counter are usually frames not time.

For the material you have, I wouldn't use Full HD. I would use HDTV Basic HD. The resolution for this setting is the same as your starting material. Using a setting with a higher resolution isn't going to improve the quality of the output. In fact, it can cause artifacts.

Smart Encoding is set to run, as the default. All it does is speed up the encoding process by only encoding media when it's necessary for the settings you've selected.

To play your projects, I suggest using either the free VLC Player or the free Leawoo blu-ray player rather than messing with WMP. On the other hand, you can play your projects in the Preview screen after the Menu Editing screen. In addition, when burning for test purposes, select Write to Hard Drive Folder. Select a folder and burn. This will result in a BMDV folder that you can drag and drop into either of those players.

I don't know if it would help for me to look at the burn logs.
